Aldauth's Slab

[Kweld Gelvdael, Vulture's Gullet]
This strange circular crawlspace offers little room to maneuver around. The gullet yawns open into a larger cavern to the north, while carved steps in the stone floor to the west curve upward, further into the throat of this giant beast. A rough black basalt slab is leaned up against the wall flanking the steps, covered in strange glyphs of a forgotten language.
Obvious exits: north, up.

You trace your fingers over the archaic script etched into the surface of the slab, attempting to discern the meaning of the symbols.

After much careful study, the first verse of a prayer is revealed to your studious mind.

"From the Scorpion's goblet I sipped,
To slip beneath the wake of the Ebon Tide,
The pall of death wrapped about me as a cloak."

The rest of the prayer remains a mystery, only to be revealed through more application of your mind.

You trace your fingers over the archaic script etched into the surface of the slab, attempting to discern the meaning of the symbols.

You reap the rewards of your continued studies as the second verse of the symbolic prayer is revealed to you.

"I soared fluidly through the ether,
Upon the wretched wings of a buzzard,
To leave part of myself upon The Bridge."

You smile with satisfaction as you have grasped nearly half of the prayer, but plenty remains to continue your studies upon.

R>study slab
You trace your fingers over the archaic script etched into the surface of the slab, attempting to discern the meaning of the symbols.

Your spirit rises as you discover the meaning behind the third set of symbols, and deeply-seated memories creep up in the back of your mind.

"I escaped the Void with haste,
   My soul forever changed.
   The Gift of Life's Breath,
   Branded upon my spirit."

You realize that you are near the end of the basalt slab, but the last two sets of symbols look increasingly difficult.

R>study slab
You trace your fingers over the archaic script etched into the surface of the slab, attempting to discern the meaning of the symbols.

At last the symbols of the fourth stanza seem to make sense to your mind, and you cringe inwardly at the implications of such words.

"Now I repay some of what I have taken,
And give to You the same in kind.
Take now your price for my use of thy gifts.
For what little my mortal life will mean."

A single line remains for you to decipher.

R>study slab
You trace your fingers over the archaic script etched into the surface of the slab, attempting to discern the meaning of the symbols.

A faint nimbus of eerie black light exudes from the basalt slab as you discern the meaning of the final line.

"I offer myself unto thee, Lord Aldauth."

The nimbus of light leaps from the stone and surrounds you briefly, and you feel that you are ready to invoke the powerful words of prayer. Your grasp on the holy verse seems weak and finite, however.

R>

You are still rather wet, but drying off nicely.

You feel that you can learn nothing more from the slab.

The grotto opens into a quaint, yet cold living space to the north. The stone floor is smooth and polished, with not a speck of dust apparent to the naked eye. It seems strange, given the state of the swamp, that this cavern would be so well looked after.

The smooth stone of the cavern floor curves gently upward to create the western wall. A deep niche in the wall has been hollowed out and filled with fertile soil, creating a flourishing garden filled with various herbs and small plants. Off to the north, a dimly-lit tunnel winds into the floor, curving down into the depths of the grotto. You also see Shaman Sharalti, a large steel medicine chest and a carved black basalt font.
Obvious exits: northeast, east, southeast.

>ask shar about slab

Sharalti nods gravely, "The black basalt slab contains an ancient prayer to Aldauth, written in a powerful language long forgotten to any who now walk Elanthia. The Druids who inhabited this place before Lanival's time were said to be able to summon His audience with the symbols etched into it."

The fragrant aroma of fresh herbs wafts out of the niche garden.

In the niche garden you see some sufil sap, a rock, an ebon jackal's heart pearl, a patch of jadice blossoms, a patch of eghmok moss, a tiny bit of feathery chamomile, a large bush of sage, a small bee hive, a diminutive riolur tree, an ebon jackal's heart pearl and an ebon jackal's heart pearl.

Sharalti purrs quietly, drawing her robes about herself to shield from the cold.

