Now, type perceive or power. This will give you the amount of mana available in the room and get your attunement skill moving. If you took ethereal shield, as I suggested earlier, type prepare ethereal shield 1, or the shortened version pre es 1. This will get your elemental magic skill and warding skill moving. Try not to cast spells too high at first. It will likely backfire and cause nerve damage. The more severe the nerve damage, the more it’s going to affect everything you do. This includes casting spells and handling weapons. Two of the main things a Warrior Mage relies on. At first circle I wouldn’t try casting beyond 5 mana until you get some ranks in those skills.

Let’s go to the bazaar. If you don’t know how to get there, type dir bazaar. It will give directions from the Warrior Mage guild to the bazaar. Once you get to the bazaar, you’re going to see a lady named Mags. Mags buys firewood. Type forage stick until you get a stick in your hand, then, with the stick in your right hand, type give Mags. Mags will give you some copper for your stick. Foraging trains outdoorsmanship and perception. Two of your survival skills. Mags also buys branches which pay a bit more than the sticks, but you won’t be able to forage them right away. When you get a few ranks in outdoorsmanship, you can forage grass, then braid my grass. When you see that the grass will make a quality piece of bundling rope, pull my grass. This will train engineering and appraisal. Which are two of your lore skills. Also, don’t buy bundling rope. You can make it for free. You can also go to the tannery and ask around and get a free piece of bundling rope. Okay, once you’re done selling firewood to Mags, go to the bank and withdraw your coins. We’re going to go to Tembeg’s Armory and buy a shield. You probably won’t need to buy armor just yet, unless you really want to. Your character likely already has some armor on them from character creation. If you appraised your gear earlier, you’ll have probably noticed that you’re wearing a leather jerkin or something similar. This is armor. You will also have a weapon, and as a warrior mage, you can summon a weapon. This is a walk through to help get some of your skills training. So, I’m not going to go over a lot of equipment here. Now, once you get to the armory, look on the hooks. You should see a target shield, an oval shield, a kite shield, and a tower shield. I would start with the target or oval shield. Wait until you get some ranks in shield usage, and build up some strength and stamina, before you try the heavier shields. Honestly, you don’t actually have to buy a shield either, but it is one of your characters’ three defenses. Which are evasion, parry, and shield. Evasion is a survival skill and tertiary for us. Shield is an armor skill and also tertiary for us. This means we learn these slower than anything else. Parry, however, is a weapon skill and secondary for us. We learn this faster than survival or armor. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t train the other two. It just means we learn them slower. Type get <item> example: get target shield. This will bring a sales attendant over and they will confirm what you’re trying to buy and how much it is. Then, buy <item>. I always do this to make sure I’m buying the item I want. If you just do something like type buy shirt, then you can wind up with something you don’t want. Knowing my luck, I’d wind up with the cloth shirt when I was trying to buy the scale shirt. So, check first. Once you buy your shield, type wear my shield. Always put my in front of something. Otherwise, it might try to default to something else in the room. Now, go back to the bank and deposit your coins. Now, we’re going to go to the shipyard and fight some ship rats. From the bank go southwest, go bridge, go southwest again. Remove your shield, get your weapon, or summon a weapon. Go gate, now you’re in the shipyard. Here there be rats! Walk around the shipyard. Check the power levels in the area. When a ship rat engages you, prepare a spell. Example: pre fs 2 (This prepares fire shards), target (this will target the one you are facing by default. You can also target first rat, second rat, and so on.), wait for the message that says that you think you’re ready to cast. (That’s not the exact wording, but it will be something like that.) If you cast before this, chances are the spell will backfire. When the spell is ready type cast. You’ve cast your first targeted spell! This will get targeted magic moving. To use a weapon. Now, I usually like to circle and bob. This trains tactics. Sometimes, I go with a circle, bob, and kick. This trains tactics and some brawling. I do this until I see <You’re incredibly balanced and overwhelming your opponent>. With a weapon, you can type analyze <critter name here> Example: analyze rat, this will give you an analysis of the creature you’re fighting and tell you your next few moves. Me, personally, with a bladed weapon, I like to feint, jab, draw, slice, thrust, chop, lunge, sweep. There are round times between those commands, and it will vary depending on the weapon and your skill with that weapon. Keep an on your fatigue, if you get too tired, you will fall down. You don’t want that. If you’re tired cast a spell, go back to circle and bob. These don’t use up fatigue. With a blunt weapon, I like to feint, jab, draw, bash, thrust, slam, lunge, sweep. This is just my preference. You don’t have to do it this way. Experiment a little see what works best for you. The main thing is that you want to keep your balance up. With good balance, the easier it is for you to hit your enemy and the harder it is for them to hit you. Once, you’ve killed the rat, wear your shield and with a bladed weapon in hand, type skin. This will skin the rat and train skinning. Another survival skill. If you have bundling rope, with the rope in one hand and the animal part in the other type bundle, then, wear my bundle. Now, when you skin, it will automatically bundle it for you. You can try to retreat out of combat to do this, but by the time you get it done, they will probably be back on you. Or you can put your items in a container and wait until you’re out of combat to bundle. You can sell your bundles at the tannery. Another good one to fight at first circle is sleezy louts outside the east gate in The Crossing. They drop coins and boxes and such. To open the boxes, you will need to disarm them first, then with a lockpick, pick <box name>. This works locksmithing.

