Serpentine are greenish, brownish, or spotted minerals commonly found in serpentinite rocks. It originates from metamorphic alterations. The name is thought to come from the greenish color being that of a serpent. Serpentine may refer to any of twenty varieties, but these varieties are not always easy to individualize and distinctions are not usually made.

Serpentine typically has an olive-green color, though can range from white to grey, yellow to green, and brown to black and is often splotchy or veined. It has a smooth or scaly appearance. Most are opaque to translucent with a lustre that can be vitreous, greasy, or silky. High grade serpentine is sometimes termed noble or precious, used as gems, and has be referred to as false jade.
