WYNDER: /* Requirements */

spoilers
Given by: Father Karjon in the church of Tiger Clan

The original version of this walkthrough was put together by Renkxil and reformatted by Dasffion. It was copied to Elanthipedia from the now shuttered DRSecrets website.

Requirements
To obtain this spell you need the following:
* 30 Charisma
* 35 Discipline
* Holy oil
* a feather from the Crossing cleric shop
* 13 altar candles and a way to light them
* holy water
* a decent amount of devotion

Recommendations
You need to be able to hit the bony fylgja. In general, this requires at least a 24 mana cast of Harm Horde or 45 mana cast of Harm Evil with a minimum of 35 discipline. After reading the tome (step 3), you will be randomly ambushed by bony fylgja. If you can kill them outside the void, then you will be fine on the quest. If you can't kill them, find someone to teach you Targeted Magic and guard you while you work on the below. Here are some things you can do to improve your chances of hitting:

* Have a 270 minimum average of Holy Magic and Targeted Magic
* Pick up the Targeted Mastery magical feat
* Align to a god to get a Targeted Magic bonus
* Use Time of the Red Spiral to boost your Harm Evil or Harm Horde spells
* Get a Moon Mage prediction on Targeted Magic and/or Holy Magic
* Adjust your SPELLS STANCE 100 70 130

Other recommendations for the quest include:

* Using Major Physical Protection and Shield of Light with an evasion/shield stance give you the best chance to avoid being hit
* Cast Protection from Evil and Minor Physical Protection just in case you are hit
* Cast Persistence of Mana before entering the void to help with mana-intensive casting
* OM will discharge when going through the portal, so don't rely on it for POM, or other spells.

Walkthrough
# Talk to Father Karjon in the 4a. He's hard to miss. ASK Karjon about Murrula's Flames and he'll give you a key.
# Head down to the dark spirits (use Divine Radiance as a light source), and you'll find a room that has a pile of rotting timbers in it. Look for the pile that looks "oddly different". Push on the timbers until the trap door appears. UNLOCK it with the key, OPEN and GO trap door.
# Open tome and then READ the tome. Turn tome to change pages and continue reading until the end. There is heavy RT here, but the area is safe.
# Head to the death spirit area in the 60 north of Leth Deriel. You may enter through Silverclaw Hub at any time of day. Begin to SAY Findylis in every room of the death spirit area.
# Findylis will take you to her tree and talk to you for awhile then ask you to kill and raise a dryad.
# Get your holy oil and your feather then head back to the blood dryad and nyad spot. Kill a dryad, cast soul bonding on it, DIP feather in holy oil, MARK dryad with feather and then raise it. If your devotion level is too low, you won't be able to complete this step.
#*MAKE SURE YOU SOUL BOND THE DRYAD. If you don't it'll raise a corrupted dryad that will kill you.
# Head back to the same spot and say Findylis again. Here, she will give you a speech, and then ask you to climb her tree and "Master the Echos."
# Climb the tree and LISTEN. Various random musics will start to echo. Each time a type of music plays, it will be a favored type of an aspect of Faenella. Idon (heron), is all drums and percussions. Faenella (wren) is all harps and stringed instruments. Murrula (phoenix) is all flutes and woodwinds. TOUCH the figures who correspond to the music. After you touch the figures enough times correctly a long sequence will begin, and you will receive an egg.
#*You only need to listen once, even if prompted to listen again later.
#*Wait until an egg appears on the altar and pick it up.
# Go down and talk to Findylis again. She will tell you to have the immortals cast their benevolent gaze down upon you, etc. Head to the Crossing Temple.
# The rest of this sequence must be completed in a timed window, or your phoenix will turn back into an egg and you will have to restart at this point. Make sure you have six uninterrupted hours of time on hand.
# Buy thirteen is from a cleric shop or the cart-monk on the temple grounds. Head up to the Eyes of the Thirteen and put a lit candle in each of the candlestick next to each of the Thirteen's altars. Once they're all lit hurry down to the 2 and put your egg on it. If all the candles are still lit, the egg will "hatch" a statue of a phoenix.
# Clean the phoenix with some holy water. It should read something about the starry road. This means, its off to the 31a swamp again!
#*Apparently if you do not clean the phoenix at the altar it won't message, but you will be able to complete the quest so long as the phoenix is clean.
# Go to the greater Zaulfung swamp and go to the area on Ranik's map marked "Beak" and climb it.
#*If your climbing skill is lacking, ask a Ranger to cast Athleticism upon you. 150 Athletics was enough to not need the buff.
# Go all the way down, go all the way north, and climb the crevice. Go up, and climb the spire (rm93-genie). When you get to the top PUT phoenix in spire. After a short sequence a portal will open. Get the phoenix from the spire and go through the portal.
#*Once you enter you will not be able to use any of your inventory. Cast Persistence of Mana before entering the void.
# Now, you're back in the void. Thirteen total bony fylgja will spawn each holding a carving for a triptych; kill the bony fylgjas and get the carving that they drop. Affix the carving to the triptych of where that aspect of the god is missing (map with god grouping hints: https://imgur.com/a/nBfxYyZ). For example, if a shark drops, put it on the triptych with the albatross and dolphin, and so on. See the recommendations above for Targeted/Holy Magic and spell cast mana requirements. Suffice to say, if you have the minimum recommended requirements it will take hours to kill them all.
#*You will be naked while in the void, so it is necessary to constantly RETREAT when you are engaged. Shield/Evasion stance with Shield of Light, Protection from Evil, and Minor Physical Protection will help prevent from being one-shot if you do get hit. The safest approach is to not let anything get to melee range. It is rumored to require 500 evasion to avoid getting hit without retreating.
#*There are random stuns in this area that may drag you off to another room or knock you to the ground. BE CAREFUL!
#*RECOMMENDATION: If you have Harm Horde, try to group up multiple bony fylgja in one room and kill them together to save time.
# Once you place all the triptychs, a nebulous rift will open randomly. Go into the nebulous rift.
#*The rift jumps around the area. If you are having trouble finding it stand in the center room and wait for it to come to you.
# A long sequence will happen. Go to the lake, put the phoenix on the monolith, and study it. It will take a while, but keep going. Once you do that, another long sequence, you'll die, and be reborn. Congratulations, the spell is yours.
#*You will use one favor whenever Murrula's Flames triggers, including this first time.

