			There are many kinds of silence.

			Some are gentle. Some are reverent. Some are only the silence of others deciding that what they think of you is better kept behind their teeth.

			There is a particular kind of attention that settles around a person once others decide they have understood her.

			I know well enough what some make of me. A priestess who keeps her devotion without apology. A woman who loves openly where others would prefer silence. One who has made judgment felt, and did not tremble afterward.

			They may think as they please. I have no interest in arranging myself into something easier for them to bear.

			I have no patience left for the false purity of those who would rather admire decay from a safe distance than admit they live within it. My devotion does not rest in what is pretty, nor in what allows others to feel clean. What I feel, when I turn my heart toward Ushnish, is the desire to serve. Not to decorate truth. Not to soften it. To serve it faithfully.

			And because that longing for service lives in me, I cannot pretend I do not see sacred purpose in places others would rather name only abomination.

			Necromancers are dangerous. I know that well enough. I am no fool, and devotion has not made me blind. Yet I cannot easily make myself into an eager destroyer of those who move so near the boundaries of decay. There are some who would call that weakness. They are welcome to do so, though not, it seems, within my hearing.
