The WHERE verb · on 1/9/2011 5:01:42 AM 3260
Hey folks -

I've written out an interesting tool that some people will probably enjoy. The WHERE verb will basically let you better understand where you are in relation to major places and landmarks in the game, as well as letting you better understand what's in your immediate vicinity.

Here is the syntax for using it:

>where help
The WHERE verb lets you get a sense for where you are in Elanthia. You can use this to find out what areas of interest are around you, and also where you currently are in relation to major parts of the world.

You can use the following options with this command:

WHERE - Recall points of interest nearby.
WHERE [DIRECTION] - Recall what you know about points of interest to that direction.
WHERE CITIES - Recall where major cities are in relation to you.
WHERE LANDMARKS - Recall where major landmarks are in relation to you.
WHERE ALL - Recall both cities and landmarks are in relation to you.
WHERE [TOWN/CLAN] - Recall where you are in relation to that town or clan.
WHERE SUGGEST [SUGGESTION] - Suggest an interesting area or location that's nearby.

Everything displayed in WHERE and WHERE [DIRECTION] is player-suggested - As such, the list of things nearby will be entirely empty until we've had a chance to review suggestions. Don't worry about this! It will become more robust as time goes on.

A few answers:

What Are Some Suggestion Guidelines?
A great question. Suggestions should be in-game references, names, etc only. Please do not suggest 'Lippopod Hunting Ground' - Instead, you should suggest 'Laakvor' or 'Lake of Dreams'. The goal behind this verb is to provide access to the lore your character already likely knows, being a heroic adventurer.

So, You're Basically Making Us Do The Work For You?
In a sense, yes. I had to decide between spending hours and hours digging through every area of the game and coming up with the areas and landmarks that I think are interesting and important to you, or I could spend half an hour and write the ability for hundreds of people to have the opportunity to make suggestions. My main reason for choosing the latter is that I don't have those hours and hours to spend right now, and I wanted to be able to get this out to you guys in a faster fashion. Besides, there are historians and explorers out there with WAY more knowledge than I could acquire, and this gives them a chance to apply their dedication to something that'll be visible to everybody.

What Happens When I Make A Suggestion?
It'll go on a list that will get verified by a GM for accuracy. Once it's verified, it'll get added to the list of things visible when you use WHERE or WHERE [DIRECTION].

Can I Suggest A Major Landmark For WHERE LANDMARK?
You can, but please do it in the Places folders so it can be discussed by the people that watch those folders. There are some landmarks that didn't get included because they coincided with the same area as other landmarks, so I made a choice as to their importance.

My Suggestion Didn't Show Up - Did You Reject It?
Perhaps, or I might not have gone through and approved it. If I notice a trend of suggestions that don't fit what I'm looking for, I'll post about them.

Please let me know if you have any more questions!
