Mainni grew up in a secluded Rakash village, where she and her brother were raised by their uncle after being orphaned. Having lost a foot in a hunting accident, their uncle knew how quickly the world could turn dangerous. His determination to protect Mainni left her with little opportunity to discover it for herself.
Kept indoors and closely sheltered, Mainni was never permitted to meet people of other races. Rakash was the only language she learned, and much of what lay beyond the village existed for her only in stories, warnings, and unanswered questions.
Necessity eventually opened the door that caution had kept shut. As her uncle became less able to travel, bringing supplies to the village grew increasingly difficult. Mainni left for the Crossing while still a very young woman, seeking instruction in the Moon Mage Guild. Her ambition was practical, if considerable: she would learn to open moongates so that her uncle and her village would no longer depend upon journeys he could not make.
The Crossing offered challenges no lesson had prepared her for. Surrounded by unfamiliar peoples and unable to understand their speech, Mainni had to begin learning about the wider world while finding her own place within it. She had arrived with a purpose, but little experience of choosing anything for herself.
Her most unusual companions came without introduction. While sitting beneath a tree one day, Mainni began to sing. A swarm of bees gathered around her head, moving through the air as though dancing to her song. When she left the tree, they followed.
They have remained with her ever since. Whether drawn by her voice, some quality of her magic, or a reason known only to bees, the little swarm has become a familiar part of Mainni’s presence. For a young woman raised with so little company, their arrival was an unexpected kindness: she had gone out into the world, sung a song, and found herself accompanied.
