Instrument Messaging

Could you give me a bit of context for your question? There are tons of different messages for instruments, depending on what's being played and how skilled they are. Are you just looking for a list of things to squelch? -CARAAMON (talk) 12:12, 14 August 2017 (CDT)

I don't know what "squelch" means in this context. I'm looking for a list of messages for stringed and percussion instruments, depending on what style and what type of song is being played, as a) I am having a hard time figuring out if I'm making any progress and b) I could use the messaging in performance if I actually knew it. Also, I'm finding that it's possible to improve in performance skill while making no progress on the messaging--or to improve in one style but not another (despite not having practiced one more than the other). It's extraordinarily confusing, and I'd really like to know what messages I should be looking for and how I can improve my skill. Because just practicing over and over isn't telling me either. To answer the first part of your question, "squelch"ing, is supressing messages on your frontend so they do not clutter your story window. It's a way of hiding messages.

To the second part, to start training Performance you need an easy instrument. I would recomment a lyre. You can find the list of instruments from easiest to hardest on the Instruments page. Start with a lyre and PLAY SCALES HALTING ON LYRE. Once you've mastered that you can PLAY SCALES ON LYRE, then move up to PLAY DITTY ON LYRE, and so on. PLAY HELP lists the song types in order of difficulty. Remember to get a chamois cloth and CLEAN LYRE WITH CLOTH after every practice session. Dirty instruments are harder to play and do not train well. Cleaning will also prevent them from taking damage. Unless your instrument is made from metal or glass, don't use it outside in the rain either. If your instrument does get wet, WIPE LYRE WITH CLOTH and then WRING CLOTH.

Performance moves like most skills, slowly. To improve your skill you need to play a challenging song on your instrument. You will get the most training when playing with a "slightest hint of difficulty". This means the song is just above your level and ideal for practice. If you "fumble" the song, it is too hard. If you play the song "master"fully, it is below your level. As a point of reference, by a little over 400 ranks in Performance you'll be able to play a gavotte on the easiest instruments (such as a lyre), but only a wedding march on harder instruments (such as bagpipes or harp). By a little over 600 ranks you'll be able to play any song on the easiest instruments. - padhg (talk) 23:39, 14 August 2017 (CDT)

I know about cleaning and drying instruments and playing the various song styles. I still need to see the actual scripts. Even if I can't perform them yet, I could still use them via the ACTION verb. That would be quite helpful in an upcoming audition. (And it would be nice to know what progress actually looks like. So far, I'm alternating between "you play effortlessly," "slightest hint of difficulty" and "fumbling." The instruments pages in this wiki give no indication of what the messages correspond to in terms of skill. Most other articles have a lot of information about how skilled you need to be--or what classes and abilities that you need to have--in order to get certain results from armor, weapons,
