Swimming is the skill that lets you navigate through bodies of water when you don't have a boat, raft, or other means to avoid it. Bodies of water have a few common properties, such as the current strength and depth. Large, rushing rivers like the Jantspyre or the Faldesu require a fair or large amount of skill to avoid being swept away, while more placid waters such as the Arthe Dale swimming hole hardly take any. Still others are little more than large puddles that only get your feet wet (ie, the little brook you wade through on you way to and from Tiger Clan).

Your ability to swim around in a particular body of water depents on several factors. Skill is a large portion of that, but your strength, stamina, encumbrance level (for you older players out there who recall this happening before, encumbrance no longer makes you learn better), and injuries also can help or impede it. Outside of personal factors, current strength and depth can hinder your progress.
