>>I've noticed in some places spells are referred to as forming a matrix and some others as forming a pattern. Targeting seems to be exclusively referred to as a matrix. Is there a difference between the two?

A pattern refers to a simple, static spell pattern.
A matrix refers to a spell pattern that can change properties based on some arbitrary condition.

There's no mechanical distinction between the two, it's merely an expression of Teh Lorez.
