In its natural form, it doesn't look like anything. It's the intangible substructure that binds the physical universe together.

Magically manipulated aether can, as noted, vary wildly. Shimmering color would probably be a good "default," but part of the theme behind Aether is to let Warrior Mages do simple illusions / color spells in many different ways.
