Mining has 3 (well technically 4, but the 4th is disabled) geological classifications - igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary (and alluvial). Each stone and metal spawns in one or more of these areas. These areas can be zone-wide or set per-room if the area designer so chooses.

About every half hour the area will perform a refresh. Any node that is very low on materials will respawn. There is also a small chance that non-depleted nodes will respawn. We've added exclusions over the years so rooms in the process of being mined don't respawn and mess with folks :P

There is a preference for an area to spawn the same stone and metal as it did last time.

Hmm, I think that about covers it!

A good strategy might be to completely mine out nodes for a half hour and then recheck them as they respawn.

Alternatively, revisit the mine every half hour and check for any nodes that may have re-popped.
