To improve your skill you need to play a challenging song on your instrument. You will get the most training when playing with a "slightest hint of difficulty". This means the song is just above your level and ideal for practice. If you "fumble" the song, it is too hard. If you play the song "master"fully, it is below your level. As a point of reference, by a little over 400 ranks in Performance you'll be able to play a gavotte on the easiest instruments (such as a lyre), but only a wedding march on harder instruments (such as bagpipes or harp).
