Pattern forged metal will be uncommon to rare in the new system. You'd essentially have to purchase permission to making a metal item of this type, which will be handled by the prestige system. This is will have IC justification, but in general just like we don't want everyone in the game fully decked out in kertig underwear, we want to keep the fanciful metalworking as something to be strived for.

Denser mixes have changed in the new system. Steel/Iron are still 5 density, and you can still cut them (a little) with lead or oravir to change density without disturbing the properties of the steel. It is impossible, however, to hit 3 density or 7 density (the caps) without rare metals. That is how it was always intended, but various mixing bugs (compression, pre-dusting) threw it all out of whack. Rare metals will be much more common with the new mining system, so I don't anticipate this being a problem.
