A single-stringed instrument, the psalmodicon consists of a long box which houses its chromatic fretboard. The fretboard itself contains up to twenty-five semitone positions allowing the single string to give off a variety of tonalities and notes. Depending on size, the psalmodicon may be played like a fiddle, or while seated with the instrument across the lap. The psalmodicon gained popularity in Dwarven culture because of its simplicity, ease of use and its peculiar metallic tone which is thought to have reminded Dwarves away from home of the sound a pickaxe makes when hitting ore.
A form of stamping tube, the alounoun is a specific form that sprang up from Dwarven culture reminiscent of the stamp-like dancing often found at Dwarven parties and galas. The alounloun is made of a hollow tube of wood or metal that has rings of the same material attached to the entire length of the instrument. The rings are loosely attached in groups, which are marked off by a copper band. The pattern of the rings determine the type of sound the tube makes when the alounloun is struck against the ground.
