mended tome with badly scorched and tattered pages
Look: The scorched tome contains several pages of difficult equations, drawings of geometric shapes and patterns, and few notes that do a poor job of explaining the tome's purpose. Several of the pages are charred along their edges while others were clearly torn and crudely re-assembled.

FOCUS:
You focus your magical senses on a mended tome with badly scorched and tattered pages.
It clearly has magical properties, though you can't begin to untangle what they are.
While you can sense your own mana type within the matrix, you are also aware of a dangerously sorcerous mix of others.
You feel it may be possible to invoke the magics within, but doing so would be a blind leap and have unpredictable results.

INVOKE: Requires a weapon in one hand and the tome in the other. Causes cuts and bruises about both hands, sets you prone with a 10-second roundtime, consumes the tome, and places the weapon at your feet.
You focus your magical senses on a mended tome with badly scorched and tattered pages, seeking to release the energy it contains. You innately sense the Elemental mana that flows within, but something has tainted it! With no small amount of horror, the chaotic mixture of mana types within bursts forth, manifesting in tiny crackling arcs of uncontrolled Feral blasts!

As your senses are overwhelmed, you simultaneously experience a lurching sensation and a wave of dizziness as the uncontrolled energies latch onto your bastard sword and begin channeling into it. The scorched tome bursts into flame and disintegrates, the sword grows too hot to hold, and you drop it as you recoil from the explosive exchange!

You tumble back and down in a futile attempt to escape the chaos, though much too late. Your hands were burned, and your bastard sword seems very different.

Not all weapons are compatible with the tome (reason unsure):
You focus your magical senses on a mended tome with badly scorched and tattered pages, but something from an ironwood-hafted scorpion with silver-inlaid flames on the handle interferes and clouds your senses.

Current thinking is that applying the book's enchantment to a weapon allows it to dispel the Temporal Eddy buff that recent invaders have been employing to augment their combat capabilities.
Book-enchanted Weapon Messaging on Temporal Invaders:
You jab an icy-blue blade set with a glacier emerald in its crossguard at a Gorbesh Enchanter. A Gorbesh Enchanter badly fails to parry with a Gorbesh war-staff.
The blade flares violently, easily shredding its barrier into a blue mist and lands a light hit (1/23) to the Enchanter's chest.
