Diamond is a solid form of carbon that is extremely rigid and may only be contaminated by a few types of impurities such as nitrogen, boron, and hydrogen. A diamond's color originates from these defects.
By far, the most common impurity is nitrogen, which is responsible for yellow and brown coloration. Boron is responsible for blues and irradiation will cause a diamond to appear green. Deformations in the diamond's crystal lattice can cause browns, pink, and red. Black diamonds are not truly black, but rather contain numerous dark inclusions that give the gems a dark appearance. Any pure or nearly pure diamond is transparent and colorless.
Typically, diamonds are yellow, brown, grey, or colorless, but can be found less often as blue, green, black, translucent white, pink, violet, orange, purple, and red.
