I'm not sure I'm satisfied with the history I added here (which is why I didn't do any linking). It's long and not all of it seems immediately relevant to the city, but it's difficult to separate the city from the island. In any case, I'm open to someone trimming it down to make it feel more relevant. --Porlock 11:17, 29 December 2007 (CST)