You see Shaman Sharalti Ahkves, a Prydaen Cleric.
She has piercing black eyes and pale violet fur on her face and paws accented by an elegantly flowing mane the color of an ebon pearl.
She is young for a Prydaen. She is in good shape.

She is wearing a simple silver talisman etched with the jackal of Eylhaar, a plethora of slender blue-silver bracelets, and a gossamer silken cowl and robe so dark that they resemble the sky on Midwinter's Eve.

[Kweld Gelvdael, Vulture's Maw]
Grotesque depictions of horrific beasts are etched over the dark stone walls like cobwebs, each unique and intricate in its own right. The entrance to this dark grotto gapes open, carved by the hands of the ancients to pay homage to Aldauth's vulture. Beyond the edge of the massive beak structure you perch upon, the rancid swamp stretches out below. You also see a rough basalt vulture's tongue.

RK>pray aldauth
K>
You force yourself to ignore the sense of danger, resigning your fate to Aldauth himself as you lower your head once more in prayer.
RK>
You feel compelled to draw forth the prayer you deciphered from the basalt slab, and before you realize it, the words begin to fall from your lips.
RK>
Shadows swirl throughout the vulture's maw while the grinding sound of moving stone reverberates through your ears.

Your body ceases to respond to your will, allowing only the movement of your lips for the praise of Aldauth.
K>pray aldauth
You don't seem to be able to move to do that.
K>
The prayer begins to flow from your lips...

"From the Scorpion's goblet I sipped,
To slip beneath the wake of the Ebon Tide,
The pall of death wrapped about me as a cloak."

The stone around you grinds and scrapes, and you suddenly realize that the vulture's maw has begun to close!
K>
A dark pall washes through the area, the shadowy tendrils chilling your spirit as they writhe through the air.

"I soared fluidly through the ether,
Upon the wretched wings of a buzzard,
To leave part of myself upon The Bridge."

A harsh grinding noise surrounds you as the vulture's beak lowers above you.
K>
The prayer unravels from your mind, spilling from your lips with ease...

"I escaped the Void with haste,
   My soul forever changed.
   The Gift of Life's Breath,
   Branded upon my spirit."

A harsh grinding noise surrounds you as the vulture's beak lowers above you.
K>
You draw near the end of your prayer, your spirit strong and your mind brave.

"Now I repay some of what I have taken,
And give to You the same in kind.
Take now your price for my use of thy gifts.
For what little my mortal life will mean."

The top half of the vulture's jagged beak looms just barely above you, and you sense that this is the last moment to make any escape.
K>
You conclude your prayer...

"I offer myself unto thee, Lord Aldauth."

As the prayer closes, the massive serrated-stone beak you perch upon slams shut, crushing your body savagely.

* Cazvelu was just struck down!

The orb of swirling light flickers and dies, and you sense the magics of your Osrel Meraud spell depart.
Your death cry echoes in your brain as it quickly dawns on you that you have just died! Already, you feel the tug of eternity upon your spirit and you struggle to remain tied to this world.

You are somewhat comforted that you have gained favor with your God and are in no danger of walking the Starry Road, never to return.

Your body will decay beyond its ability to hold your soul in 62 minutes.

You feel yourself lifted gently, cradled as if by a mother's hand.

You suddenly find yourself floating upward, the light dimming slowly around you. Eventually, everything vanishes as the distance increases and you are enveloped by a sparkling panorama of brilliantly lit stars.

[The Starry Road]
You find yourself walking along a road like one you have never seen before. Spread out before you is a stream of light, paved with stars and bounded by every constellation and planet you had ever seen while a mortal, only now more vibrant and somehow alive.

You walk forward, putting one foot in front of the other, wandering closer to something which never seems nearer. Time, space and distance have no meaning in this place, leaving you feeling nothing but a strange peace tempered by a prickly feeling that your destiny is not yet finished.
After what seems an eternity, you reach a gate. Before you stands a stoney-faced being who gives you a hard look before saying, "Were it not for the love of Truffenyi, your soul would be lost to the Void. Do not squander his gift." With a swift movement of his hand you suddenly feel yourself pulled back to the land of the living.