Snipe

WYNDER: /* Learning Snipe (as a guild association is::Thief) */

RTOC
Snipe is the ability to use a ranged weapon (bow, crossbow, sling, TM) from hiding and remain in hiding after the shot.

Requirements
This page type is::ability is restricted to Survival-prime guilds (guild association is::Ranger, guild association is::Thief and guild association is::Necromancer) of at least 40th circle.
*Thieves and Rangers can make use of this ability with aimable missile weapons (Bow, Crossbow, and Sling).
*Rangers and Thieves may combine this ability with dual load to snipe a single target with two arrows simultaneously. Both shots will be calculated against the perception of the target, and thus have a chance of pulling you from hiding.
*Necromancers use a Targeted Magic spell that allows them to effectively snipe with magic.

Snipe Mechanics
Snipe uses Stealth, the appropriate weapon skill, and the guild-only skill (Backstab, Scouting, or Thanatology) as a modifier vs. the target's Perception and defenses.

If you pass the Perception check you will stay in hiding and get an accuracy bonus to your attack. If you fail the Perception check your attack will be a normal attack, and you will be pulled out of hiding.

* When a Thief, or Ranger, snipes successfully no one in the room, including the target, will see the name of the attacker.
* A successful snipe for a Necromancer will show the name of the attacker to the target only, but the room will not see who made the attack.

When using Snipe with only Invisibility you will be revealed regardless if you win or lose the Perception contest. If you are hiding, and have Invisibility up, you will stay in hiding with a successful Snipe, but you will still be revealed to the target, and room, by your Invisibility breaking.

