When {{PRel|Kigot}} wrote the {{PRel|Philosophy of the Knife}}, he picked the knife as a metaphor for the moral life of a {{PRel|Necromancer}} precisely because it was such a common tool of the trade.<br />
<br />
All {{PRel|Thanatology}} involves carving up the target in some capacity. Cutting occult symbols into the body is the method that the thanatological link is created and nobody claims to know a way to get around that. Theoretically it doesn't need to strictly be "a knife," as long as it's some kind of instrument consecrated to the task, but it's hard to find a better mix of functionality and discretion for the job.<br />
