Look: The slim quarto volume is bound in glossy, dark brown leather with a pebbled, almost scaly texture to it. Its few pages are edged in gold, and a red silk ribbon is sewn into the binding. An unmistakeable aura of magic surrounds the book. Your fingers are drawn to it almost involuntarily, and you feel a strong conviction that the first person to rub the book will forge a special bond with it. It is now open.

As you rub the book, you feel a momentary weakening, as if some power had passed from you to the book.

1

You open the book to the first page. The leaf is a creamy vellum, around which sinuous shapes in forest green, leafy yellow-green, and bright orange outline the sides, top, and bottom. In the center, in bold black letters, are the words:

Shho'i'yvvh-ur
The Booke of Dragonnes

2

You open the book to the second page, a glorious illumination from edge to edge. A dragon with wings outspread coils, its scales shading from red, orange, or yellow to bronze highlights at the tips. In the center of the page, two ice-green eyes glare above a row of fangs in a gaping red maw.

3

You open the book to the third page. A skilled hand has penned a poem here in uncial letters, and the rubricator has colored each noun a brilliant red, with a touch of gold leaf on the capitals.

Bright the eye and bold its beams,
Wide the wing that wafts her high,
Iron the edge of every scale,
And keen and cold the dragon's cry.

4

You open the book to the fourth page.

Spare the shape that shades the moon,
Lean and long she lingers there,
Banks and bends her gaze below,
Then plummets prey-ward through the air.
What waits the falling felon wyrm,
What forage will her fetching find?
Who goes to greet this screaming guest
Has mastered dragons of the mind.

5

You open the book to the fifth and final page. Except for a fancy O and D, the page is blank.