Learning Snipe (as a guild association is::Ranger)
> ask tolle about snipe<br>
Tolle says, "So, you want to learn the whistling kill?"<br>
Tolle chuckles.<br>
Tolle leans over and begins to speak softly to you, "I call it that because if done right, the only thing the prey will see... or should I say hear, is the whistle of your arrow. I'll teach it to you but you need to heed my warnings."<br>
Tolle explains, "First, do not use this skill near a town or city, we have an image to uphold. Don't ask me what that image is, I just know it is not one of murderers."<br>
Tolle says, "Second, the ability is very difficult to use. It takes a mastery of a lot of different skills to use efficiently."<br>
Tolle asks, "Third... Hey, you listening?"<br>
Tolle glares at you.<br>
Tolle continues, "Finally, the way I teach you this skill is different from the way another guild might teach its members."<br>
Tolle winks at you.<br>
Tolle says, "I will show you how to harness the power of the wilderness around you, how to focus and become one with nature. So, know that you would be a fool to think you can apply my teachings to an urban setting. I hardly ever use the ability least of all within the walls of a city."<br>
Tolle leans over and begins whispering in your ear the basics of sniping. <br>
Tolle's words begin to sink in and you feel you are ready to begin trying out this new ability.<br>

Learning Snipe (as a guild association is::Thief)
> ask kalag about magic<br>
As you approach, Kalag the Sly reaches under his desk and pulls forth a small crossbow, placing it on the desk in front of him.
"A deadly weapon in its own right, wouldn't you say? However, in true Thief style, its worth is more in the possibilities it affords, rather than its mere construction. You've always known how to deliver a backstab to your foes, but to deliver death unseen from afar is a much more difficult task. The principles are much the same, however. Let me open your eyes into a wider world of stealth."
The silver S'Kra patiently instructs you on how to fire bows and crossbows without revealing your position. At the end though, he gives you a piercing stare. "Do NOT misuse this ability against other adventurers. If I hear that you have, I will carve the knowledge right out of your skull. Understand? Good. Now go practice," Kalag the Sly smiles.

Snipe Policy
THIS POLICY ONLY APPLIES RANGERS AND THIEVES.

SNIPE is a zero tolerance ability. If you abuse it, you will lose it.

If the SNIPE ability is used in any UNCONSENTED (or even CONSENTED, per a GM ruling) attack on another player, that is an abuse of the ability. First offense abuse will result in 30 days suspension of the ability. A second abuse will result in permanent (irreversible, non-negotiable) removal of the ability. There will be no appeals. There will be no third offenses.

Use of SNIPE is always subject to GM intervention, regardless of whether or not a player filed REPORT or request for intervention exists. You should therefore always be prepared to provide reliable proof of CONSENT if you are using SNIPE.

If you are attacked, you are operating under implied consent and may use SNIPE to defend yourself. If you are involved in a CHALLENGE or other type of mutually agreed upon spar, then SNIPE may be used when both parties have agreed to it.

Example messaging
Success

Learning Snipe (as a guild association is::Thief)
> ask kalag about magic

Success
You remain concealed by your surroundings, convinced that your moving to fire went unobserved. <br>

Failure
The bristle-backed peccary notices your attempt to remain hidden while firing your hunter's longbow! <br>
The bristle-backed peccary discovers you, ruining your hiding place! <br>
Ventriloquism is the art of throwing one's voice onto nearby objects, people or critters. Bards and Thieves are both capable of learning techniques for throwing their voice. While Bards of sufficient skill can learn from teacher is::Malik in Shard, Thieves must be trained by a Bard. There are some differences between the voice throws available to members of each guild.
RTOC
Bard Voice Throws
1. Any items that the Bard is wearing or holding.
* THROW VOICE <item> <message>

2. Items in something you are wearing or holding.
* THROW VOICE <item> in <item> <message>.

3. Any items someone else is wearing or holding.
* THROW VOICE <item> on <person> <message>.
* THROW VOICE <NPC> <message>.
:NOTE: Abuse of this ability can lead to GM intervention in Prime or Plat!

