Tribute to Old Bards, 10/5/2002 Produced and Hosted by Dewsong deRosa Half Pint Inn

As transcribed by Mykk Dalys

Special note: Dewsong shows us good Bards never die--they live on forever in their performances and the memories they leave behind. Thank you Dewsong!

It has been 370 years, 89 days since the Victory of Lanival the Redeemer. It is the 3rd month of Lirisa the Archer in the year of the Crystal Snow Hare. It is currently spring and it is night. You have a feeling it's near the Anlas of Asketi's Hunt.

The sky has a few scattered clouds in it.

Location

[Half Pint, Bards' Corner] In sharp contrast to the Main Saloon and more boisterous reaches of The Half Pint, this quiet chamber is softly lit and tastefully decorated with antique tapestries depicting famed minstrels and legendary troubadours from the annals of Elanthia. The room itself has no tables and chairs, but rather a recessed wooden seating pit with overstuffed cushions scattered about the floor. At the far end is a raised platform with a lectern, a low ottoman and a music stand. You also see a pitted steel caddy labeled "DRINKS HERE", a mug of Mule Spit Ale, a woven sack, and a dimly lit arch.

Concert

Dewsong says, "I think we're about ready to begin the music... " Dewsong casually observes the area. Dewsong exclaims, "We're going to get things started tonight with a lively tune!" Dewsong exclaims, "So I want all you bards in the audiance to sing with me, I want a nice and thunderous chorus!" Dewsong grins.

Dewsong says, "The song we're starting with needs little introduction, "Life of the Dance" by that self-addressed wonderful rouge, Kortny Horselords."

Dewsong slowly strums a pulsing rhythm on his rosewood bones, mathing each chord with an intricate dance step.

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"I was born to the sound of a screaming cry,
But I will dance till the day I die.
Ever since I heard my first lullabye,
I couldn't just let my feet lie."

Dewsong smiles as he whirls around, his cloak and hair flying, as he taps a counter melody with his boots.

A chorus of voices join with Dewsong's leading tenor as he sings:

   "Dance, dance, everyone dance!
Come on, join in the romance!
    Come on, tap your feet!
Come on, get off your seat!"

Dewsong says, "that's right, up on those toes..." Dewsong grins at Shenney. Shenney kicks one foot out in a graceful arc, and with a dip of her shoulders and a tinkling of toe bells, she pirouettes in a dazzling spin! Dewsong continues to dance, he suddenly whirls to a stop and winks at you then continues.

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

   "When I was only three,
A bard came and sang for me.
With halting steps, I began to sway,
And I did not stop dancing all that day."

Dewsong 's bones blur as a rapid dance rhythm escapes from them.

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"When I finally reached the age of eight,
Till after dinner I could hardly wait.
For my family would move the table and chairs,
And haul out their bardic wares."

A chorus of voices join with Dewsong's leading tenor as he sings:

   "Dance, dance, everyone dance!
Come on, join in the romance!
    Come on, tap your feet!
Come on, get off your seat!"

Dewsong winks.

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"Then I hit the age of thirteen
And the prettiest girl I had ever seen
    Was swaying to the music.
Oh wow, that did make me lose it."

Dewsong grabs a girl from the front of the audience and swings her up on the stage. Dewsong sweeps Khestryl into a dance. Dewsong sweeps Shenney into a dance. Dewsong sweeps Kithria into a dance.

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"Well I just turned twenty this day,
And that pretty girl has had her say.
Now I am all dressed up in my best,
As we start the first dance, at our wedding fest."

A chorus of voices join with Dewsong's leading tenor as he sings:

   "Dance, dance, everyone dance!
Come on, join in the romance!
    Come on, tap your feet!
Come on, get off your seat!"

Dewsong slowly changes the tempo to hauntingly familiar lullabye.

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"Well music does warm our home today,
Because a sweet baby in a cradle does lay.
And as I sing softly, she moves her feet,
To the rhythm of an unseen beat."

Dewsong smiles as he speeds the tempo back up.

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"A young lad won my daughter's hand today,
My daughter would never leave if I had my say.
But my daughter looked me right in the eye,
And these words she whispered as said goodbye."

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"And I guess when I die,
After my last friend has said goodbye,
The chapel bell will give a ring,
And a ghostly voice will softly sing."

A tear runs down Dewsong's face.

Dewsong winks. A chorus of voices join with Dewsong's leading tenor as he sings:

   "Dance, dance, everyone dance!
Come on, join in the romance!
    Come on, tap your feet!
Come on, get off your seat!"

Dewsong smiles as he twirls to a stop, his cape and his hair twirling about him as he bows. Dewsong chuckles.

