Tuesday Tidings - 47 - Numerical Toggle for Appraising Creatures · on 01/12/2021 18:43 1121
Happy Tuesday, everyone!

I chose the project this week, and Zadraes provided guidance on implementation.

As part of the ongoing project to help players make sense of stat scales by adding optional numerical toggles, we have expanded the existing TOGGLE APPRAISAL setting to cover use of APPRAISE on creatures. When this toggle is enabled, you will see a numerical scale alongside verbal descriptions.

Relative (±) scales show how the creature's attributes compare to your own. Your own skill is used as the baseline (0), with a +1 or -1 for each step harder or easier.

  • relative strength
  • relative agility
  • relative discipline
  • relative reflex
  • relative stamina
  • relative offensive difficulty
  • relative defensive difficulty

The remaining stats use X/Y scales, similar to the appraisal output for weapons and armor:

  • vitality
  • spirit (Empaths and Clerics only)
  • fatigue
  • wounds (severity)
  • weapon training
  • throwing weapon training
  • parry training
  • evasion training
  • shield training
  • magic training
  • debilitation training
  • tactics training

In some cases, the same verbal description is used for more than one numerical value. Rather than artificially condense the ± scale, we decided to let you see the some of the additional granularity.

As a reminder, each appraisal typically represents a range of values. Seeing that a creature is +1 level in strength over you does not mean it has 1 more point in strength than you have; rather, it just represents the next tier of messaging.

sample output:

>appraise viper careful
You are certain that the thicket viper is battered (7/10).
You are certain that the thicket viper has an incredible (6/6) spirit that is healthy (10/10).
You are certain that the thicket viper is tired (4/10).
You are certain that it is quite a bit (+11) stronger than you are.
You are certain that it is somewhat (+5) more agile than you are.
You are certain that it is about (-1) as disciplined as you are.
You are certain that it is not quite (-2) as quick to react as you are.
You are certain that it is significantly (-7) less conditioned than you are.
Taking stock of its offensive abilities, and defending with a firestained glaes buckler with a seven-pointed star boss and a scarlet glaes pasabas inlaid with Eth'ral'khh symbols, you are certain that the thicket viper is something that could tear you to shreds (+7).
Taking stock of its defensive abilities, and attacking with a scarlet glaes pasabas inlaid with Eth'ral'khh symbols, you are certain that the thicket viper is something you couldn't hope to hurt (+8).
If you attacked with a scarlet glaes pasabas inlaid with Eth'ral'khh symbols, you are certain that the enemy would train exceptionally well, but you probably won't be landing many blows (7/7).
If you threw the pasabas at the enemy you are certain that it would train exceptionally well, but you probably won't be landing many blows (7/7).
If you defended by parrying attacks, you are certain that the enemy would train quite badly (1/7).
If you defended by evading attacks, you are certain that the enemy would train exceptionally well (7/7).
If you defended by blocking attacks, you are certain that the enemy would train exceptionally well (7/7).
If you attempted to beguile the enemy with tactics, you are certain that it would train exceptionally well, but you probably won't be affecting it (7/7).
If you targeted and cast a spell at the enemy, you are certain that it would train exceptionally well, but you probably won't be landing many spells (7/7).
If you attempted to debilitate the enemy, you are certain that it would train quite badly (1/7).