The highest level of bardic voice throw requires approximately 40 Charisma and 300 ranks of performance.
:Update: In 3.0 this is now 42 charisma, 40 discipline, 310 performance.
*used to be vocals, now determined by performance skill

Requirements
* Learned ability # 1 at requires performance skill::180 performance, requires charisma::30 charisma.
note: I was able to do this with 179 ranks in performance, but not at 175. it seems the requirement is somewhere in between.
* Learned ability # 2 at requires performance skill::210 performance, requires charisma::34 charisma.
* Learned ability # 5 at requires performance skill::315 performance, requires charisma::42 charisma, requires discipline::40 discipline
note: I was able to learn this with 296 ranks performance, 41 charisma and 39 discipline (2017)

Drinks to have on hand: helmsman's ruin, bitterroot ale, starry road sherry
Thief Voice Throws
1. Throw your voice in different directions.
* THROW VOICE OUT <message>.

2. Objects lying around.
*Learned ability # 5 at circle 62
Teaching
A Bard may teach any of these techniques to a Thief of sufficient circle. The Bard must have at least 30 Charisma in order to teach any of these techniques.

To initiate a class:
*THROW VOICE LEARN <Bard>
*THROW VOICE TEACH <Thief>

Also:
*THROW VOICE REFUSE/DECLINE

It takes ~15 minutes to teach each technique and you teach them in sequential order. After the lesson is finished, the Bard must rest for ~15 minutes to absorb the lesson. This will teach a small amount of Teaching and Scholarship. Skill does not appear to affect class length. You cannot teach a class while teaching the throw voice lesson, or you must start again from the beginning.

*Bard able to Teach Thief first ability at 225 performance skill.
*Thief ability to learn is strictly based on circle, not skills or stats.

;Common Issues
* Issue: Bard is not paying attention to you.
:Fix: Bard needs to turn AVOID TEACH off.
Note: This system has not been converted to the new crafting mechanics.

Lockpick Carving is a Thief-only page type is::ability in which keyblanks are carved into lockpicks using a knife.

Syntax
(and after the first carve and for successive carves):
* Carve my lockpick with my knife

Skill factors
*Lockpick Repair is taught by the Crossing guild leader at 12th, as well as Lockpick Carving.
*There are three main factors that go into lockpick carving: Locksmithing skill, Agility, and the higher of Mechanical Lore skill or Engineering skill. Potentially Perception skill, Reflex, or other skills may play some small role in lockpick carving.
*Locksmithing skill and Agility factor into the quality level of the lockpick and Mechanical Lore skill factors into whether the lockpick snaps while it is being carved.
*Anything that boosts Lockpicking skill or Agility will result in a higher chance for a higher quality lockpick. There are many abilities, bonuses, and spells that effect these two factors and therefore a locksmith could potentially carve much higher than their natural ability.
Lockpick properties
Material properties
Keyblank materials can be classified on a scale of very soft to very hard. The properties change as the materials move from one end of the scale to the other.
*Soft materials will be easier to carve to a higher quality, though they cannot ever reach the top quality of Grandmaster's.
*Soft materials will snap more frequently in the carving process.
*Soft materials will bend and break more quickly when being used as a lockpick.

Common materials
*Ivory: Very Soft material
*Bronze: Moderately Soft material
*Copper: Moderately Hard material
*Iron: Hard material

Rare materials
*Soapstone: Very Soft Material
*Mother-of-Pearl: Soft Material
*Ironwood: Soft Material
*Silver-hued: Moderately Soft Material
*Gold-hued: Moderately Hard Material

Initialing and signing lockpicks
Only Grandmaster's lockpicks can be initialed or signed with the carver's full name. To do this simply attempt one more carve after the lockpick is completed. Ability to carve either initials or name is based on the same skills as the initial carving of the lockpick. If you have a lesser ability you will carve only initials, and if you have greater ability you may carve your full name. If you wait too long you will not be able to make the attempt.
Notes
Varsyth picks up an ivory keyblank from his desk and begins to whittle away at it with deft strokes. Before long, an exquisitely carved lockpick is held between several claws.
"Of course, anyone can do this, although we're the best. I'm sure you've seen this happen before, however?" With a twitch of his claws, the ivory keyblank bends slightly out of shape. "Don't throw it away just yet, some damage can be fixed."
With careful efforts, Varsyth unbends the lockpick until it looks good as new, then places it back down on his desk with a smile.

