Description
You stand before an imposing gold-framed portrait depicting Sorenne Naxela, Spellbinder.
A fairly tall, middle-aged, female S'Kra Mur with black scales stares down at you. Her slitted gold-flecked amber eyes seem to follow you around the room: a stern stare that appears to be judging your worthiness before the Gods.
She has a shapely figure with a kinked tail that is not very well disguised by a flowing silk tail drape. A shadowy orb rippling with silver arcs of light hovers near her like a will-o-wisp.
She is wearing a bronze and sunstone por'nidrel, some rich brown ceremonial robes crafted from a roughspun silk jacquard, a burlap sack for gathered souls and some low-heeled ankle boots with cut scrollwork cuffs.
She holds a worn leather-bound volume of "The Immortals" in her right hand and a luminous tower shield dimmed by the mass of swirling darkness engulfing a shadow beast in her left hand.
Before Joining the Guild
She was born into a life of wealth and stature on the 26th day of the 4th month of Shorka the Cobra in the year of the Amber Phoenix, 346 years after the victory of Lanival the Redeemer in the busy town of Crossing. Her mother, the only child of a wealthy trader, was a professor of linguistics at Asemath Academy, and expected her daughter to follow in her footsteps. She knows nothing of her father, who presumably died in an invasion just before she was born. Her mother would never speak of him.
From the moment she could speak, Sorenne was thrust into every aspect of academia, despite all her protests. She hated the life at the Academy.
On her 13th birthday, she was 'surprised' with the knowledge that she would be sent to a prominent University in the south. The thought of being stuck forever in a career she never wanted filled Sorenne with so much dread that she ran away from home in the spirit of teenage rebellion.
With meager funds and an appalling lack of provisions, she soon found herself stranded on the pier at Riverhaven. An old, battle-weary Paladin took pity on the scared and hungry girl, offering her food and shelter in his home near Therenborough.
They lived comfortably in his rustic cabin. He never asked her any questions about her past, and she never asked him about his. Over the years, he taught her to fight and protect herself. He was an avid reader, and, in time, she learnt to appreciate the value of books. Perhaps, most importantly, he taught her the principles by which he lived his life.
Two days after her 18th birthday, she returned to the cabin after a successful hunting trip to find her dear friend collapsed on the ground. His heart had grown weary of life and simply stopped beating. Her time in Therenborough was at an end. His death signalled the end of her self-imposed exile, and she knew she had to return home and make peace with her mother.
She returned home too late.
Crossing is a city prone to attacks from vile creatures. The night before Sorenne's return, her mother had been killed in an unexpected invasion.
Seeking solace in her grief and guilt at the local chapel, she felt the hands of Hav'roth, Peri'el and Ushnish upon her; comforting and guiding her. It was then that she found her calling: to serve the Gods.
Life as a Cleric
Sorenne followed the teachings of her first mentor, incorporating his stern, unyielding principles to the teachings of her Gods...and the city she once hated with a passion became her home.
In the early days, she rarely ventured far from Crossing and she made many friends. She would harangue the souls of the unworthy in Clerics' Guild when corpses were brought to her for resurrection. Yet, Sorenne had a kind heart and would take time to help the souls that were truly penitent.
Later, Sorenne found herself in Ilithi where she met a noble Kaldaran Paladin, Laarth Frozenfyre, who impressed her with his zeal and honour to protect those under his care. Sorenne became a citizen of Shard and was given the role of Lieutenant in the militia under Laarth's Stormbringer Brigade.
As she climbed the ranks in her guild, she realised that she had a true interest in scholarly pursuits and would spend many nights learning about the S'Kra Mur culture, a culture that she was not very familiar with due to her background. She was also avidly interested in the nature of Holy Magic and the relation to the Gods.
Her scholarly interest attracted the attentions of a group of scholars in Ilithi who asked her to join their order. She agreed and became the leading scholar for the Divine in the group.
Sorenne has since returned to Crossing, shying away from the activities that she used to be actively engaged in.