A violent chill suddenly wracks your spirit, as if you had suddenly been wrenched into the depths of the most abyssal ocean. You relent to the cold and simply float under the inky ebon waters, allowing the current to do with you what it may.

As you ebb and flow along with the dark tide, you notice masses of swirling silver lights stir up all around you. They seem quite close, yet still far. The nebulous motion of the luminance mimics that of twinkling stars, yet you cannot be quite sure. Before you can ponder it much further, the lights begin to gradually grow brighter, until they roar with the brilliance of a thousand suns. You shut your eyes tightly, trying to shield yourself from the violent display but your flesh awakens with an intense burning sensation, jolted from its frigid slumber!

Suddenly you feel yourself being expelled from the tide, your lungs burning with excruciating pain as you vault into a new body of water. After a moment of floating in the frigid pool, you realize with joy that you are very much alive.

A severe, yet gentle feminine voice whispers, "You have been given another chance, my child. Arise anew within my spirit!"

A sense of serenity saturates the aquatic shrine, as if guarded by an otherworldly presence. The glassy black water is so frigid that it numbs your flesh immediately upon first contact, beckoning you to lie back and drift down into the deathly grasp of the jackal's spirit.

Jackal's Heart Pearl

[Kweld Gelvdael, Jackal's Belly]
A small niche yawns open in the eastern wall, its surface carved into the shape of a gaping jackal's maw. Great attention to detail has been paid to the stone carving. Despite its ancient appearance, it has been polished and taken care of with stringent devotion. You also see Shaman Sharalti. Obvious exits: southwest, west, northwest.
>ask sha about pearl
Sharalti's tail flickers back and forth in an amused fashion, "The ebon jackal's heart pearl is a strange mineral spawned within the bowels of the Zaulfung itself. It is unknown what their exact origin is, but they were held in great regard by the Druids who constructed this holy place as a way to show reverence and devotion to Eylhaar. They must first be cleansed properly in the divine flame of the jackal's maw." She pauses briefly, squinting an eye at you as if sizing you up. "I suppose if you think you would like to show your worth to Her, you would need to sift through the muck at the very bottom of the swamp. The sludge at the top does hold no riches. Getting down there, however, is another problem entirely."
>
Sharalti murmurs a quiet prayer, her eyes fixed upon the stone niche carved to resemble a jackal's open maw.

A bolt of cerulean light flickers within the niche.
>
Sharalti purrs quietly, drawing her robes about herself to shield from the cold.
>
You suddenly realize that Sharalti isn't standing where she was moments ago.
>l nich
You see nothing unusual.
>put pearl in nich
You carefully set an ebon jackal's heart pearl in a shallowly carved niche vaguely resembling a jackal's open maw. A pale nimbus of eerie blue light begins to stir within.
>
Flickers of pale blue flame emanate from within the carved niche.
>
Sharalti slinks out of hiding with fluid, catlike movements.
>l in nic
In the carved niche you see an ebon jackal's heart pearl.
>
The flame seems to grow darker, sending eerie waves of cerulean light washing outward from a shallowly carved niche vaguely resembling a jackal's open maw.
>
Billows of ghostly smoke rise from a shallowly carved niche vaguely resembling a jackal's open maw, snaking out of the area with eerie purpose.

The smoke collects overhead into the form of a sleeping jackal before obscuring once more, illuminated with a midnight-blue light as the fire continues to grow in the carved niche, surrounding an ebon jackal's heart pearl.
>
The flame darkens still, turning a deathly shade of ebon as it dances around an ebon jackal's heart pearl within the carved niche.

A sudden chill courses through your veins and you sense your spirit weaken. The pearl gleams brightly, and you sense that it is fully prepared to offer unto your deity.
>get pearl
With much trepidation, you reach out to pluck an ebon jackal's heart pearl from a shallowly carved niche vaguely resembling a jackal's open maw, despite the shroud of black flame that swirls over its lustrous surface. As your fingers meet the gemstone, it is surprisingly cool to the touch -- the flame sending a mere tingling sensation through your fingertips.
