Ayrell says, "Good evening, everyone.  It is an honor to have been invited by The Grey Dragons to speak as a part of the Lunch and Learn Lecture Series - and it is an honor to have this opportunity to speak with you all again about history and dragons.  Though my lecture this evening will focus on one dragon, in particular.  That being... the World Dragon."

>

Raising her ice wine to Ayrell, Leayne gives her a toast.

>

Ayrell says, "Many of you have likely heard the story of how the moon Grazhir was shattered upon the World Dragon's hatching from within.  How the World Dragon came to be inside Grazhir is a matter of debate, though the most prominent theory is that it was placed within the moon by the Immortal Huldah."

>

Ayrell says, "For the sake of providing as much information as possible within our brief time together, I will touch only on a few details regarding that tale.  The story goes that Kertigen was commissioned by Phelim to craft four moons,  Blue Xibar, red Yavash, golden Katamba, and gold-kissed ivory Grazhir."

>

Ayrell says, "According to the writing known as A Trickster's Tale, Huldah came to Kertigen in his forge where Grazhir remained cooling on the anvil from its final tempering.  At the sight of it, Huldah approached, running his hands over the surface, lingering there with a loving touch.  Gazing down at the pale moon, he whispered "So beautiful you are now, but wait until they see the wonderful surprise you now hold within."

>

Ayrell says, "The story goes on to state that years passed slowly after that day as Huldah suffered his frustration and rage over the way he was treated by the other Immortals, blamed for things he didn't do, simply because his humor was misunderstood.  It is said that the faintest hint of shadow in Grazhir's heart gradually began to darken and spread, describing the "surprise" Huldah placed within the moon as a wondrous gift to the lands - the first dragon, intended to be gentle and wise.  However, as the beast grew, it fed upon its father's pain and anguished dreams thus twisting the dragon with hate.  A reflection of Huldah's inner torment."

>

Ayrell says, "As a random aside, I do feel it important to point out a slight discrepancy in the coloration of Grazhir between A Trickster's Tale and most other books of lore one might read on the subject.  In the Tale, it describes Grazhir as gold-kissed ivory while other sources describe the moon as pearlescent, silvery-white.  Whether or not this is an inaccuracy or simply a difference in how the colors were perceived from one person to the next, I cannot say for sure, though it seemed necessary to note, for those who are more familiar with one description or another."

>

You grin at Ayrell.

>

Lupdels ponders.

>

Illiya gazes thoughtfully at Ayrell.

>

Ayrell says, "The dragon itself has been described as a terrible, yet beautiful, sight to behold.  Its scales are said to have glittered like black metal, its claws thick and razor sharp, with a maw as wide as some mountain ranges while its tail stretched from horizon to horizon.  Viewed in the history books as all but indestructible, its eyes are depicted in artwork as glowing pools of red, the pupils slit horizontal, and its leathery wings so long and large as to blot out the very sun."

>

Leayne frowns.

>

Ayrell says, "As if the dragon's appearance were not frightening enough, it is said that the creature was drawn to the life-fires of Elanthia, or as some may refer to them, the inner fires of the planet's core.  The World Dragon sustained itself by consuming the very essence that kept this world alive, to which Truffenyi pointed out to the other Immortals that, if allowed to continue as it was, the Dragon would kill the planet, after which it would most likely move on to the sun."

>

Sarcio ponders.

>

Ayrell says, "It was for this reason that the Immortals decided it necessary to wage war with the Dragon."

>

Ayrell says, "Little is known as to the details of this battle.  Many stories tell of it occurring and the damage incurred in the crossfire.  For example, the golden surface of the moon Katamba is said to have been burned to its blackened state as a result of this battle, scorched by the dragon's breath, and leaving it in the darkened, soot-covered state in which our observations reveal it to be now."

>

Ayrell says, "Still the Immortals were unable to obtain victory.  The World Dragon was so strong, the Immortals failed in every attempt to wound it, let alone kill it.  This left the Immortals with no other choice than to accept that defeating the dragon was out of the question - leading them to the realization that subduing it was their last, and only, hope."