Dewsong exclaims, "Thanks for that great chorus!" Dewsong grins. Dewsong says, "I'd like to welcome you all to the Old Bard's Concert"

Dewsong says, "As you all know, this is going to be a night of the music that was playing long ago, some somber, some silly, all wonderful... "

Dewsong says, "Tonight we'll be showcasing the works of eight bards, some still with us, some long departed, "

Dewsong says, "I'll be helped in this by three great bardesses, Shenney Morynna, Ariya Wolgamott, and Khestryl Nesbitt" Dewsong grins.

Dewsong says, "So lean back, get yourself a drink or five, while we take you back into the days of Kortny, Manawydan, Mckatelee, and many others..." Shenney wistfully says, "Kortny"

Dewsong says, "To get things going, I have to tell that when I first started putting this concert together, I was asked if I was going to sing any of my own songs."

Dewsong asks wryly, "And how could I say no to a question like that?"

Dewsong puts his bones in his dusty rose pouch.

Dewsong says, "Anyway, going to get me out of the way before moving on to the great ones, this is one of my really early pieces, "written before the city was built," as I used to say." Dewsong gets a graceful rosewood lute inlaid with vibrant ruby rose blooms from inside his lute case.

Dewsong says, "I call it, "Roses the Color of the Night""

Weaving a melancholy tone that saddens the soul, a slow ballad glides from Dewsong's rosewood lute.

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"What is this thing called love?

The man at the bar says it's a gamble,
that it's a game you always lose,
that if you're going to play,
then you'd best get used to drinking alone."

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"The woman across the way knows it's a line,
that men drop "I love you"'s like bait
whenever they feel like getting some."

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

   "The children can't define it,
       maybe they know best.

    Maybe."

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"Maybe love is just a lie,
       and lust the only fact."

Weaving a melancholy tone that saddens the soul, a slow ballad glides from Dewsong's rosewood lute.

Dewsong emphatically sings in a tenor voice:

"No, I could never believe that.
I have felt the power of love
and lust is a whimpering thing next to that."

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"I always knew that roses are red,
but now I know that they're also pink and white.

I've even seen roses the color of the night."

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"I've learned that love is a weeping rose.
It only cries in the rain,
         where it's safe."

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"I want to love her like a dream,
But I want it to be real,
Real for her, real for me,

Real for all the poets lined along the wall,"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"Real for the man at the bar,
toasting us with his glass of pain,
letting hope enter his heart again,"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"Real for the woman across the way
       unclenching her unlighted cigarette
       As she begins to see
there's more to love than lust,"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

   "There's even more than a
A rose the color of the night
crying in the saftey of the rain,"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"And real for all the children,
especially the ones we used to be..."

With an almost lazy movement on the strings, Dewsong plays an aimless melody coaxing the notes into a clean, dulcet tone. Dewsong smiles. Dewsong bows. Dewsong says, "thanks, nice to knock some of the dust off of that every now and then..."

Dewsong says, "the next song was going to be "Library Garden Love," but the bardess scheduled to perform it hasn't arived yet, so we're going to push it back in the order... " Dewsong chuckles. Dewsong says, "unavoidable snafu I'm sure, but it does mean I won't get the break I was counting on..." Dewsong chortles softly at some secret joke. Dewsong says, "so, we're just going to go straight on to the next one for now"

Dewsong says, "Manawydan was one of the finest bards, a true friend to elder bards, and a paragon for younger ones to aspire to." Dewsong says, "Not to mention someone that really knew how to have a good water fight" Dewsong grins at Shenney. Shenney quietly says, "A flirt" Shenney grins at Dewsong. Theelos chuckles. Sephirin chuckles. Niteshiver's jaw drops. Azareal stares deeply into Theelos's eyes. Shenney says, "Well yes" Niteshiver asks, "old bards flirted?" Theelos gently kisses Azareal on the cheek. Shenney says, "Larisah can attest to that" Dewsong asks, "what's wrong with a little flirtation?" Dewsong chuckles. Sephirin says, "they invented it" Sephirin nods to Niteshiver. Theelos flirts with Azareal. Sephirin says, "it came before the door" Sephirin says, "and fire" Azareal giggles. Theelos winks at Azareal with a playful sparkle in his eyes. Niteshiver says, "i thought they just wrote about it" Dewsong grins at Sephirin. Shenney says, "Manawydan managed to sweep quite a few women off their feet" Shenney grins. Khestryl ponders. Azareal takes a sip of her wine.

Dewsong says, "speaking of which..." Dewsong says, "Perhaps one of his best remembered lyrics is this one, a tale of gambling and adventure with a little lechery thrown in for spice..."

Dewsong says, "and yes, it's a choral song, so won't you join in..."