WYNDER: Updated level information, reordered and added missing rituals.

The rituals performed by a guild assocation is::Necromancer on corpses and corpse parts will be their primary source for learning the Thanatology.

So far, five have been mentioned.

Preserve (1st Circle)
The preservation ritual does basically what its name implies, preserves a corpse so that it will not decay at the accelerated rate species of Elanthia (that are not adventurers) seem to enjoy. A preparatory ritual for other things, the preservation ritual will make a dead body last much longer, or until skinned and searched. Utilization of this ritual requires/teaches some knowledge of first aid, and prevents the Consume Flesh and Harvest rituals.

Harvest (2nd Circle)
The harvesting ritual allows a Necromancer to carve a piece of a corpse out for personal use to some diabolical end at a later point. Doing this ruins any possibility that the corpse could be skinned, but perhaps the Necromancer achieves some higher benefit from it later. Utilization of this ritual requires/teaches some knowledge of skinning, and cannot be done if the corpse has been skinned.

Fetish (3rd Circle)
The only ritual that is not performed on a corpse, this blasphemous ritual imbues a necrotic item that the Necromancer is holding with the power of death. It is presently unknown what uses these fetishes hold, or how many variants there are. Initial observation suggests that the item must be properly set up beforehand, and this ritual is just the final touch.

Cut Hand (5th Circle)
Using your ritual knife, you cut your hand (non-damaging) to act as a component by spells in the Blood Magic book. Teaches a small amount of thanatology.

Consume Flesh (15th Circle)
Requires a corpse to be present (PC or NPC). To heal a part on yourself, the corpse must have its corresponding part not already destroyed. The ritual will destroy the corresponding part on the corpse while healing it on the necromancer. This is not actual consumption, but a magical effect.

Arise (20th Circle)
The most time-consuming ritual in the Necromancer's arsenal, the ritual to Arise is performed just before the sorcerous magic needed to imbue a corpse with false life is enacted. The corpse in question must have already been PRESERVEd.

Introduced to Elanthia on March 18th of 2001, prayer beads are a method by which a Cleric can gain Devotion while learning Mech Lore and Scholarship. In order to create a prayer bead, the Cleric will need a few items:

*A wood shaper
*A carving knife
*Holy water
*The Bless spell
*A prayer bead chain (optional)
*A prayer bead primer (optional, but must be used to learn scholarship.)

Supplies
Supplies can be purchased in Dirge, Riverhaven, Shard and several other locations. Below is a list of items available in Riverhaven:
Making the Block
Unless you have a great deal of money, you'll want to make your own block from which to start. First FORAGE LIMB at a place like outside of the Northeast Gate of Crossing -- if you have the Foraging skills, you may forage a limb of any wood; however, whether or not you'll be able to successfully carve the block will depend on your Mechanical Lore skill.

#SPRINKLE VIAL ON MY LIMB (of holy water)
#PREP BLESS, then CAST MY LIMB
#Draw your knife and CARVE MY LIMB WITH MY KNIFE
#Continue to CARVE MY LIMB WITH MY KNIFE until you have your block.
If you study your primer before carving the bead, you have the potential to learn scholarship from completing the bead, though it is option and makes the bead harder to complete if you don't read the primer. To make a bead, you may follow the below process:

#OPEN MY PRIMER
#STUDY MY PRIMER (On successful page study, continue to #3).
#TURN MY PRIMER
#Continue steps 2 and 3 until you've completed the primer.
#Get your block and wood shaper and SHAPE <block> TO <animal>
#Repeat until the block breaks or you complete your prayer bead.

Storing and Using Beads
Once the bead is complete you can PUT BEAD ON MY CHAIN with each chain holding 10 beads. Chains can be worn on the wrist.

When you've completed your bead, travel to consecrated ground -- the Crossing Chapel for instance -- and kneel. Remove the chain and type: MEDITATE MY CHAIN

The devotion gained from a bead when used is dependant upon the quality for its material type and its overall quality.
