Rules
____________________________________________________________________________ / /_\ | o | | | | NOTES ON THE TRANSFORMATION OF FAMILIAR SPIRITS | | | | All of you are (or should be) aware that familiars are aether elementals | | that are bound into the form of an animal by tradition and preference | | rather than any grand law. While the form elementals take can have | | incredible range, there are practical limits to what I can accomplish with| | the time, tools and patience I have at my disposal. | | | | #1 I cannot change the basic nature of the talisman. A bear talisman | | after I am done working with it will, no matter what, still recognizably | | bind the familiar spirit into the form of a bear. | | | | #2 Familiars cannot casually produce cosmetic magical effects. Your | | familiar cannot make the area around it colder, or make its eyes glow at | | will, and it likes being set on fire about as much as you do. You will | | sometimes see this sort of thing out of higher-order elementals, but the | | aether elementals that respond to your dinky summonings don't have that | | kind of power in them. | | | | #3 Familiars cannot casually produce inanimate objects. I cannot include | | clothes or other ornamentation as part of its intrinsic appearance. If | | you want to play dress up with your familiar, do it in the privacy of your| | own sanctum. | | | | #4 Familiars do not have blood or guts. Any interior portion of the form | | that the spirit does not explicitly shape remains a solid, | | undifferentiated mass. | | And you are sick for thinking what you were thinking. | | | | #5 Familiars refuse to be bound into forms that resemble the undead. | | That also makes you sick for asking. | | | | #6 Familiars refuse to be bound into forms that have anthropomorphic | | features. The idea of looking like a Human is degrading to them. | | | | #7 Familiars may refuse to be bound to any form that they consider | | degrading or in bad taste. If I tell you your familiar will not accept a | | form, I will brook no argument about it. I am aware you can make the poor| | thing parrot out anything you want and I am not impressed. | | | | | | Beyond that, a familiar can be bound into any natural and many unnatural | | expressions of the animal world. For example, a bear talisman can be | | modified to produce any sort of bear you can conceive of, but also such | | things as bizarre proportions, unnatural coloration, unusual size, unholy | | designs picked out in contrasting colors across its faux-fur, whatever. | | | | Familiars by and large do not mind natural forms and you can consider | | these *safe* choices, but rule #7 applies in full force when you start | | asking how many horns can fit on a gerbil. | _|_________________________________________________________________________ | / /_\ | | | | \ \ / \_________________________________________________________________________\__/ |
