Introduced with Tuesday Tidings 211.
Appearance
You see Researcher Trelmik, a Gor'Tog Ranger.
Trelmik has an elongated face, dull black eyes and a cleft palate. He has light green skin and a very fit figure.
He appears to be in the prime of his life.
He is in reasonably good shape.
He is wearing a multi-colored vest, a long-sleeved red and white polka-dot shirt, a large belt sporting an alabaster skinning knife, a saffron-colored tome, a pair of forest-green trousers, a goldweave satchel, a dark green morgawr leather thigh quiver and some dusty knee-high black boots.
Interactions
You've overheard others asking Trelmik about a number of topics, including crystals, dust, defense, attacks, magic, cobras, Trelmik and tasks.
Crystals
"Oh! Most curious artifacts," Trelmik states. "I have theorized that they are somehow the key to keeping the cobras from melting themselves from within. Perhaps they are the remains of some organ that facilitates the hardening and softening of their lava-like, flowing scales. In death, it quickly cools and hardens into these dusty crystals we find. I would be very interested in recovering more specimens for further study, but dealing with them directly is a touch beyond my specialties. Perhaps you could assist with such a task?"
Dust
Trelmik begins, "Ah yes, the crystal remains. When crushed and the dust applied liberally to oneself, it seems to create a sort of barrier against the harshest of cobras' effects -- the intensely pulsing heat waves or the disruptions to the very ground they move upon that makes hitting them more difficult. The crystal's color seems to indicate which effect it's best suited to defend against."
Defense
Researcher Trelmik lectures, "The dust is the key, you see. While living, the cobras shift the organ to adjust the hardness of their scales as a defensive measure -- radiating fiery heat to keep jabbing attackers at bay or unbalancing the earthy ground to make it more difficult for further slicing attacks. In death, these organs harden and turn to crystal, but somehow the function is maintained. Perhaps it is a magical evolution, and the magic persists when the cobra perishes. More research is needed! Still, it is to our advantage -- more of the appropriate dust ablates more of the cobra's defensive auras, though there may be a point where more dust stops helping."
Attacks
Trelmik giddily starts, "From what I have observed, the magma cobras are very capable adapters. If you slice at them with sharpened weapons or attack styles, their scales harden to blunt further attacks. On the other hand, if you jab and pierce such hardened scales, it breaks the protection and lets the contained magma flow more freely -- increasing the heat they give off to extremely dangerous levels if too much piercing occurs. Faster and more hits increase the rate and intensity of this shifting. I am convinced that a capable fighter and tactician, who can well manage their attacks between the two extremes by observing the noticeable shifts, can keep the cobras' harsh effects to a minimum, perhaps needing none of the protective dusts at all! It is a constantly shifting balance -- too far to either side can rapidly become deadly!"
Magic
Researcher Trelmik leans close and conspiratorially says, "Anyone who has encountered the cobras can easily recall their deadly magics, but a word to those magicians considering employing magic against the cobras -- use caution! My unscientific observations of a few such combatants have shown more unpredictable and wild swings of the cobras' shifting scale protections as deadly magics are hurled at them. Woe unto fire mages in particular -- the cobras seem to drink the heat from such attacks to heal themselves with! Truly skilled magicians who understand their spells can alternate between their options to manage the shifting swings, but hurling a single spell repeatedly can quickly push the cobras to one extreme or the other. Take care!"
Cobras
Trelmik shudders, "Nasty creatures, they are. Magma cobras are huge! One look at the magma flowing beneath the creature's thick, stone scales and those black fangs and forked tongue, make me want to run! Don't even get me started on the magic they must employ to manipulate the very nature of their environment."
Trelmik
Trelmik nods. "What you see, is what you get. I'm just simple folk, looking to learn a thing or two, while living the good life outdoors."
Task
Researcher Trelmik looks at you and says, "You are not currently on a task. If you wish to undertake a task, simply ask me FOR a task."
Ask For Task
Researcher Trelmik exclaims, "Oh! You want to help me in my research? Well, I have a need for you! Those magma cobras over in the volcano are quite the puzzle."
Trelmik continues, "I've been looking into them for quite a while. I can always use some more research fodder," he mumbles. "How about this, you bring me 4 orange crystals and 4 brown crystals from those snakes, and I'll let you have one of these boxes I've collected over my years of hunting?"
[You have until (30 days from point of asking) to complete this task.]
