A variety of chalcedony, onyx is a parallel banded mineral with layered chalcedony similar to agate. The colors of its bands range from black to almost every color, though common specimens contain black and/or white bands.

Onyx as a descriptive term has been applied to parallel banded varieties of alabaster, marble, calcite, obsidian, and opal, and misleadingly to materials with contorted banding such as cave onyx.

Onyx is birthstone of those born in the month of Shorka the Cobra, is traditionally held to protect against the effects of poison, though few are willing to swear to its efficacy in modern times.
