Extremely old, extremely capable Necromancers are capable of feats that dwarf most Philosophers and their students. Sapient Risen, armies of undead, etc.

The lore of the matter is that philosophic necromancy is trying to make a science out what was historically an intensely occult, intensely unique practice, and is not wholly up to the task in some areas.