>

Ayrell says, "In one last final effort, the Immortals fought with all the valiance they could muster, weakening the World Dragon enough that Phelim was able to ambush the dragon, using his magical sands - at Peri'el's suggestion - to put the dragon to sleep.  With so much of the planet's inner fire consumed, it was then decided to place the World Dragon in the center of Elanthia as a sort of replacement for what was lost, thereby providing a new source of energy to sustain the lands."

>

Ayrell says, "As a protection, to avoid the dragon waking again and enacting its destruction upon the world, Peri'el, the goddess of the inner earth, descended to keep watch over the beast.  It is said that this is where she remains, to this day.  Lulling the dragon with her singing to maintain the depths of its slumber through the magic of her song."

>

Ayrell says, "It is from here that I will start to branch out into other areas of history that are linked to the World Dragon and exist because of it.  The first being the formation of the Ru'atin Peri'el."

>

Dytt raises an eyebrow.

>

Ayrell says, "History attributes the creation of the Ru'atin Peri'el to the first Reshalian King, Sarkhhl Smoneh, after the High Priest of Hav'roth advised him that the earthquakes plaguing Reshalia at the time were caused by the World Dragon.  The priest informed Sarkhhl that Peri'el was weakening after thousands of years served in keeping the dragon captive.  Returning to his order to confer over a means of halting the quakes, it was the High Priestess Maligen who suggested that mortals could potentially be of some assistance."

>

Ayrell says, "To set this plan into motion, Maligen commanded the clerics to seek out other female S'Kra Mur of both priestly and bardic persuasions known to venerate Peri'el.  Once gathered, Maligen resigned from her position as High Priestess of Peri'el, taking on the mantle of First Singer - or Ur'Kapo, translating to "First Song."

>

Ayrell says, "The purpose of the Ru'atin Peri'el was singular.  They were to strengthen and aid the goddess Peri'el in her efforts to keep the World Dragon asleep by using their divine inner strength and powerful voices to sing the songs of the goddess and enhance as well as supplement her powers.  It was to Reshalia island that Maligen and the first of the Ru'atin Peri'ell traveled to form the first Great Sanctuary."

>

Ayrell says, "This, however, leads us to the next area of history which holds a direct link to the World Dragon.  A subject with whom a great many - if not all - of you are likely familiar:  The Dragon Priests."

>

Ayrell says, "I use the Ru'atin Peri'el as the segue for this as it was the infamous leader of the Dragon Priests, Dzree, who sought to eradicate the Ru'atin Peri'el.  Dzree, herself, had attempted in her youth to join the Sisters, yet failed her entry exam to become one of the singers.  As a result of Dzree's persecution, only one enclave of the Ru'atin Peri'el remains to this day, located in Aesry Surlaenis'a."

>

Ayrell says, "On the subject of the Dragon Priests, their link to the World Dragon is that the Dragon Priest religion is based entirely upon the existence of the Dragon.  It is, however, important to note that dragon worship existed long before the Dragon Priests - and the Dragon Priests were not always associated with the negative tilt the mention of their kind elicits in the present day."

>

Ayrell says, "The peaceful days of the Dragon Priests are attributed to the one known to history as the first Dragon Priest, Sh'kial.  Initially, Sh'kial began his teachings in the Wyvern Mountains of Ilithi, preaching a theory that, through worship and devotion, the World Dragon could be appeased, ceasing its rumblings, and bringing with it a golden age of peace.  Under Sh'kial's leadership, the Dragon Priests offered existential sacrifices to the World Dragon in the form of goat flesh, roses, pearls, and other valuables.  It wasn't until some time later that this began to change."

>

Ayrell says, "This allows us to circle back to Dzree, who found a new religious purpose by joining the Dragon Priests as a protege of Sh'kial after failing to gain acceptance with the Ru'atin Peri'el.  Although Sh'kial's beliefs were considered fanatical, they were not evil, but Dzree deviated from Sh'kial's teachings, thereby leading the Dragon Priests toward their darker turn."

