There's an intentional rift between morality and cosmology.

Cosmologically, sorcery is destructive. Fin. It can be as subtle or it can be blatant, but sorcery erodes at The Rules. This is the one thing about Sorcery that has remained stable and unretcon'd over the years.

Morally, you have to ask the question "So what?" Chopping trees down for charcoal is destructive too, but only the Rangers (and dragons...) really care about that. It's entirely possible for a character to have no moral compunction about breaking The Rules. Sorcery is scary and has the potential to go all sorts of bad places. But tell that to a Moon Mage that has angered Pelag and he might laugh a little.

Of course like any moral quandary there's a cliff at the end. Again I point out that the Philosophers believe they're doing nothing but breaking The Rules for the benefit of humanity. And there is The Hunger lurking in the darkness, the most extreme and ultimate cost of breaking The Rules too thoroughly.
