Log of Mountain Guard meeting prior to departing for routine patrol

Year of the Crystal Snow Hare, 447 years since the Victory of Lanival the Redeemer. It is the 34th day in the 1st month of Akroeg, the Ram. It is currently winter. (10/21/2023)

From the view of Ayrell Evyntine.

Initial Greeting

[Milene's Rose, Tavern]
Roomy and rectangular, the tavern for Milene's Rose is always busy, but strangely never so full that it becomes unbearably crowded. A booth in the corner allows for privacy, and a bar offers service for the thirsty and the hungry. There is little sign of disarray anywhere. You also see the publican.
Also here: Treasure Seeker Fariden, Field Medic Darkewolff, Champion Seydin who is shining with a dark golden glow, Emerald Knight Akolu, Macabre Shuya, Black Fox Jaelia who is emanating a benevolent holy aura and Truthseeker Elurora whose figure is gracefully highlighted in a soft aurora of silvery-violet light.
Obvious exits: east.

You say, "For those who have only just arrived, I have requested that everyone postpone starting their pre-patrol preparations just yet. There are a few matters we will be discussing first before we head out."

Belzor says to Ezerak, "Milord, good to see you again."

Tirost nods to Briaen.

Meeting Intro

You say, "I am unsure if anyone else is planning to attend, so I will go ahead and begin. If anyone comes in late, we will simply have to catch them up."

Tirost asks Miskton, "I'm sorry to have missed the last visions meeting. Have there been any concerning the Nascent Unknown?"

Akolu takes a sip of his mead.

Elurora smiles at you.

Darkewolff says to you, "Make them sing while on patrol."

Jaelia nods to Darkewolff.

You say, "For the first part of this meeting, I would ask that everyone refrain from casting spells just yet. What I am planning to say is very important and I want to make sure that everyone is able to hear."

Elurora nods to you.

Jaelia nods at you, obviously agreeing with your views.

Shuya nods to you.

Belzor nods to you.

You say, "I would also ask that, if anyone has any questions about any of the myriad of subjects I am about to discuss, please do hold them for after I have finished. I will open the floor at that time for any discussion that may be needed."

Jaelia nods.

You say, "As many of you are aware, our last patrol saw us pitted against an army of flayed snowbeasts that found their way to the road just outside the city's eastern gates. After the dust cleared, I was approached by several people with... several questions... and I came to realize that we never really had an opportunity to address some matters that are pivotal to our training as a defensive group, therefore, I wanted to take a moment to address a few important training points this evening."

Belzor nods to you.

Elurora gazes at you.

You ask, "To begin, I would like to ask for a show of hands from those present - how many of you saw the devastation as a front line fighter during the Lyras war?"

Darkewolff gazes at you.

Jaelia raises her hand.

Belzor raises his hand.

Darkewolff raises his hand.

You nod.

You ask, "How many of you served in one of the militaries during the Outcast War?"

Belzor raises his hand.

Darkewolff raises his hand.

You nod.

You ask, "And, last but not least, how many of you fought in any of the numerous wars our world saw prior to the Outcast War?"

Darkewolff raises his hand.

Belzor raises his hand.

Elurora gazes thoughtfully at Darkewolff.

You nod.

Darkewolff nods to Elurora.

Akolu raises his hand.

Pyppa raises her hand.

Kintryn smiles at Tirost.

You say, "So, it appears there are a great many of those in attendance this evening who perhaps are not as familiar with how the battles were fought during the days of these wars. Back before we had the luxury of empaths with skill in combat that allowed them to join us on the field against the enemy."

Kintryn grins at you.

You say, "After watching how things transpired against the flayed snowbeasts, I realized there are some aspects of these 'old days,' as some would call them, that many of our current fighters and allies may not be quite as familiar with. The largest of which being - the importance of non-combat roles during battle."

Darkewolff nods to Elurora.

Xionara blinks at Fariden.

Non-Combat Roles during an Invasion

Triage Empaths & Clerics

You say, "Non-combat roles involve those who are not as comfortable on the front-lines. Which, I want to stress, there is no shame in. Some people are comfortable with being in the thick of fighting and others... are not. Additionally, some people simply do not have the experience just yet to -be- comfortable on the front lines and that is completely fine. In fact - it is normal. We all have to start somewhere. And if that somewhere is a non-combat role while we adjust and acclimate ourselves, then that is, honestly, a very important place to begin."