Now, on to some more training. There are a lot of puzzles, quests, and battles to go on, and a lot of role play. Most importantly, this is your character. Build your character the way you see them. Since you’re new to the game, I highly recommend that you talk to a mentor. They are a wealth of information. I’m including a link to some of my warrior mage characters. Sylvanose, Ambrus, and Wylon. I’ve included their stats and skills, so you can compare them if you like.

Many of the races are good to join the guild straight out of character creation, but there are several who may need to train certain attributes before joining. Each race has their advantages and disadvantages to attributes and training them. Humans are straight 10s across the board with no bonuses or penalties to training. So, humans won’t have a problem joining the guild right away. However, I usually like to train my attributes first. Some races such as gnomes or halflings will have to do some attribute training first. You can check out the attributes page for more information on racial attributes as well as a more in depth description of what each of the attributes do. Training your attributes uses Time Development Points(TDPs). You get these by advancing to the next circle (leveling up) and by training your skills. The more skills you train the more TDPs you get. I like to train before I join. I generally even my attributes out and try to put a little extra on one or two if I can. To get to the places to train your attributes just type DIR<Attribute name> (EX: dir strength). This will give you directions to the training locations. Don’t worry about having money on you when you train. It will train you and add the cost to your debt to the province. You can pay this back later. I usually just pay it off a little at a time until the debt is clear. It’s no big deal really. No one is going to drag you off before the judge and demand you pay it back in full. As I said before, I like to even my attributes out to start with. I made a first circle Warrior Mage to give you an idea of what yours might look like. His name is Sylvanose. Click on the name and you can see his stats and skills at first circle. I also listed his starting spell. You can do yours however you like. He's just an example.Joining the Guild: Finally! Now that you have your attributes in order it’s time to join the guild. You guessed it! Once you get through the speech, ask Gauthus about magic. This will bring up a list of what spells are available to you. You will start off with three spell slots. You will need a targeted magic spell such as fire shards, or gar zeng. Targeted magic is a magic skill. There are a total of ten skills that are available to Warrior Mages. We are a magic primary guild, so you want to train as many of them as you can. (I suggest all of them) The other skills that are trained by casting spells are warding, augmentation, debilitation, and utility. For instance, ethereal shield is a warding spell, sure footing is an augmentation spell, arc light is a debilitation spell, zephyr is a utility spell. You’re going to want each one of these types of spells. Not necessarily those exact spells. This is your character so build your character the way you see them. Go to the Warrior Mage page in Elanthipedia and look at the spells. You can click on them, and it will bring up a description. Each of the target spells do different kinds of damage. This may not be very important early on, but it can become very important later. Such as, going into fire sprites and all you have is fire spells. Then, you find out the hard way that fire sprites are immune to fire. So, pick your spells wisely, and keep in mind that you will gain circles fairly quickly early on. To start off with, at first circle, I would go with a targeted spell, a warding spell (Ethereal Shield is the most useful at this point. Also you need it to get elementalism), an augmentation, or utility. At second circle, I would pick an augmentation or utility spell (whichever you didn’t take at first circle). Then, at third circle I’d take a debilitation spell. Don’t spend anymore spell slots until 8th circle. I know it’s a lot to ask, but trust me, you’re going to want to do this. At 8th circle you can get a free spell called elementalism. This opens up your metamagic which determines how you summon weapons. Yes we can summon weapons. I’ll get more into that in a moment. There are six of these. Two of them take two spell slots. You want expansive infusions. This allows you to summon every melee weapon type available, except brawling type weapons, bows, crossbows, and slings. It will take 8 spell slots to get them all, but you can get the ones you think you’ll like best. Read about them, then pick your favorite flavor.

