General Information

Historically thrown weapons have long been a part of warfare, with some of early man's first complex technologies, like the atlatl, designed to improve the power and accuracy of thrown weapons. Within Dragonrealms, there are two classes of thrown weapons: light thrown and heavy thrown.

Both thrown categories offer more versatility than most weapon classes. Thrown weapons allow the user to differentiate between puncture, slice, and impact damage. While switching arrow types makes this true of crossbows and longbows as well, they do not offer quite the same versatility as thrown weapons. A user of heavy thrown can choose a spear for puncture damage or a hammer for impact damage.

Lacking some of the versatility of light thrown, heavy thrown makes up for this by being significantly more powerful. While not as powerful as bows and crossbows, thrown weapons do not need to be aimed. This is both a blessing (as it lowers roundtime between attacks) and a curse (as the option of receiving a large bonus to attack power and accuracy by aiming is not available). Like light thrown weapons, heavy thrown weapons are more suseptible to shield defense than bows. For reasons like these heavy thrown is not as popular as standard bows. Since it offers an appealing mix of heavy-hitting attacks and versatile damage types, however, it is by no means an uncommonly-used weapon skill.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

  • More powerful than light thrown
  • More damage versatility than bows, crossbows and slings
  • Less roundtime between attacks than bows and crossbows

Disadvantages

  • Inability to AIM means HT is more easily blocked by shield than other ranged weapons
  • Not as versatile as light thrown
  • Not as powerful as bows and crossbows
  • Inability to be forged means all dangerous heavy thrown weapons are rare, expensive Festival items

Guild-Specific Abilities

  • Warrior Mages have the ability to create one of the most powerful heavy thrown weapons in the game via the Frost Scythe spell. At maximum mana the scythe has wonderful damage potential.
