A type of chrysoberyl, alexandrite is a strongly pleochroic gem that exhibits emerald green, red, and orange-yellow colors depending on the viewing direction in certain types of light. Fine-quality alexandrite has a green to bluish-green color in daylight, changing to a red to purplish-red color in more yellow toned illumination. Some less-desirable stones may have daylight colors of yellowish-green or brownish red in yellow toned lighting.