The extra spell slots come from your account status. Whether you're free, basic, or premium. I'm a platinum subscriber, so I get 2 extra spell slots. Basic subscribers get 1 bonus spell slot, and premium subscribers get 2. So, if you're not a premium account holder, then you will need to adjust the spell progression accordingly.)</ins> You will need a targeted magic spell such as fire shards, or gar zeng. So, go outside. You may have to pick yourself up off of the floor if you haven’t done so already. Once outside, type align <element type>. This will align you to an element. Example: align fire will align your character to fire. Align air to air and so forth. When you align to an element, you will be placed in opposition to another element. If I’m aligned to fire, then I’m placed in opposition to water. This does not diminish your ability to cast water spells. When you cast a spell from an opposing element, you will lose elemental charge. When you cast from an element you are aligned to, you will gain elemental charge. So, align to an element, then type summon admittance. This will sit you down and you will meditate drawing yourself closer to your aligned plane. This is how you get elemental charges. It will start working your summoning skill. You’ll get a round time. Wait for the round time to end. You’ll get a message that says that you can take a bigger charge. Do it again. Keep doing it until it tells you that you can’t take anymore. By this time, you will have mind locked summoning. Type exp, you should see something like this if it’s mind locked: Summoning: 118 53.20% mind lock (34/34).

Now, on to some more training. With a blunt weapon, I like to feint, jab, draw, bash, slam, sweep.

With a blunt weapon, I like to feint, jab, draw, bash, slam, sweep.

There will be, from left to right, a hand with an L in it, a hand with an R in it, and a hand with fingers bent and crossed. The ones with the L and R will display what you’re holding in that hand. The one with the bent and crossed fingers is what spell you are currently preparing. To the bottom left of that is a little blue button. It kind of looks like a sapphire with an arrow in it. This opens and closes your left side panel. There’s one on the far right side as well just below the default drop down menu and options. If your side panels are not opened, go ahead and open those up. They are going to come in handy. In the left panel, there is a window labeled windows. Scroll down to the bottom of the list and click on the little eyeball next to room. This opens and hides your room look description. I keep this open on top of my story window. This way I don’t have to keep typing look every time I want to see who or what is in the room. In the story window your room description is going to disappear due to scroll from activity. Either from you doing something or someone else doing something. If something is on the floor, it will be in this description. The same if someone comes into the room. You’ll be able to see who is in the room with you here. Now, in the left panel, I have a death window open. This way if someone gets struck down, it’s going to show up here. If a group of people get struck going it will go to the death window instead of scrolling up your screen while in the middle of doing something. Below that, I have active spells. This shows any spells that you have going and how much time is left on them. This way you don’t have to perceive every few minutes to see if your spell is about to run out. Below that, I have a group window open. If you’re grouped with someone, their name will show up here. On the right panel I have an encumbrance window open. This one is just a slider that shows about how much you’re carrying. You can also type encumbrance and it will tell you if you’re burdened or not. Typing info will also show you your encumbrance also along with a bunch of other information about your character. Below that, I have a friends and enemies window open. This displays anyone on my friends list. To put someone on your friends list type befriend and it will tell you how to add someone to the list. Below my friends list is the thoughts window. If you’re wearing a gwethdesuan, you can communicate with other characters in another room. Chatter will also show up here. Then, below that one, I have field experience. This is just the way I have mine set up. Feel free to experiment with it to see what works best for you. Right click on a window and click settings and you can change font size and color to suit your tastes. Now, click options, then highlights. Here, you can change the preset highlights. I just leave these alone. For me, they’re fine just the way they are. Under the custom highlights tab, you can add anything you want highlighted. Like, coin or coins, chest, coffer. You feel fully prepared to cast your spell. Highlights are a good way to track what is going on in heavy scroll like when you’re swamped in combat. When a lot is going on, and things are moving fast, you don’t have time to read every work. Highlighting key words and phrases is very helpful. There are other front ends available. Check around. Ask other players what their favorites are. Next! Go to the bank. Why? Because, there are thieves in the game. Although, they can’t steal from your right now, they can later on so you might as well find out where to stash your coins early on and make a habit of it. Type DIR BANK, and follow the directions to the bank. Once you’re in the bank, you can go booth to exchange your coins to the different currencies. There’s Kronars, Lirums, and Dokoras. Each province has its own currency. Go window to deposit all of your coins.

Type dir warrior mage. Actually, you’re going to go out the Northeast Gate, go southeast and follow your nose until you can’t go anymore, then go door, go arch. The guild leader, Gauthus, will be there. He’ll grunt and grumble at you. Grudgingly ask if you plan to join. Maybe, call you some names. I don’t know. I don’t remember it all. Type join twice to join the guild. (Read what Gauthus has to say. It’s fun.).