You say, "Non-combat roles come in a few forms, not the least of which being that of our triage empaths and clerics. Not all empaths and clerics are comfortable in battle and, quite frankly, sometimes it is beneficial to -not- have them all with us in the field. For a few reasons. By having a handful of empaths and clerics out of the battle and tucked away in the triage location, it gives our fighters a place to go for healing when our field empaths become overwhelmed. Or a place for the fallen to be taken for assistance so they can be healed and restored to life - and able to rejoin us on the front lines when able."

Belzor nods at you, obviously agreeing with your views.

You say, "I understand that being in the triage location is not quite as exciting as being in the field, but - that does not make it any less important. In the past, the triage location was one of the most exciting places to be. Helping the fallen, getting them patched up and back on their feet so they could rejoin their fellow warriors and keep our defense going like a well-oiled machine. Falling in battle is completely normal - and wholly expected, in many cases. The important part is having a plan in place to help the fallen so our numbers are only lessened for a moment rather than for the entire duration of the fight."

Jaelia nods.

Xionara's ears stand up proudly for a moment.

Pyppa ponders.

Darkewolff nods.

Combat Draggers

You say, "Another important non-combat role is that of those who take on the challenge of helping drag the fallen from the field so that they can receive the assistance they need. Yes, I understand that this feels less glorious and heroic than being one of the fighters but, truthfully, this is one of the most important roles a person can have. Because, not only are our draggers the ones who help the fallen receive aid and return to battle, but they can also help those who have not fallen yet, but who are in need of assistance, and are struggling to find their way out of battle. A simple tug on their arm can see them safely removed from the fray so they can find their way to triage and spare one of our own from death."

Fariden nods to you.

Elurora grins at Darkewolff.

Retreating and FLEEing in Combat

You say, "Where the issue of being able to retreat from the enemy is concerned, this is something that happens on occasion. Sometimes, the enemy is so skilled, it is difficult, if not impossible, to find your way away from them. In these cases, it is important to remember that there is no shame in FLEEing from the battle to receive much-needed healing, or even just a moment to breathe and re-gather your focus."

Darkewolff smiles at Elurora.

Elurora chuckles.

You say, "With that being said, sometimes we find ourselves in a situation where we are unable to get away, through any means. In these cases, it is best to remain as calm as possible and simply - keep fighting. For those of us who have chosen the adventuring path in life, death is sadly something we must accept as unavoidable, on occasion. In those situations, it is best to keep fighting, take down as many of the enemy troops as possible... and go down swinging. Though, with the assistance of the field draggers, this can sometimes be avoided by simply announcing that you require assistance in stepping away and, if someone is available, they may be able to help before it comes to death."

Tirost nods.

Darkewolff smirks.

Darkewolff grins at Elurora.

Elurora gives Darkewolff a playful poke in the ribs.

Elurora takes a sip of her chai.

Communication

You say, "Which brings me to the next important point I would like to make. That being one of... communication. Communication is the absolute KEY to success in battle. Make sure you are able to LISTEN to those around you. If you require healing in battle, call out for the field empaths so they know you require assistance. If you are a field empath and you are at risk of overhealing and require a moment to tend to yourself, call it out, so others know. If a field empath says they are unable to heal at present and you are in need of healing, take this as your cue to step away from the battle momentarily and find your way to triage so you can receive healing there and return to battle when able."

Elurora nods to you.

You say, "There is no shame in having to step away from battle briefly for tending at triage. This is the point of the triage and it is important we make use of it when available. It is how we maintain our numbers and stay strong, especially when a battle turns lengthy."

Belzor nods at you, obviously agreeing with your views.

Elurora nods at you, obviously agreeing with your views.

To Split or Not to Split Groups

You say, "Another important point is that of groups. Several suggestions were brought forward regarding splitting our numbers into multiple groups. This is something that sounds wonderful in theory, but does not always work as well in practice. Largely due to the fact that we do not always have the numbers to support it. At most, we have, on occasion, had the numbers to split into two groups, as we did during the defense against the snowbeasts, but it is rare for us to have the numbers to split into any more groups than this. The reasoning - is strength in numbers. We lack the luxury of a large number of field empaths to cover a split into numerous groups. While having so many in one place can feel hectic, if we only have three field empaths, it is easier for them to keep an eye on the calls for help together and listen to each other so one can take over while another tends to themself rather than splitting into three groups with one empath each and expecting one healer to tend to so man."

You cough.

Elurora glances at Darkewolff.

Elurora takes a sip of her chai.

Darkewolff just nudged Elurora.

Jaelia takes a sip of her tea.

Elurora looks at Darkewolff, obviously trying not to grin.

You say, "Pardon me."