Dewsong says, "so we can present, Manawydan Custennin's "Roll the Die""

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"There was a man who loved to dance
    And sing the nights away
He'd drink and laugh and kiss the maids
    Though none would ever stay
But even more he loved to play
    A dicing game of chance
He'd lay his gold with all the rest
And rob them of their pants"

A chorus of voices join with Dewsong's leading tenor as he sings:

"Roll the die and seal your fate!
    He's bound to win again
Surely Luck is by his side
    His old and longtime friend!"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"Every night he'd take the game
And fill his purse with gold
He'd smile and buy them all a drink
They'd glare at him, so cold!"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"Every night he'd take the game
And soon his smile grew smug
And all who lost would curse at him
    Vile thief! or Blackguard thug!"

A chorus of voices join with Dewsong's leading tenor as he sings:

"Roll the die and seal your fate
    The bastard's won again!
Oh look, he's taken all our gold
    My patience wears so thin!"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"Again he'd won, the night was his
    He'd taken all their gold
But then a lass came through the door
Her smile so soft yet bold"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"'They tell me so, a man near here
    Whose luck is solid rock
I'd challenge him, this man of wealth
And knock him off his block!'"

A chorus of voices join with Dewsong's leading tenor as he sings:

"Roll the die and seal your fate
    Well, look what's staggered in!
She looks as though she knows just how
To play his game and win"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"And so he rose to meet her gaze
    A piercing stare of green
He went to her and kissed her hand
    And leered at things unseen"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"'Yes my love, I'll place my bet
    I'll wager all I've got!
And if I win a night with me
    You'll spend upon my cot!"

A chorus of voices join with Dewsong's leading tenor as he sings:

"Roll the die and seal your fate!
Oh lass, you know he'll win!
So walk along and leave him be
    With his sagging chin"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"The rules were lain and how it went
    This game of wagered gold
    Whoever rolled the lowest mark
    The victory would hold"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"The man went first and threw the die
    Across the tavern floor
And up it came - a single pip!
She'd not win now for sure!"

Dewsong shakes his head. A chorus of voices join with Dewsong's leading tenor as he sings:

"Roll the die and seal your fate!
    No way she'll ever win!
He's rolled himself the lowest low
    He's beaten us again!"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"He laughed and bent to take the die
Then tossed it back to her
She nodded curt and grined so sly
    Straight at that drunken cur"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"In a blink the die was cast
He thought he'd make the gain
But Gods above! A wonderous thing!
The die was split in twain!"

A chorus of voices join with Dewsong's leading tenor as he sings:

"Roll the die and seal your fate!
    We'll not see that again!
The die is split, it's insides blank
A zero - that beats him!"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"He dropped his jaw and worked his mouth
    He lost his shattered pride
She took his purse, she took his gold
    She took his shattered pride"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"And so the man who loved to sing
And play his game of chance
Was left with no more purse of gold - Was left without his pants!"

A chorus of voices join with Dewsong's leading tenor as he sings:

"Roll the die and seal your fate!
Take heed lest you should win
Just take your gold and move along
Or lose your pants, like him!"

Dewsong laughs! Dewsong bows.

Dewsong says, "This piece is a bit different from the others you'll hear tonight. The bardess that wrote this didn't quite become as famous, or infamous, as other songwritters tonight"

Dewsong says, "However, when I met this young bardess, and heard her sing this song, all of us there that day were so moved that we all asked for permission to sing it."

Dewsong says, "And so I offer you, Korinada Dulche's song, in her words, "A tribute ... to everyone who has helped someone in need... whether it was a friend, a stranger, a young one, an elder, a deader, or someone lost...""

Dewsong says, "This is her, "Thank You""

Dewsong says, "To perform this tribute, I've asked another young bardess, currently a town crier for Riverhaven, Khestryl Nesbitt, to grace us with her voice..."

Khestryl pulls off some silver-edged gauntlets from her hands. Khestryl puts her gauntlets in her traveler's backpack. Khestryl takes a silvered chain balaclava off her head. Dewsong bows to Khestryl. Dewsong applauds. Khestryl puts her balaclava in her traveler's backpack. Khestryl smiles at Dewsong. Khestryl stands near Dewsong.

Khestryl quietly says, "Thank you for allowing me to participate, Dewsong" Khestryl quietly says, "I'm honored" Khestryl gets a tortoise-shell inlaid mandolin from inside her traveler's backpack. Theelos exclaims, "HUZAH !" Theelos bounces from where he is sitting! Khestryl grins at Theelos. Khestryl blushes, the tips of her ears turning a delicate scarlet hue. Dewsong grins. Khestryl quietly says, "My own cheering section" Khestryl blushes, the tips of her ears turning a delicate scarlet hue. Theelos leans back against Azareal with a loving smile.