>

Ayrell says, "For, you see, Dzree did not desire the peace Sh'kial preached.  Her desire was for a different sacrifice to the World Dragon, in the form of humans and elves - and even an occasional S'Kra Mur.  When Sh'kial learned of this, he ordered his followers to cease their actions immediately.  In retaliation, Dzree declared Sh'kial a heretic and arranged his assassination, sparking the decline of Sh'kial's teachings and beginning a new sect of Dragon Priests who subscribed to the darkness of Dzree's way."

>

Ayrell says, "It did not take long for Dzree to declare herself the High Priestess of the Dragon Priests and building her following into a small army that began attacking villages in the mountains of Ilithi.  Dzree spent six years growing her sect into what we know now as the Dragon Priest Empire, sending missionaries to Qi'Reshalia to recruit more S'Kra Mur into their ranks."

>

You raise an eyebrow in Ayrell's direction.

>

Ayrell says, "As a result of Dzree's history with the Ru'atin Peri'el, Dzree harbored a significant anger and hatred toward the bards after her rejection.  Because of this, she used this war, and the fact that the bards stood in opposition of her, as an opportunity to obtain her revenge, making them the prime targets for sacrifices to the World Dragon.  Their guild houses were destroyed beyond repair and their teachings lost to the destruction, save for what was retained by those bards who survived in hiding.  But, as the story of the Dragon Priests and the bards could fill an entire lecture in and of itself, I will not deviate too far into that for now, so as to keep this lecture focused on the topic and story at hand."

>

Zersha grins at Ayrell, her dimples flashing into view.

>

Ayrell says, "Once the Dragon Priests defeated the Hounds of Rutilor, they quickly moved on to take Riverhaven.  House Theren is said to have held the Dragon Priests off for three years before they were forced to flee, at which time the Dragon Priests held areas of Ilithi, Zoluren, and Therengia hostage for five years.  After the Dragon Priests seized Qi'Reshalia, they worked for eleven more years to extend their control over most of the Elanthia we know for another hundred and sixty years."

>

>

Ayrell says, "The death of Dzree, however, is another subject which could fill an entire lecture, therefore, I will not spend much time on the details beyond stating that she made a very powerful enemy after turning her sights on Leth Deriel.  Weakened and frail in her advancing age at this point, she was visited by a raven that landed at her feet, after which it transformed into the figure of a woman standing approximately five feet in height, with hair the color of silver, long in length, and eyes the same amber as that of the black bird."

>

Illiya gazes thoughtfully at Ayrell.

>

Ayrell says, "The woman bowed to Dzree, introducing herself as Sithsia, Mage of the Forest, and declaring Leth Deriel to be under her protection.  Dzree called for her guards, to which Sithsia merely laughed, turning the charging guards to ash without even a sword or shield to mark their previous existence.  What she said next, I shall repeat as a quote from Neithrel Silverfrost's own writings.  "I prophesy this, fool priest.  In a year's time, a warrior shall come who shall smite you where you stand and destroy you and your empire.  All you have done will be as your former guards there - ashes to the wind.  This I promise, and this I say to be.  I, the mage, Sithsia."

>

Ayrell says, "This prophecy sent Dzree into a spiral of even greater madness than that which she already suffered.  Paranoia and fear led her to slaughter anyone she suspected to be the killer Sithsia described, her sermons becoming more twisted, speaking not of a golden age of peace, but of a time of terrible war in which the World Dragon awoke and consumed all of Elanthia.  But it was one year to the day of Sithsia's prophecy that Dzree met her end when she attacked a guard who arrived at her door.  In the wake of the exertion, her old heart could no longer bear the strain, giving out to leave Dzree collapsed over the corpse of her guard as a result of a self-fulfilling prophecy."

>

Ayrell says, "Although the story of the Dragon Priests does not end here, I regret to say that we are out of time for further details on the subject this evening.  My hope is that we have covered enough, however, to provide a solid foundation of knowledge regarding the World Dragon, it's creation, it's assault on Elanthia, it's "defeat" at the hands of the Immortals, and some of the history of our world that has transpired in light of the Dragon's history."

