When you begin to carve an item, it remains the weight of the boulder/rock/whatever until you finish. This is to mimic how you are slowly carving the item out of the boulder, and it only really becomes free at the end. It is also mechanically easier to recalculate final weight, cost and other stats at the very end. I was able to assemble it when I tried, what room were you in and where did you buy the cord from? I may need to observe you having this problem to get to the root cause...