Khestryl clears her throat. Khestryl quietly says, "When asked to sing for you this evening, I did not anticipate I would be handed such an appropriate and moving tune to sing." Khestryl quietly says, "So for all the bards that have gone before me and those that have helped me in my short time in our guild, I would like to add my thanks to Korinada's." Khestryl quietly says, "Thank You"

Khestryl listens carefully to the shell-inlaid mandolin, plucking the strings. Khestryl smiles. Khestryl gently traces the form of the neithrel band upon her hand, a thoughtful look upon her face. Khestryl smiles softly and returning her attention to the instrument in her hands, she gently plucks a slow tune creating a soft and quiet mood.

Khestryl quietly sings in a soprano voice:

"There are some who add laughter to the rain,
There are some who can take away the pain,
There are some who help with nothing to gain,
    ...to make life easier."

Khestryl sweetly sings in a soprano voice:

"There are some who can take the clouds away,
There are some who put sunshine in your day,
There are some who will show the better way,
    ...to make life easier."

Khestryl lovingly sings in a soprano voice:

"I looked around, and you were there,
I was afraid, you seemed to care,
I could have gone on by myself,
You took my hand and gave me help."

Khestryl tenderly sings in a soprano voice:

"There are some who will take you by the hand,
There are some who will hold you while you stand,
There are some who see everything as planned,
    ...to make life easier."

Khestryl confidently sings in a soprano voice:

"There are some who will guide you in the dark,
There are some who will show the path that's marked,
There are some who lead with an open heart,
    ...to make life easier."

Khestryl smiles and stilling the strings of her mandolin, she continues accapella.

Khestryl lovingly sings in a soprano voice:

"I could have gone on by myself,
You took my hand and gave me help. "

Khestryl quietly says, "...thank you."

Khestryl smiles shyly at you and bows deeply.

Dewsong says, "Thank you again Khestryl, for that wonderful job... " Dewsong grins. Khestryl smiles at Dewsong. Khestryl says, "My pleasure"

Dewsong says, "it's too bad that Donalisa isn't back yet, as this next song is perhaps the chilliest one... " Dewsong chuckles.

Dewsong says, "Starlighte Sylvansong is a bardess that has left an indelible mark upon many of us."

Dewsong says, "Whether it was singing about naughty unicorns or giving me this most excellent hat," Dewsong takes an elegant plumed hat off his head. Dewsong waves an elegant plumed hat around. Dewsong puts an elegant plumed hat on his head. Dewsong adjusts his plumed hat. Dewsong grins. Theelos mutters into the air something about nice hat indeed.

Dewsong says, "Starlighte worked to make the realms a little bit better place, and around her it usually was."

Dewsong says, "This song is one of her more somber pieces, a historical piece set in the Dragonspine Mountains."

Dewsong says, "this is, "Tor's Quest", by Starlighte Sylvansong.""

Dewsong plays his lute, and as he plays, a vision of a snowy night, and a group of people sitting around a roaring campfire comes into your

With a graceful potency, Dewsong strums a slow ballad on his rosewood lute.

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"Twas in the month of Nissa, And Nissa's blood runs cold,
We sat around the campfire, telling tales of old.
Suddenly the wind it blew, and blew in oh so hard,
And standing in the firelight, was a raggle-taggle Bard."

Dewsong holds his hands towards the fire to warm them up. All sitting around the campfire move a little closer together, making room for the weary stranger.

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"He shivered and he looked at us, and tears were in his eyes,
Icicles on his hair and beard, and holes in all his clothes.
Pleadingly he looked at the fire, and sat down and heaved a sigh,
We knew he had been through a lot, but only Faenella knows."

Dewsong nods knowingly, feeling the pain of this young man.

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"He asked if he could sit with us, and tell his tale of woe,
How he came to be outside, out in the driving snow.
For just the chance to sit by a fire, and warm his cold, cold bones,
This is his story, I swear it's true, but one can never know."

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"He said his name was Torienel, and that he had come so far,
Looking through the winter's night, guided by a star.
He stumbled through the snow drifts, and down a frozen road,
He never in his life had been, this very, very cold."

Dewsong shivers involuntarily as the Bard tells his tale. Exchanging glances with the others around the fire, all agree about the cold.

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"He had heard of a wonderous city, all crystalline and clean,
Known as Shard down in the south, every Elven dream.
Built from crystals, paved in gold, quiet city, city old.
Problem was in getting there, across a chasm deep,
Snowbeasts on the trail, never fail, his feet."

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"The only thing he knew to do, was take a haunted ride,
Ride with the Princess now long dead, in the gondola where she died,
Her ghostly shade was trapped, such a scared little girl,
Forevermore out in that place, forever in dire peril."

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"The ride was short, and thankfully so, his hair did stand on end,
The bump when he reached the south, told him the ride was over.
Down from the platform he did climb, and started down the road,
Still chilly here, but not as bad, he could almost smell the clover."

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"He rounded a bend and to his dismay, his shock was now entire,
For standing there not far from him, was one of the beasts of snow.
Towering over him with tooth and claw, it's eyes glowed red with fire,
He looked around and saw no refuge, just a twisting, turning trail."

