Empathy is the special skill of the Empath guild. No other guild may learn or use the Empathy skill.

History

Originally, the Empath's Guild did not have this skill, it was created in the late 1990's as Transference. When first released, it was a decaying skill, which meant ranks were actually lost the longer an Empath went without healing other people. This aspect of the skill was met with much protest, and was removed shortly after. Today, the skill has been renamed to reflect the Empath's expanded abilities to encompass more than healing.

Ways to Train Empathy

  • Empath Healing -- Taking wounds, poisons, diseases, and vitality from other characters is the most basic way to learn empathy and how most Empaths learn the bulk of their ranks early in their career. You will not learn any Empathy skill when you take wounds from another Empath.
  • Perceive Health -- Generally considered the easiest way to train since it does not require other player characters. It is not as easy to train at lower circles as other methods, however. If there are too many people within range when you do this, you can be stunned. This stun will give you internal head and nerve wounds.
  • STUDYing Anatomy Charts.
  • Removal of a Parasite - You can learn Empathy pretty well from tending off any of the blood creatures (worms in the croc maze, sand leeches in the Muspar'i pit, etc.). As an Empath, you will also learn a fair amount of First Aid and a small amount of Animal Lore from this. In exchange for not learning Empathy, everyone else learns Skinning.
  • Manipulate Creatures - You can learn a small amount of empathy from manipulating a creature.
  • Shifting - You can learn a small to fair amount of Empathy from a sucessful SHIFT on another character depending on the difficulty of the modification. Shift as of June 2010 appears to have been boosted significantly where the shifter will get an empathy experience pulse after the shift is completed and throughout the downtime from the cooldown.
  • Empathy class -- The student Empath must first successfully link to the teacher Empath in the Empathy skill. Then the teacher Empath can start the class, assuming of course that the teacher does in fact know more Empathy. Because a link is required, there can only be one student in each Empathy skill class at one time.
  • Link - Not ideal for training, but you do pulse a small amount of Empathy while you have a LINK open.
