Retan Dolomars are bizarre beasts inhabiting Hara&#039;jaal. They are occasionally hunted for their poison glands which are used to make thief poison. They seem to have slightly reduced evasion for their level while being very resistant to piercing and slashing damage, though not as pronounced as [[Seordhevor Kartais]]. Impact and high suited for strength weapons (katar, mattock, various axes) seem to work well. They have an engagement cap of 4. Soft cap on weapons becomes more severe as ranks approach 350.&lt;br /&gt;

Acid burns through head worn armor making it worthless also causing severe eye and skin injury.&lt;br /&gt;

Below about 50 ranks, shield is not a terribly effective defense.  However, shield coupled with the {{skill|evasion}} is the most effective means of defending against ranged attacks.  You will be unable to effectively use larger shields&#039; higher protection values until your ranks in Shield Usage increase.  There is a contest in shield that examines the stats used in your defense ({{stat|Reflex}}, {{stat|Discipline}}, {{stat|Strength}}) and compares that to the weight of the shield to see if you have full use of your ability to block. When working normally this &amp;quot;penalty&amp;quot; is truly a trivial thing and most likely only impacts very young characters. Most characters have no penalty whatsoever from the weight of shield. At low ranks in skill, small non-hindering shields are your best bet.  {{ilink|s|Target shield}}s from the [[Field Goblin|goblins]] west of the [[Crossing]] make a good starter shield.&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

An arm-worn shield will penalize shots fired by a longbow, short bow, or composite bow, as per the standard penalties for two-handed weapons.&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

As skill approaches 100 ranks, moving to medium-sized shields will begin to pay off.  Larger shields are generally more hindering, but with more skill in shield your defense will improve at an increased rate compared to the shield&#039;s maximum appraised protection.  Shield defense will increase at a slower pace after the maximum appraised protection has been reached.&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Experience is now awarded to all skills you are stanced to use, regardless of whether or not that skill is actually contested. It may still be in your better interest to swap stances around a little, but the need to stance down dramatically (especially in evasion) should not be as common or necessary.&lt;br /&gt;

==Arm-worn Shield Notes==&lt;br /&gt;
The {{com|ADJUST}} verb changes any shield to allow wearing on the arm.  Adjusting it again will revert it to shoulder-worn.&lt;br /&gt;

The maximum size of shield you can wear on your arm is based on your guild&#039;s facility with {{catskill|armor}}:&lt;br /&gt;

Below about 50 ranks, shield is not a terribly effective defense.  However, shield coupled with the {{skill|evasion}} is the most effective means of defending against ranged attacks.  You will be unable to effectively use larger shields&#039; higher protection values until your ranks in Shield Usage increase.  There is a contest in shield that examines the stats used in your defense ({{stat|Reflex}}, {{stat|Discipline}}, {{stat|Strength}}) and compares that to the weight of the shield to see if you have full use of your ability to block. When working normally this &amp;quot;penalty&amp;quot; is truly a trivial thing and most likely only impacts very young characters. Most characters have no penalty whatsoever from the weight of shield. At low ranks in skill, small non-hindering shields are your best bet.  {{ilink|s|Target shield}}s from the [[Field Goblin|goblins]] west of the [[Crossing]] make a good starter shield.&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

An arm-worn shield will penalize shots fired by a longbow, short bow, or composite bow, as per the standard penalties for two-handed weapons.&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

As skill approaches 100 ranks, moving to medium-sized shields will begin to pay off.  Larger shields are generally more hindering, but with more skill in shield your defense will improve at an increased rate compared to the shield&#039;s maximum appraised protection.  Shield defense will increase at a slower pace after the maximum appraised protection has been reached.&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Experience is now awarded to all skills you are stanced to use, regardless of whether or not that skill is actually contested. It may still be in your better interest to swap stances around a little, but the need to stance down dramatically (especially in evasion) should not be as common or necessary.&lt;br /&gt;

==Arm-worn Shield Notes==&lt;br /&gt;
The {{com|ADJUST}} verb changes any shield to allow wearing on the arm.  Adjusting it again will revert it to shoulder-worn.&lt;br /&gt;

There are two types of magical research introduced with [[Magic 3.1]]: Research and Symbiosis.&lt;br /&gt;
*Research-type gives an instant lock of any magic skill after full completion of the linked research project (see below for options).&lt;br /&gt;
*Symbiosis-type increase the difficulty of a spell that is prepared with a symbiosis, thereby increasing the spell&#039;s learning potential for that cast. This also gives the spell an additional effect which can alter the skills the spell trains. E.g. Using a symbiosis that adds a skill buff will cause a spell to train Augmentation in addition to any skills it normally trains if it doesn&#039;t already.&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

These research projects use the same base mechanics as [[Appraisal skill#Appraise Focus|{{tt|Appraise Focus}}]] and so cannot be performed at the same time as an appraise focus project.&lt;br /&gt;