Jaelia beams at Ayrell!

Ayrell says, "Though there are said to have been other dragons long before that."

Vaerek nods to Ayrell.

Illiya asks Ayrell, "Golameth asked about book recommendations to learn more?"

>

Ayrell says to Golameth, "There are a few good books out there, though it depends on which aspect of the World Dragon you are interested in."

Lupdels says, "You mention tales involving Huldah and the World Dragon, I've also heard that Dergati may have also been involved but I'm less clear on how."

Ayrell smiles at Lupdels.

>

Illiya asks Navesi, "Did you have a question too?"

Navesi asks, "You mention that Huldah created the World Dragon. Do you have any idea how? Especially a being that ultimately ended up being so much more powerful than even the Immortals?"

>

Navesi nods to Illiya.

>

Ayrell says to Zersha, "All the writings I have read describe it as an actual dragon, whereas the Heralds are more said to have simply taken on the form of dragons."

>

Zersha nods to Ayrell.

>

Zersha smiles at Ayrell, revealing the dimples in her cheeks.

>

Ayrell smiles at Zersha.

>

Ayrell says to Navesi, "Sadly, the stories do not go into detail on how Huldah created the dragon beyond touching the moon."

>

Navesi nods to Ayrell.

>

Nilme says to Ayrell, "Fascinating lecture, as always."

>

Navesi says to Ayrell, "I was just wondering if you had any speculations."

>

Ayrell says to Navesi, "I think, in the spirit of magic, the belief is that Huldah mostly willed it into existence within the moon."

>

Navesi gives a slight nod.

>

Ayrell says to Navesi, "With an original intent of it being something good, and not the creature it turned into through its link with him and the strength of his emotions."

>

Ayrell says to Navesi, "Without any proof to say one way or another, I would wager a guess that the connection shattered when the Dragon freed itself from Grazhir."

Illiya says, "For those of you unfamiliar with us, the Grey Dragons are a fellowship dedicated to a life of upholding the Balance. We believe in living in harmony with the earth, much like dragons themselves."

>

Illiya says, "But our connection goes deeper than that. I'll let Waydren go into more detail about the ties between the Grey Dragons' purpose and philosophy and how it connects to dragons."

>

Illiya nods to you.

>

You smile at Illiya.

>

You nod.

>

You say, "Like Life and Elemental Dragons, much of the Grey Dragons has existed simply as myth or second hand information. Rumors and half truths caught and shared like fleeting scents on the wind."

>

You say, "Much of that is our own doing. We have not been much for words about who we are, what we do, and why we do it. Others have told our stories for us, to mixed success and varied motives."

>

You say, "Much as the Dragons opened up and told their story to Aaron Albaum, we too desire to separate fact from fiction. Actions and reasons from myth and conjecture."

>

You say, "Tonight is not the night for that."

>

You smile.

>

You say, "Tonight you will hear from one of the Realms' finest."

>

You nod to Ayrell.

>

Ayrell blushes, the tips of her ears turning a delicate scarlet hue.

Ayrell smiles at you.

>

Illiya nods at you, obviously agreeing with your views.

>

Jaelia beams at Elizzibiana!

>

You say, "However, shortly after the last of these Lunch and Learns in the series, the Grey Dragons will host an evening where we will do our best to answer each and every question laid at our feet."

>

Jaelia looks at you and lets out a hearty cheer on your behalf!

>

Crobin nods to you.

>

Zersha grins at you, her dimples flashing into view.

>

You say, "Anything and everything will be fair game, and we welcome the trail that you begin to track with us."

>

You say, "In there interest of time tonight, though...Illiya, I return the floor to you."

>

You bow to Illiya.

>

Raising her ice wine to you, Illiya gives you a toast.  Cheers!

>

Illiya says, "Thank you, Waydren! Now, some of you may recall our previous Dragon Research Symposium, where we dove headfirst into some complex dragon lore. Based on your valuable feedback, we realized we might have gotten a little ahead of ourselves."