You say, "I meant to say one healer to tend to so many fighters at once. There is a method to the madness, even if it seems like that method retains the madness."

Belzor gazes at you.

Elurora nods to you.

Darkewolff nods at you, obviously agreeing with your views.

Fariden grins at you.

Calling for Retreat

You say, "Lastly, I would like to address the important training point of - the retreat. This is a difficult lesson to discuss, but there are a few aspects of this that require conversation."

You say, "I understand that things can feel frantic in battle. When there are so many warriors and so many enemies in one place, it can feel overwhelming. It can feel impossible. When you are struggling to find your way away from an enemy soldier, it can feel like everything is falling apart and that we need to just run. This is a natural reaction and I completely understand it."

You say, "That being said, we cannot order a retreat simply because things feel like... a lot. War is... a lot. That is the very nature of a battle of such scale. But it is important that we keep in mind that, even if it feels like things are utter chaos, it does not mean we are losing. For all we know, we are mere moments away from victory and we are simply in the thick of the worst of it before the last of the enemy falls."

Elurora gazes thoughtfully at you.

You say, "To be clear, I am not saying a retreat is never necessary, as it absolutely is, on occasion. But it should not be the first thought the defensive group has when things feel crazy. Chaos is a part of battle. Feeling overwhelmed is a part of taking on an enemy of significant skill that requires more attention than we may be used to giving to the creatures upon which we sharpen our swords to train. And, while it is unfortunate to say - watching a few of your fellow warriors fall is also an unavoidable reality. It does not mean we are losing. It just means that those non-combat roles have a job to do to get the fallen back on their feet while the rest of us hold the line so those who have fallen do not end up having fallen in vain."

Fariden ponders.

Belzor pets his russet lynx.

You say, "Also, with regard to retreats, I want to remind everyone that such a decision is not one to be taken lightly, for many reasons. The largest of which being the difficulty in organizing it. Calling for everyone to fall back is not so simple as merely calling out and moving away. Whoever is leading your group cannot simply separate themselves from the enemy and lead their warriors to safety. Orchestrating a large group of warriors to fall back and move can, at times, be absolutely impossible."

Elurora nods at you, obviously agreeing with your views.

Tirost smiles at Kintryn.

You say, "So, with that in mind - If your leader calls for a retreat, they should also follow it up with which direction they intend to retreat to. When this happens, do your best to back away from your enemy and move in the direction stated. If you cannot retreat, call out for assistance. If no assistance is available, due to others suffering a similar struggle, then this is one of those unfortunate situations where there may be nothing left to do but to keep fighting until either one of three things happen: Assistance becomes available, the enemy falls, or... death comes. It is always our intent to avoid the latter at all costs, but, again... sometimes there is simply nothing to be done and we must accept that it is a risk we take when we draw our swords in battle."

Belzor nods to you.

Elurora chews on her lip, looking deep in concentration.

Xionara nods to Fariden.

You say, "The last thing I wish to address regarding the call for retreat is... please, leave that call and announcement to whoever is leading your group. In the chaos of battle, our warriors are not always able to differentiate between who is saying what. If they hear the word retreat, even if they were not worried, they could become worried, and it can cause a panic among the soldiers. Instead, if you feel a retreat is necessary, I urge you to make private contact in some way with the leader of your group to make the suggestion. They may take it, they may not, but it is better this way than for multiple people to be calling out for a retreat and creating confusion."

Akolu nods to you.

Stay Together

You say, "Lastly, I want to touch on the importance of everyone staying with the group. I can understand where some people want to be helpful and leave the group to fight on their own. While I can respect your desire to get to fighting as quickly as possible if the group is moving a bit slower, but keep in mind that separating from the group drastically increases the odds of you becoming injured... or dead... and, then, also increases the workload of our empaths and clerics. If the leader of your group feels additional, singular roles are necessary, they will address it. If you feel a singular role is needed, communicate it. But please... for your safety and for the preservation of group numbers, try not to simply wander off."

You say, "In closing, I will say that I understand several of you who embark on these patrols with the Mountain Guard are not actual members of the Guard. Those of you who are not members, I recognize our members cannot tell you what to do, but it would be my request that you work with us as much as possible so that our defense can retain as much semblance of organization as possible. Please respect that the defense of Ilithi is something the Mountain Guard has taken on and the success of it is extremely important to us. Any deviation can be the difference between victory and defeat."

Conclusion and Conversation

You say, "With all that being said, I invite you all to resume preparations for the patrol while we take a few moments for anyone to come forward with any questions you might have, either regarding the training information, or anything else of interest or concern anyone might like to address."

