The Hero's Boast, written by Banner Targonian and first performed at "Zoluren Arts: A Concert Showcase, hosted by the White Gladiolus Society."

Intro

You say, "Every hero has a story."

You say, "And their stories? Absolutely true."

You say, "Every word, every deed - just ask the giants flattened, or the seas split with a single shout."

You wink.

You say, "So let's begin with a song of glory, of triumph, of the kind of deeds that echo forever."

You say, "A song that, of course, is entirely true."

You say, "Feel free to join in on this one. When you hear me sing, 'Raise it high,' join in with your own shout of 'High!'."

You ask, "After all, what's a bit of chaos at the opening of a concert?"

Banner chuckles and begins to strum a fast-paced melody.

You sing in a tenor voice:

    "I wrestled a giant with one bare hand,

     Laid him flat on the mountain land.

     The peaks all bowed when I gave a shout,

     And the sky stood still till the fire burned out."

You sing in a tenor voice:

    "Raise it high, the hero's song!

     Loud as thunder, bold and strong.

     But listen close, between the lines -

     The truth is buried where no light shines."

You sing in a tenor voice:

    "I dragged ten ships by a single sail,

     Pulled them home through the fiercest gale.

     The sea lay calm when I took command,

     And the waves knelt low at my bold demand."

You sing in a tenor voice:

    "Raise it high, the hero's song!

     Loud as thunder, bold and strong.

     But listen close, between the lines -

     The truth is buried where no light shines."

You sing in a tenor voice:

    "I snared three ravens high in the air,

     Bridled the storm with a strand of hair.

     I drank the sky and I stilled the rain,

     And I laughed as thunder forgot its name."

You sing in a tenor voice:

    "Raise it high, the hero's song!

     Loud as thunder, bold and strong.

     But listen close, between the lines -

     The truth is buried where no light shines."

You sing in a tenor voice:

    "But every boast is a coin I spend,

     A tale too tall that will break or bend.

     The louder the cheer, the more I fear -

     The shadow's truth is drawing near."

You sing in a tenor voice:

    "Raise it high, the hero's song!

     Loud as thunder, bold and strong.

     But if you seek the tale that's true -

     The shadow remembers what I can't undo."
