Mainni and her brother were orphaned and raised in a secluded Rakash village by their uncle. Having lost a foot in a hunting accident, and refusing empathic help, he was fiercely protective of his young charges. For Mainni, that protection meant a childhood spent largely indoors, without contact with other races or the opportunity to learn any language beyond Rakash.
Necessity eventually opened the door that caution had kept shut. As her uncle became less able to travel, bringing supplies to the village grew increasingly difficult. Mainni left for the Crossing while still a very young woman, seeking instruction in the Moon Mage Guild. Her ambition was practical, if considerable: she would learn to open moongates so that her uncle and her village would no longer depend upon journeys he could not make.
On the journey east, her most unusual companions came without introduction. While sitting beneath a tree one day, Mainni began to sing. A swarm of bees gathered around her head, moving through the air as though dancing to her song. When she left the tree, they followed.
They have remained with her ever since. Whether drawn by her voice, some quality of her magic, or a reason known only to bees, the little swarm has become a familiar part of Mainni’s presence. For a young woman raised with so little company, their arrival was an unexpected kindness: she had gone out into the world, sung a song, and found herself accompanied. They became her pack.
Reaching the Crossing, the transition was deeply difficult. The Crossing was crowded with unfamiliar people, customs, and languages, and Mainni had little experience to help her navigate any of them. Her difficulty speaking Common often concealed how much she understood, leaving her struggling to make herself known in a world she had scarcely been allowed to imagine.
When her uncle fell ill, Mainni returned to the village to care for him. She remained there for four years, her life once again secluded and her tentative steps into the wider world interrupted.
Upon finally returning to the Crossing, Mainni met Senvara, another young Rakash and an Empath. Senvara took her under her wing and brought her into the Karavir pack, offering friendship and a place to belong as Mainni began the difficult work of adjusting once more.
Mainni still speaks little Common. Her most familiar explanation is also a plea to be understood: “Mainni not dumb. Mainni not speak good.”
Those who hear her speak Rakash, or converse with her while Aura of Tongues is sung, encounter an intelligent, articulate young woman whose thoughts far exceed her limited Common vocabulary.
Her progress as a Moon Mage has been difficult for reasons beyond language. Mainni will not hunt, and despite the purpose that first brought her to the guild, she refuses to open moongates. She fears dying and losing her bees, which leave her whenever she dies. The companions who first approached her beneath a tree have become too precious for her to willingly risk their absence.
Mainni’s place in the Crossing is still taking shape. With Senvara’s friendship, the welcome of the Karavir pack, and her faithful swarm close at hand, she is slowly finding room for herself beyond the sheltered life she once knew.