Belzor nods at you, obviously agreeing with your views.

You smile.

Elurora smiles at you.

Elurora says to you, "Thank you, that was all very good to learn."

You smile at Elurora.

Darkewolff asks Elurora, "And what is my tactical maneuver again?"

Elurora asks Darkewolff, "Standing in front of me?"

Elurora looks at Darkewolff, obviously trying not to grin.

Darkewolff says, "Ah okay."

Darkewolff nods.

Xionara ponders.

Darkewolff says, "Human shield, got it."

Elurora asks you, "I have a question, if I might?"

You say, "I know that things have changed a great deal since those old days, but there were still a great many excellent tactical lessons to be learned from them."

You nod to Elurora.

Elurora asks you, "Or maybe more of a suggestion?"

Elurora furrows her brow.

You say, "Of course."

You say to Elurora, "I have a question for you as well, after I see if I can answer yours."

You chuckle.

Elurora says to you, "It might be useful to practice moving together as a group in combat when we can control things a bit better. With something less dangerous than we faced last time."

You nod to Elurora.

You say to Elurora, "I have thought about this as well. Perhaps a training exercise in the near future."

Fariden quietly says, "Seems like a lot of the speech boiled down to: know your limits. Don't overtax yourself, because that increases the burdens on others."

Elurora smiles at you.

Jaelia raises her hand.

Belzor says, "That should help a bit."

Belzor says, "Oh yes, quite helpful indeed."

Belzor smiles.

Xionara angles her ears forward in curiosity.

You say to Fariden, "That is the long and short of it, but also... there is no shame in having to step away from a battle momentarily if your life, or someone else's, depends on it."

Elurora asks you, "What was your question for me?"

You smile at Elurora.

You ask Elurora, "In the event that it is determined during battle for a second group to be formed - would you be willing to lead it?"

Darkewolff shakes his head.

Darkewolff says, "Bad idea."

Elurora chews on her lip, looking deep in concentration.

Pyppa smiles at Elurora.

Pyppa pats Elurora on the back.

You say to Elurora, "It is not required, if you prefer not to. But I wanted to make the offer."

Jaelia asks, "As a Triage Cleric, can I also confirm - so everyone knows - if they do a full depart, which temple and room they will go to within the Shard Province? This is the thing people are most loathed to do, at times, I get it if you have expensive temporary scrolls memorized, but for those who do not, and once a war starts - that might be something that you have to fall back on. And it is sometimes faster to recover and regroup with that?"

Shuya rhythmically says to you, "That was an astouding speech, by the way. I feel inspired! I will write an epic song. I can hear it now... Ayrell's Alluring Adagio~."

Elurora asks you, "I am useful as a Paladin for my ability to inspire people, I would be more than happy to LEAD, but I might ask that you still call out commands and be in charge if that makes sense?"

Elurora blushes, the tips of her ears turning a delicate scarlet hue.

Darkewolff flails his arms about.

You smile at Shuya.

You nod to Elurora.

You say to Elurora, "If a second group is needed and you do take on the responsibility of LEADing it, I would be more than happy to assist in any way that I can."

You say to Elurora, "You and I can maintain communication throughout the battle."

Shuya rhythmically says to Seydin, "Speaking of... would you mind possibly guarding me pre-emptively? Not tooting my own horn, but I do look rather fetching today. Don't want to end up on the wrong end of a spear."

Seydin moves into position to cover Shuya from harm.

Mendira giggles at Shuya.

Shuya praises Seydin.

Seydin nods to Shuya.

Elurora says to you, "Thank you, I am not very experienced when it comes to being in command as it were. As I am often reminded by other Elves, I am very young."

Elurora grins at you.

You smile at Elurora.

You chuckle.

You say, "I understand completely."

Ezerak chuckles.

Xionara softly says, "Going to head back to Zoluren. Good luck, hope for routine patrol."

Darkewolff says to Elurora, "You will do just fine."

Xionara's ears perk up happily.

You nod politely to Xionara.

Xionara smiles.

Pyppa smiles at Elurora.

Darkewolff smiles at Xionara.

Xionara waves to you.

Darkewolff waves to Xionara.

Xionara waves to Darkewolff.

Elurora smiles at Darkewolff.

You wave to Xionara.

Black Fox Xionara slinks east.

Pyppa says, "Elurora you will be amazing."

Elurora looks at Pyppa and blushes.

Mendira grins at Elurora.

Elurora says to Pyppa, "I will do my best, as always."