>

Illiya says, "This time around, we've taken a step back to offer a bit more foundational knowledge before soaring into the advanced stuff."

>

Illiya says, "This "Dragons 101" series will serve as a solid base of understanding for your draconic knowledge, covering the essentials about dragons of lore and today. Think of it as a treasure map     a guide to unlock the secrets and lore of these mythical beasts."

>

Illiya says, "Over the next few sessions, we'll be exploring the World Dragon and its surrounding history, the God of Dragons, Life and Elemental Dragons, and Heralds and notable heraldic events."

>

Illiya exclaims, "So, grab your lunch, settle in, and get ready to embark on a journey into the world of these magnificent creatures!"

>

Illiya exclaims, "For our first session, it is with immense honor that I introduce our esteemed guest tonight, an Ilithian legend who truly needs no further introduction - Ayrell Evyntine!"

>

You let out a hearty cheer for Ayrell!

Ayrell blushes, the tips of her ears turning a delicate scarlet hue.

>

Illiya says, "Ayrell served with distinction as Lieutenant of the Mountain Guard during the Outcast War, and later as the first Emissary to the Mountain on the Ilithi Court."

>

Illiya says, "In more recent years she founded the Mountain Guard, the vibrant Crystal City Players, and the illustrious Ilithi Socialites."

>

Illiya says, "A scholar at heart, Ayrell's interest in history was the driving force behind her 'History on the Rooftop' lecture series, as well as her fascination with dragons. Today she will be telling the story of the World Dragon and the Dragon Priests."

>

Illiya exclaims, "So, please join me in giving a warm welcome to Ayrell!"

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

Ayrell says, "With that, I would like to once again thank the Grey Dragons for their kind invitation for me to speak, and offer an extension of my gratitude to all of you for listening."

>

Ayrell smiles graciously.

Illiya says, "Thank you Ayrell! Wow, I didn't realize the leader of the Dragon Priests was just a slighted and unsuccessful singer."

>

Jaelia hugs Ezerak, getting a smile in return.

>

Jaelia nods.

>

Jaelia applauds.

>

Ezerak fondly says to Ayrell, "I do so enjoy your lectures."

>

Tirost says to Ayrell, "I learned a lot. Thank you, My Lady."

>

Leayne softly says, "That was a lot to take in."

>

Navesi looks at Ayrell and applauds!

>

Illiya asks, "Since we have a bit more time before Ayrell has to leave, do we have any questions for her?"

>

Crobin nods to Leayne.

>

You say to Ayrell, "Your words of wisdom are always welcome at our fires."

>

Valynn nods at Leayne, obviously agreeing with her views.

Lupdels chuckles at Illiya.

>

Ayrell smiles at Zersha.

>

Ayrell says to you, "It is truly an honor to be here."

>

Illiya asks, "Any questions for our speaker?"

>

You ask Ayrell, "If you were to disabuse us of one single myth about the World Dragon, what would it be?"

>

Ayrell says to you, "That is difficult to say, as there is so much about the World Dragon that remains unknown to any certain degree."

>

You grin at Ayrell.

>

Golameth asks Ayrell, "Do you have any book recommendations if one wants to read more on the topic?"

>

Vaerek asks Ayrell, "I thought the World Dragon was here before Grazhir?"

>

Ayrell says to you, "Then there are the speculations about what truly happened with the war between the Dragon and the Immortals."

>

Lupdels raises his hand.

>

Ayrell says to Vaerek, "The most prominent stories indicate the World Dragon to have been placed inside Grazhir."

>

>

>

>

>

>

Golameth nods to Ayrell.

>

Golameth says, "I'll poke through the shelves then."

>

Navesi raises her hand.

>

Illiya nods to Navesi.

>

Ayrell says to Lupdels, "I chose the story of Huldah, as it is the most well known, through the writings of Gwyneira Greenmantle."

>

Leayne softly says, "I do love research."

>

Illiya grins at Leayne, her dimples flashing into view.

>

Ayrell says to Lupdels, "But there are certainly other theories out there as well."

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>

>