Dewsong gasps as he realizes where he's heading, up the switch-back trail.

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"This must be the way to the city gold, the place to call his home,
And dodging around past the beast, he jumped for the trail.
Climbing over boulders high, and soon had found a crack,
Wedging himself deep inside, never once looking back."

Dewsong gets a look of terror in his eye, feeling the fear and panic of

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"And that is what he should have done, for in the light so dim,
He might have noticed where he was, and gotten out again.
Standing like a statue in this horrid, evil place,
Was a gargoyle made of stone, a snarl etched on it's face."

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"Further back he retreated, and closer the gargoyle came,
Slicing at him with its claw, its wings laid back in rage.
Back still further, looking now for one last place to hide,
He took a hit there, in his chest, he was torn up inside."

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"Listening to this tale of horror, we all shivered in fear,
Hearing him recall this all, made us think of places dear.
At once we turned to him, and all turned up our lamps,
But no more was he sitting there, no Elf was at our camp."

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"All we saw, where he had been, was a simple wooden flute,
With scratches deep into the wood, this story we could not refute.
We vowed that night to take a look, and find this place so dreary,
Up a twisted switch-back trail, we walked til we were weary."

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"We searched around and found a crack, and knew his tale was true,
Deep in the cave we hunted, and in a room or two,
Gargoyles everywhere, and a snowbeast, more than a few,
And at the back, deep in the cave.....""

Dewsong whispers: A frozen, Elven lad. Dewsong shows you a simple flute, with deep scratches embedded on the side. Dewsong sighs. Dewsong bows.

Shenney says, "Star" Shenney says, "One of the most talented Bardesses out there." Sephirin says, "I havn't seen Star in a long time." Shenney says, "Bawdy too" Shenney grins. Dewsong grins. Dewsong says, "aye, on all 3 counts..."

Dewsong says, "well, as chilly as that last one was, this next is fun..."

Dewsong says, "My oldest and dearest friend in the Realms, who would have been the best man at my wedding, at other things not interfered, is the truly wonderous poet, Mckatelee Starryskye" Shenney exclaims, "Kate!" Shenney sticks her tongue out at Dewsong. Dewsong grins at Shenney. Dewsong's performance continues.

Dewsong says, "always formal at the start..." Dewsong just tickled Shenney. Dewsong says, "anyway..." Shenney squirms. Dewsong chuckles.

Dewsong says, "For many years her voice filled bardic halls, and one of my greatest wishes in these lands is to hear it do so again. The closest I can come though is to honor her by performing two of her works, "

Dewsong says, "Mckatelee's repetoire of lyric was expansive, so in choosing pieces to perform tonight, I picked two extremely different selections... "

Dewsong says, "First, one of her happy songs, though she always performed it as a solo, Shenney Morynna and I are going to attempt it as a duet..."

Dewsong says, "Before we sing though, Shenney too would like to say a few words about this great bardess..." Dewsong grins at Shenney. Shenney laughs! Dewsong says, "hey, you told me to say that..." Dewsong gives Shenney a little prod between the shoulder blades. Dewsong chuckles.

Shenney says, "Well.. with Kate there's a lot of words to describe her. Brilliant, talented, funny.." Shenney says, "A great table dancer.." Shenney says, "Another member of my twisted large family" Shenney grins. Shenney says, "Definitely knew how to hold her liquor" Shenney says, "And could swing a sword with the best of 'em" Shenney smiles. Shenney says, "In all.. a true bard" Shenney says, "Fiery temper, kind heart" Shenney nods to Dewsong. Shenney asks, "I miss anything?" Dewsong says, "sexy wardrobe" Dewsong winks at Shenney. Shenney says, "Loved cats" Shenney grins at Dewsong. Dewsong nods. Shenney asks, "Shall we start the song then?" Dewsong says, "Shenney's voice fits the role of the bardess of the song much better than my own, and I'm delighted to present in this fashion, "The Goblin Song"" Shenney grins at Dewsong.

Shenney sings in a soprano voice:

"I was walking through the woods one day
Just a young bardess by myself,
When a gaggle of goblins attacked me,
At least 20 to one small elf!
They brought me to their village
Where I faced the goblin king,
    Who sentenced me to death
    Then demanded that I sing!"

Shenney gets a defiant expression on her face.

Dewsong says, "And the goblins sang:"

Dewsong chants in a tenor voice:

   "Sing, Bardess, sing!
    To us joy ye bring
In your voice is eternal spring
    O Sing, Bardess, sing!"

Dewsong glances thirstily at Shenney. Shenney gazes at Dewsong. (Shenney closes her eyes and her voice gives flight to an airy cadenza.)