Jaelia asks, "Sorry to keep that short, with a full depart, do the end up in the Temple of Light or Temple of Dark, and do they all know where Triage is?"

Darkewolff says to Elurora, "Use the pointy end of your blade and say, "That way."

Pyppa grins at Elurora.

Elurora chuckles at Darkewolff.

Darkewolff smiles at Elurora.

You say, "We do have a smaller group this evening, so I do not anticipate the need for any splitting of groups. So, there is that, at least."

You chuckle.

Shuya nods to you.

Mendira says to Jaelia, "When people depart, they awaken in the Temple of Light, at Eylhaar's altar."

Elurora says to Darkewolff, "If it was that easy, anyone could do it, including an idiot with a sharp stick."

Jaelia nods to Mendira.

You nod to Mendira.

Darkewolff roots around the area for a moment.

Darkewolff forages around the area for a while until he finds an apple stick.

Darkewolff offers Elurora an apple stick.

Elurora gives Darkewolff a little prod between the shoulder blades.

Darkewolff waves an apple stick around.

You say, "And I know we have visited the triage location a few times on our patrols, but we can always visit it again, if anyone has not been."

Elurora takes a sip of her chai.

Darkewolff winks at Elurora.

Akolu nods to you.

Jaelia nods.

Shuya rhythmically says, "I don't think I know where it is, I'm afraid. Just a quick peek? I'll commit it to memory."

You say, "Just remember... the location should NEVER be addressed on the gweth. Not publicly, anyway."

Seydin asks, "Would anyone be willing to check my nerves?"

Elurora asks Darkewolff, "Is that your way of saying I should be that idiot?"

Elurora just nudged Darkewolff.

You nod to Shuya.

You smile.

You say, "We will stop by while we walk."

Darkewolff gawks at Elurora.

Darkewolff exclaims to Elurora, "I would never!"

Darkewolff gasps!

Elurora snickers at Darkewolff.

You ask, "Is everyone about ready to begin?"

You smile.

Pyppa says, "I have one request..."

Ezerak nods to you.

Elurora nods to you.

You nod to Pyppa.

Miskton nods to you.

Elurora chuckles at Darkewolff.

Darkewolff grins slowly at Elurora.

Pyppa says, "As the only EMpath here this evening... if you are gravely injured and I miss it.. SPEAK up."

Pyppa smiles.

Pyppa says, "Thank you."

You nod in agreement.

Darkewolff says to Elurora, "You missed your opening."

Darkewolff winks.

You say, "Yes. That is where the communication is key."

Darkewolff moves over to guard Elurora.

Elurora laughs at Darkewolff.

Darkewolff hums to himself.

Elurora says to Pyppa, "Now something has to get through him and me."

Elurora grins at Pyppa.

You say, "Never be afraid to ask for help."

Pyppa chuckles at Elurora.

Pyppa grins.

You say, "In the chaos, sometimes it is easier to hear than to see something."

Elurora nods at you, obviously agreeing with your views.

Elurora says to you, "When that assassin fellow attacked, I don't think I saw him through the bodies until after you were already down."

Elurora blushes, the tips of her ears turning a delicate scarlet hue.

You nod to Elurora.

You say, "Sometimes things can happen very... very fast."

You chuckle.

Ezerak nods at you, obviously agreeing with your views.

Miskton nods in agreement.

Ezerak says, "That's certainly an example of how fast things can happen."

Ezerak chuckles.

Comfrin shakes Darkewolff's hand.

Darkewolff shakes Comfrin's hand.

Jaelia says to Elurora, "I think Lady Ayrell and Miskton were going to fall regardless of anything we could have done. They had a super pointy sticky for eyeball poking. Serious weaponry there."

Elurora says to Jaelia, "He was very quick."

Miskton chuckles.

Belzor asks you, "Lieutenant, shall I join with you?"

You say, "I try to keep a few precautions in place so I do not stay down long, in the event that I fall."

You smile at Belzor.

You nod to Belzor.

Jaelia says to Elurora, "And seemed quite determined."

You say, "Yes, anyone who has not joined with me, please do so now."

Belzor joins your group.

Elurora nods at Jaelia, obviously agreeing with her views.

Jaelia nods to Elurora.

Comfrin joins your group.

Ezerak nods.

Darkewolff says to Comfrin, "Good to see you down here."

Elurora takes a sip of her chai.

You say, "We will move in five."

Jaelia takes a sip of her tea.

Jaelia moves a porcelain cup of currant tea to her left hand.

Darkewolff asks Elurora, "Warm?"

You say, "Moving."

You go east, leading your group.
