Plead Innocent/Guilty

Once you are facing a judge and you stand accused of a crime, you may attempt to PLEAD INNOCENT or PLEAD GUILTY. Your ability to convince a judge of your innocence depends on your Charisma and other mental stats to a lesser extent. If you fail the impress your innocence upon the judge, you will not only be charged a fine, but you will be charged a higher fine than you would have originally.

If you are not a risk taker seeking to clear your name, you may choose to PLEAD GUILTY to the crime. Not only will this move things more quickly, but your fine will be reduced slightly due to your ability to own up to your crimes.

The size of your fine is a large factor in your (PLEAD INNOCENT) success rate. Prior petty crimes are a slightly larger factor; in particular prior felonies. Necromancers with high Social Outrage are exceedingly unlikely to be found innocent. Remember, if you are found guilty after pleading innocent your fine will be increased much more than before.

Plead Release

Within the town of Crossing, if you are charged and found guilty of a petty crime, you may be sent to serve some time in the town's pillory. If this happens, you will be placed naked in the stocks at southwest corner of Town Green, just off one of the main streets in town. This option has no fine to pay, but you will be unable to do anything but speak for several minutes.

If you're feeling particularly lucky, you may attempt to PLEAD FOR RELEASE and a guard may take pity on you and let you go early. The success of this is based off of your the same stats as PLEAD INNOCENT. There is no consequence for failing this check.

While you are held in the stocks, other players may purchase rotten tomatoes or (if the weather permits) snowballs to throw at you while you are incapacitated.

Once your time has been served, a guard will enter the room, release you, and give you a sack that contains your belongings. You will be automatically dressed and if you had any special items, they will be located in the sack.

If you are charged a fine, one of two things will happen next: coins will be taken from your pocket to cover your fine or you will be told that you have a limited amount of time to pay your fine and recover your items.