Shenney sings in a soprano voice:

"And so I sang a song of joy
For there was no time for sorrow,
The King, he said, "Well done, my lass
    But ye still die tomorrow!"
But then, his queen, a frightful fiend,
Said, "I demand she dance for us!
Leap and twirl, spin and turn,
    Dance for us, she must!""

Dewsong chants in a tenor voice:

   "Dance, Bardess, dance!
    Assume thy proper stance
With grace and poise ye prance
    O Dance, Bardess, dance!"

Dewsong exclaims, "and show those legs!"

In one sinuous motion, Shenney arches her back and kicks high, then executes a little leap, landing catlike in a jingle of toe bells.

Shenney just tickled Dewsong. (Shenney begins to dance, her eyes closed as she focuses on a strain of music heard only by her before she continues to sing her tale.)

Shenney sings in a soprano voice:

"And so I pirouetted, leaped and plie'ed
And when at last my dance was done,
The goblin crowd, it burst with cheer
But the king said, "Ye die with the rise of the sun."
But then, the gobs wanted to dance
    To a fastpaced, rhythmic beat
"Do play those bones of yours for us," they said,
"To hear you would be a treat!""

Dewsong puts his lute in his lute case.

Dewsong chants in a tenor voice:

   "Drum, Bardess, drum!
    As we dance and hum,
    Drunk on Goblin Rum
    O drum Bardess, drum!"

Dewsong gets some rosewood bones from inside his dusty rose pouch.

(Shenney takes out her black ironwood bones, lovingly caressing the star-bedecked surface as she taps out a rhythm that makes you want to tap your toes.)

With pulse-pounding power, Dewsong beats a rapid canto with powerful strokes.

Shenney sings in a soprano voice:

"And so I played a lively beat
Upon these faithful bones of mine
And the Gob King danced jig after jig
But said, "Ye will pay that fatal fine."
And yet then, they saw my flute
And wanted to hear an aire
"Play for us a song so sweet
As a fresh, ripe spring pear!""

Dewsong does a happy little dance!

Dewsong chants in a tenor voice:

   "Play, Bardess, play!
    Sweep our hearts away
    To the melody we sway
    O Play, Bardess, play!""

Dewsong puts his bones in his dusty rose pouch. Dewsong gets a rosewood flute from inside his dusty rose pouch.

(Shenney puts her bones away and brings her ashen flute to her lips, playing a quick, lilting run on it with deft fingers before continuing to sing.)

With a contained ferocity, a rapid melody floats from Dewsong's rosewood flute.

Shenney sings in a soprano voice:

"'So then I played a song so clear,
Full of stars and love and hope
Although the King's eyes filled with tears
He still said, "Ye get the rope."
"Ah, but look," his queen did gasp
"She has a fiddle and a bow
Please make her play once more for us
Before her death ye do bestow.""

Dewsong puts his flute in his dusty rose pouch.

Dewsong chants in a tenor voice:

   "Fiddle, Bardess, fiddle!
Please play for us a little
    And sing Hey, diddle diddle
    O Fiddle, Bardess, fiddle!""

Dewsong bounces around happily. Dewsong gets an ebony-edged rosewood violin with a carved ebony bridge and pegs from inside his instrument case. Dewsong gets a fiddle bow from inside his instrument case.

(Shenney replaces her flute with her flower-engraved violin and bow and wipes a bead of sweat from her forehead before tucking the instrument beneath her chin to play a familiar jig. )

As Dewsong picks out his rosewood violin, a rapid folk song flies through the air with a blazing glissando.

Shenney sings in a soprano voice:

"And so, with a flourish of my bow,
I fiddled so full of joy and glee
    And played with such vivacity
That at dawn's light what did I see?
    So exhausted from their frolicking,
The goblins collapsed all in a heap!
With my music to dance to,
    They'd danced themselves to sleep!"

Dewsong does a happy little dance! Dewsong falls over. Dewsong snores.

Shenney giggles. Dewsong drools.

(Shenney brings the violin back up beneath her chin and plays a quick lullaby.) Dewsong snorts, loudly. Dewsong snores.

Shenney wryly asks, "Now why didn't I just balm them in the first place?" Shenney smiles sheepishly and shrugs.

Shenney sings in a soprano voice:

"And so, with haste did I escape
From that Goblin King and his wife
And from that ordeal this lesson I learned:
    A fiddle's mightier than a knife!"

Dewsong mutters into the air something about being a silly bardess, that's why..... Shenney just tickled Dewsong.

(Shenney raises her eyebrows impishly and whispers, "But wait, there's more....")

Shenney sings in a soprano voice:

"For later I found in my pocket a note
And this is what the Goblin King wrote:"

Dewsong rises to a kneeling position. Dewsong giggles.

(Shenney rummages in her traveler's pack to find a yellowed, tattered piece of parchment which she unfolds carefully.)

