Around 20th circle, you can get a horse and ride it. Horses (and their riders) can be trained in various skills.

Instructing

  • Horse techniques for the rider or the horse can be taught by the Stablemaster or a member of a certain guild.
  • Only one person or horse can be instructed at a time.
  • No normal class can be taught at the same time as instructing.
  • To see what you can teach type INSTRUCT (PERSON). If it tells you that you can't teach that person anything, then you know the subjects, but can't teach them.


Rider Skills

Basic Horsemanship

Everyone seems to be able to learn basic horsemanship from the Stablemaster. Even those people under the minimum for most skills which appears to be 20th circle.


Combat

  • Paladins can learn Combat by asking the Stablemaster about Combat after completing Basic Horsemanship
  • Paladins and Rangers can teach other characters about Combat (40th circle or higher)
  • Instructing a person in Combat takes about 80 minutes.


Joust

  • Paladins can learn Jousting by asking the Stablemaster about Joust after completing Basic Horsemanship
  • Paladins can teach other characters about Joust (probably 50th circle or higher)
  • Anyone can joust apparently, even without being tought Jousting knowledge and even if the horse is not Jousting trained. Probably better jousting with appropriate training.


Prep

  • Spell casters can ask Stablemaster about Prep if high enough skill/circle.


Targetted

  • Warrior Mages can teach other chacters about Targetted.
  • Teaching Targetted takes approximately 30 minutes.


War

  • Rangers can teach other characters about War.


Load

  • Barbarians can teach LOAD, which allows someone to load a weapon while on horseback.
  • Teaching Load takes approximately 20 minutes.

Bareback

  • Rangers can teach other characters how to ride bareback.


Horse Skills

  • Only Rangers can teach horses most skills, including the following: jump, beg, kneel, magic, saddle, spin, race (tolernace), war, lead, joust, combat
  • It takes approximately 6 hours to teach a single horse every possible skill.

Instructing a person in Combat takes about 80 minutes. Try to teach the rangers first folks for they can then teach horses Combat and War. (more on that later) I don't know how long it takes to Instruct Joust since I can't instruct it.

Warmage can teach Targetted. Not sure if this is useful or not, but I learned it in case all offensive magics fall into this. Takes about a half hour.

Barbarbians can teach Load...as in how to Load a missile weapon on Horseback. Takes about 20 minutes.

Rangers can teach how to ride Bareback. Takes about 10 minutes.

Now everything else in regard to Horses is what the Ranger can instruct it. This is where the big time factor comes into play....especially when you take into account that a ranger can only instruct one horse at a time. People can only instruct one person at a time as well, and you can not teach a normal class and instruct at the same time.

So far rangers can teach the following skills/tricks to Horses:jump, beg, kneel, magic, saddle, spin, race (tolernace), war, lead, joust, combat

It supposedly takes approximately 6 hours for a ranger to teach a horse everything that can be taught.

Saddle and Lead (rope) are not needed by our current horses. These will likely come into play with wild horses.

Beg makes it sit and beg. Kind of undignified but maybe it has a use.

Kneel is needed for the shorter races to mount a bigger horse. And be warned that if you want plate on your horse, you need a bigger animal. How big I don't know.

Spin is also rear. People have yet to figure out how this works, or if it works. But having your horse be able to spin would be invaluable in combat. And rearing just looks way cool. Heh

Race (tolerance) is ESSENTIAL for every horse. Prydaen and Rakash riders need it to just be in the same room as their animal without it freaking out. But if you are not one of these races, and don't have your horse taught this, then everytime a prydaen comes into the room there is a chance your horse will rear. Not good.

Combat teaches the horse not to freak out when it gets to melee range. Magic teaches it not to freak out when you cast a spell from its back. Joust should be self explanitory.

And War makes it into a Warhorse, so it will fight as you ride it. Which is something only our guild can do at this time.

Announcement regarding horses

Greetings! I've updated the Horse System with a number of new things.

1) Moved the spin trick to SIGNAL and gave you the bonus rear trick along with it. SIGNAL HORSE REAR & SIGNAL HORSE SPIN.

2) A new Ranger to horse instructable technique that allows the horse a new movement style. Prancing!

3) A new Bard to player instructable technique that allows a mounted player to get things from the ground while mounted.

4)A new Trader to player instructable technique that deals with advanced riding. This will allow you to ride more efficiently on long stretches of road.

Thanks to all the player support and suggestions in the last few months since the debut of the system! Keep it up and I hope to see you at Simucon 2002!
