At the time, it wasn't clear to me how the 'span' correlates with the GM unit of measure. But I dug the information up and it looks like they're not 1:1.

So it looks like ILLIENA has it. 1 span should apparently be taken to mean less than or equal to 1 span.

So the pants and the item you wanted to put into the pants are both less than one span, which returns as one span when measuring. Except the item you want to put in is larger than the container, except not by that much, so the rounding up to "one span" is causing it to look like it ought to fit, when it actually won't.

Sorry if that's a bit confusing. This means that when comparing pretty small items (like pants pockets and necklaces) you may have to just try it and see.