Dewsong stands up.

Dewsong's tenor joins with Shenney's soprano as she sings:

   "Laugh, Bardess, laugh,
For ye have joy to give
And so we let ye live
    Laugh, Bardess, laugh!"

(Shenney breathlessly beams at her audience and catches hold of Dewsong's hand to curtsy gracefully.)

Dewsong says, "This song is one of my personal favorites of Kate's works, and the memories I have of the times when we were having song circles before they were called song circles, just a few of us, or several, in the old Crossing guild, when she would sing this song, are some of my most cherished."

Dewsong says, "This is one of Mckatelee's greatest, but not quite so cheerful songs, in which she sung of perhaps the most important lesson anyone can learn."

Dewsong says, "This song is called, "If Only""

As Dewsong plinks his rosewood violin, a gentle lullaby drifts through the air with a sweet melodiousness.

Dewsong tiredly sings in a tenor voice:

"There once was a man who yearned to paint
To create with his hands the world in his mind
But he chose the worn path he was expected to take
And if you look at him now, you will fiind:
At the age of just 40, a weary old miller
All of his artistic spirit drained away
He looks down at his calloused, gnarled hands
"If only, if only," he seems to say..."

Dewsong plays a weary sounding work song on his violin, the chords trudging along with a somber heaviness.

Dewsong sadly sings in a tenor voice:

"There once was a lass with a hidden heart
She silently loved from afar a lad
But never spoke one word of her love
And always regretted what she could have had
And he, for his part, was in love with her
But didn't know she wanted him to stay
So they two are alone and lonely and old
"If only, if only" is all they can say...""

Dewsong twists the melody into a popular ballad about lost love. The haunting notes hang in the air.

Dewsong haggardly sings in a tenor voice:

"There once was a wench who worked in the inn
She'd look with envy on the roving bard
And daydream of singing for kings and queens
But always assumed it would be too hard.
So now, she's just an old bar maid
With old dreams of fame she'll never attain
With a pitcher of ale in each hand she sings
"If only, if only" is her constant refrain."

Dewsong plays a eerily familiar song before you realize it's a common drinking song, only in a minor key.

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"There's a moral to this story
There's a reason for this theme
Sieze the moment when it strikes you
    Try to realize each dream
For that dream, tis yer calling
And that dream tis never wrong
    Answer it, and "if only"
    Will be someone else's song."

You listen with appreciation as Dewsong plays a slow ballad with a subtle, powerful style. Dewsong finishes playing on his rosewood violin. Dewsong bows. Dewsong smiles. Dewsong says, "I really have always loved that song..." Dewsong smiles. Shenney nods. Shenney says, "Damn but I miss them" Shenney chuckles. Niteshiver exclaims, "Up wi' Bards!"

Dewsong casually observes the area. Dewsong leans back.

Dewsong says, "Now this next song will probably divide this excellent audiance into three groups..."

Dewsong says, "one group will be outrageously happy that I'm singing this song, the second will probably want to kill me for it.. "

Dewsong grins like an idiot. Dewsong says, "and all the younger folk here tonight just don't know what they're in for, as it's time for what has been called Elanthia's first campfire song"

Dewsong says, "That's right, Wyrdscope's evil classic, that absolutely must be sung by a group, so everyone that can should please sing with me..." Shenney exclaims, "eek!" Shenney places her hand over Dewsong's mouth. Khestryl lets out a loud "Huzzah!" Dewsong grins at Shenney. Sephirin laughs! Theelos says, "oh my" Theelos giggles. Sephirin snuggles up to Shenney. Khestryl does a happy little dance! Dewsong says, "yep, that's the one... "

Dewsong exclaims, "The Silly Kobold Song!" Shenney grins at Sephirin. Theelos giggles at Azareal. Khestryl cackles to herself! Niteshiver exclaims, "no!" Theelos gets a silver-edged short sword with a jade green hilt from inside his leather sheath.

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"A silly little Kobold in the first of Spring
Came near to me and begged to sing
She snuck around my shoulders and all around my head
And whispered in my ears, and here's the things she said:"

A chorus of voices join with Dewsong's leading tenor as he sings:

   "Oodinay oodinay oodelee oodelee ooo
    Oodinay oodinay I--Love--You"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"The next thing this Kobold did was sneak into my arms
She worked her little magic and she worked her little charms
She danced all around me and as she danced she sang
Her words flowed freely and this is how they came:"

A chorus of voices join with Dewsong's leading tenor as he sings:

   "Oodinay oodinay oodelee oodelee ooo
    Oodinay oodinay I--Love--You"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"Then my little darling, then my little pride
Hugged me very closely and pulled me to her side
She said she'd never leave me and when I asked her why
She shouted out those words again and this was her cry:"

A chorus of voices join with Dewsong's leading tenor as he sings:

   "Oodinay oodinay oodelee oodelee ooo
    Oodinay oodinay I--Love--You!"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"My silly little Kobold, when spring was finally gone
Left me in the forest, ending her song

But when again the snows melted and new grasses grew
I heard a little Kobold, and then I sang it too!"