===Basic Research===&lt;br /&gt;
1) Cast the [[Gauge Flow]] spell. The potency of the spell will affect time necessary for researching.&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
2) Start a Research project - RESEARCH &amp;lt;type&amp;gt; &amp;lt;duration&amp;gt; (See the table below for the types of research.)&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
3) Continue the Research project by doing RESEARCH &amp;lt;duration&amp;gt; until complete. You can use RESEARCH STATUS to see how far along you are on your project.&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
4) When the project completes, you will receive a message regarding your breakthrough. Experience for research is only awarded at this step.&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

2) Feats - Unlock Symbiosis - Each feat is tied to a skillset. Arcana Skill required for each feat.&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
3) Spells - You need to be able to cast a spell you want to symbiotically enhance with somewhat more than minimum prep when not using the symbiosis or you won&#039;t have enough skill to cast the symbiotic version at minimum prep.&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;&#039;Research is not designed for very low-level characters; it is primarily used to extend training for very skilled characters when using spells they can otherwise cap, and to manage attunement costs when training for moderately skilled players.&#039;&#039;&#039; &amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

The four scenarios in which you will find yourself needing to use Research to train are: &amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

There are two types of magical research introduced with [[Magic 3.1]]: Research and Symbiosis.&lt;br /&gt;
*Research-type gives an instant lock of any magic skill after full completion of the linked research project (see below for options).&lt;br /&gt;
*Symbiosis-type increase the difficulty of a spell that is prepared with a symbiosis, thereby increasing the spell&#039;s learning potential for that cast. This also gives the spell an additional effect which can alter the skills the spell trains. E.g. Using a symbiosis that adds a skill buff will cause a spell to train Augmentation in addition to any skills it normally trains if it doesn&#039;t already.&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

These research projects use the same base mechanics as [[Appraisal skill#Appraise Focus|{{tt|Appraise Focus}}]] and so cannot be performed at the same time as an appraise focus project.&lt;br /&gt;

===Basic Research===&lt;br /&gt;
1) Cast the [[Gauge Flow]] spell. The potency of the spell will affect time necessary for researching.&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
2) Start a Research project - RESEARCH &amp;lt;type&amp;gt; &amp;lt;duration&amp;gt; (See the table below for the types of research.)&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
3) Continue the Research project by doing RESEARCH &amp;lt;duration&amp;gt; until complete. You can use RESEARCH STATUS to see how far along you are on your project.&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
4) When the project completes, you will receive a message regarding your breakthrough. Experience for research is only awarded at this step.&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

1) [[Arcana skill]] - required to learn Research-type options. Fundamental can be researched by everyone. Chaos is free for everyone and does not need to be researched.&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
2) Feats - Unlock Symbiosis - Each feat is tied to a skillset. Arcana Skill required for each feat.&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
3) Spells - You need to be able to cast a spell you want to symbiotically enhance with somewhat more than minimum prep when not using the symbiosis or you won&#039;t have enough skill to cast the symbiotic version at minimum prep.&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;&#039;Research is not designed for very low-level characters; it is primarily used to extend training for very skilled characters when using spells they can otherwise cap, and to manage attunement costs when training for moderately skilled players.&#039;&#039;&#039; &amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The four scenarios in which you will find yourself needing to use Research to train are: &amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
1) Your guild does not have a high level spell to train a specific magic skill efficiently&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt; &lt;br /&gt;
2) You want/need the bonus from a symbiosis.&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
3) Guarantee of mindlocking a skill. &amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

This is the first beseech that requires a quest.  As with all quest beseeches go find [[Tomma]] and ask her about beseeches.  From there it&#039;s a quick jaunt on the gondola to the [[snowbeast]] hunting area on the north side of the gondola.  You need to SEARCH in each room till you find a rose in ice.  The rose moves around so if you canvas the whole area and do not find it, start over.  &lt;br /&gt;
After finding the rose, CARVE it out of the ice using an edged weapon. It may take several tries. Then WEAR it to take it back. If you put it in a container it will crumble away and you&#039;ll have to find it all over again. Return to Tomma and ask her about the beseech with the rose in your hand to complete the quest.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Note: There appears to be a mechanical lore requirement of greater than 70 ranks for this quest, likely between 80 and 100.  It also appears that more than 125 perception is needed to see the rose easily.  It&#039;s possible to see it with as little as 120 perception, but it can take many tries to find it fully and not just &amp;quot;catch a glimpse&amp;quot;.&lt;br /&gt;

This is the first beseech that requires a quest.  As with all quest beseeches go find [[Tomma]] and ask her about beseeches.  From there it&#039;s a quick jaunt on the gondola to the [[snowbeast]] hunting area on the north side of the gondola.  You need to SEARCH in each room till you find a rose in ice.  The rose moves around so if you canvas the whole area and do not find it, start over.  &lt;br /&gt;
After finding the rose, CARVE it out of the ice using an edged weapon. It may take several tries. Then WEAR it to take it back. If you put it in a container it will crumble away and you&#039;ll have to find it all over again. Return to Tomma and ask her about the beseech with the rose in your hand to complete the quest.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Note: There appears to be a mechanical lore requirement of greater than 70 ranks for this quest, likely between 80 and 100.  It also appears that more than 125 perception is needed to see the rose easily.  It&#039;s possible to see it with as little as 120 perception, but it can take many tries to find it fully and not just &amp;quot;catch a glimpse&amp;quot;.&lt;br /&gt;