A chorus of voices join with Dewsong's leading tenor as he sings:

   "Oodinay oodinay oodelee oodelee ooo
    Oodinay oodinay I--Love--You!"

Dewsong bows. Dewsong chortles softly at some secret joke. Dewsong says, "been a long time since that song was sung..." Dewsong chuckles. (Shenney echoes Dewsong's chorus, softly singing, "Oodinay oodinay I--Love--You.") Shenney hums cheerfully to herself. Niteshiver mutters into the air something about there's a reason. Sephirin grins at Shenney. Theelos applauds. Shenney scratches Dewsong's back. Dewsong smiles blissfully. Theelos dances a lively jig! Khestryl grins at Niteshiver. Shenney says, "I love it and I hate it" Shenney grins at Dewsong. Niteshiver applauds. Dewsong grins.

Dewsong gets a silverwillow picnic basket from inside his travel pack. Dewsong pulls a blue polka-dot cloth out of a picnic basket, setting his basket aside as he shakes out the cloth and lays it out upon the ground.

Dewsong says, "I would ask that before I sing the last song of the concert, that each of you get a drink of some sort."

Dewsong clears his throat. Dewsong says, "Even more than a night of song, this has been a night of remembrance."

Dewsong says, "I dedicate this last song to all the Old Bards, whatever realms they many be walking now."

Dewsong says, "This is my, "A Salute to Friends""

Dewsong tiredly sings in a tenor voice:

   "Sometimes, a drink
    Sometimes, a crowd
Sometimes it doesn't take much at all"

Dewsong slowly sings in a tenor voice:

   "To take me back,
To old friends I used to know
Times we swore we never would forget"

Dewsong quietly sings in a tenor voice:

"Every now and then I take a hard look around
    Surrounded by faces so new
Where are the ones I once knew?"

Dewsong casually observes the area.

Dewsong sadly sings in a tenor voice:

   "Old friends have fallen,
    New friends surely will
But the memories make them feel so alive"

Dewsong wistfully sings in a tenor voice:

"I am the man I am today
'Cause of all the friends along the way
I'll always keep them close inside"

Dewsong haggardly sings in a tenor voice:

"Way back when we never knew
That life would bring us here
But songs go on and stories must be told"

Dewsong longingly sings in a tenor voice:

"Tales of the laughter, and the tears
Of angry words and kisses no one knew
Hopes and dreams, and all our great fears"

Dewsong regretfully sings in a tenor voice:

"I don't know where they are tonight
Except for within that piece of
My heart they claimed long ago"

Dewsong emphatically sings in a tenor voice:

"I raise my glass to them,
    Here and so long away
    Dear friends, every one."

Dewsong waves a shot of Skullcrusher whiskey around. Dewsong takes a sip of his whiskey. Dewsong gasps and chokes as his face takes on a bright reddish hue! Dewsong takes a sip of his whiskey. Dewsong gasps and chokes as his face takes on a bright reddish hue! Dewsong smiles.

Dewsong says, "I'd like to thank you all again for coming tonight..."

Dewsong says, "Please give a hand once more for our performers, " Dewsong says, "Shenney, her family might not be as large as Sunnie's yet, but she's working on it..." Dewsong says, "Khestryl, this might have been her first time on the concert circuit, but with such talents and skills as they've shown tonight, it certainly won't be the last..." Dewsong says, "Oh, and be sure to tip them if you'd like, particularly since I can't afford to pay them..."

Dewsong says, "Myself and some others are going to be here for a while longer, singing, drinking, playing, drinking, all that fun bard stuff..." Dewsong says, "oh, and drinking" Sephirin says, "and drinking." Sephirin nods. Dewsong guzzles down some of his whiskey and then smacks his lips and wipes them with his sleeve. Dewsong gasps and chokes as his face takes on a bright reddish hue! Dewsong grins. Shenney says, "and more drinking" Shenney giggles. Sephirin guzzles down some of his rum and then smacks his lips and wipes them with his sleeve. Dewsong says, "And, of course, everyone is invited to join us" Shenney guzzles down some of her whiskey and then smacks her lips and wipes them with her sleeve. Shenney gasps and chokes as her face takes on a bright reddish hue! Khestryl takes a sip of her brandy.

Theelos chants:

   "Drink
       drink
          drink
              drink"

Dewsong points at Niteshiver. Dewsong says, "As soon as things quiet down a little, Niteshiver will lead us off on the singing side..." Dewsong grins at Niteshiver.

Dewsong says, "and thank you all again for coming, and making this such a successful event... "
