Description
Small but thick scaled plates cover the drake from head to claws while thicker, angular plates descend along the creature's back. His tail swishes from side to side, leaving flickering sparks of electricity in its wake. With a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth and quill-like barbs protruding menacingly from the tip of his tail, the drake is built for survival -- either by overpowering his foes or enduring and outlasting their attacks.

Recall
Long feared by sailors that ply the eastern oceans, the crackling hiss and yowl of the gale drake's flight means certain death for all but the most prepared or evasive of seafarers. These creatures of the sky are ferocious predators, and rumors of ever larger marine life being carried away in their claws remains one of the few agreed upon, not exaggerated observations claimed by seafarers.

Charged with wind and lightning and willing to fight for any meal or infringement of their territory, the drakes are thought to be distant relatives of mountain-dwelling wyverns. They spend much of their time aloft, coasting on thermals and soaring within and between the clouds. Migrating with the seasonal monsoons, the drakes have been observed dancing and diving around waterspouts and the edges of typhoons.

Though recently settling on the Pivilho volcano, the drakes have largely left the islanders alone, seemingly preferring to hunt over water. However, repeatedly corroborated claims of seeing drakes flying while carrying fully grown oxen suggest that they are more than able to hunt terrestrial prey.

The gale drakes are known to cast the Swirling Winds, Vertigo, Mark of Arhat, Lightning Bolt, and Chain Lightning spells.

They are not known to carry loot in locked boxes.
Skinning is a Survival skill used to harvest pieces of slain creatures. The resulting treasure can be sold to fur traders for coin, or used in various creation systems.
|format=ul
|headers=hide
|default=None
}}

Usage
Skinning is performed primarily via the SKIN command.

If you're wearing a belt worn knife, it will automatically be used to skin without taking it out, as long as you have one free hand. This makes it less tedious to skin while in combat, as you no longer have to switch weapons.

Training strategy
You can learn skinning simply by holding an edged weapon in one hand and attempting to SKIN <creature>. Scraping a pelt, skin or hide with a hide scraper also teaches skinning as well. This used to teach Mechanical Lore as well, but no longer does. Fish caught via Fishing may also be scraped in this manner. Tending bloodsuckers also teaches some skinning.

Agility, Intelligence and Discipline are the stats that factor into skinning. Results from skinning may be improved by using light edged weapons, skinning knives in particular, and by kneeling before the creature you are attempting to skin.

The size of the weapon used to skin matters for all guilds except Rangers. Using a skinning knife gives the largest bonus, closely followed by the belt worn knives. All other weapons, include other types of knives, are merely rated based on their size.

ARRANGE is now available to all guilds, though Rangers are best at it. There are the Leather Tanning Expertise technique in the Tailoring discipline and Basic Bone Collecting technique in the Carving discipline that both grant the ability to ARRANGE ALL in addition to providing a bonus to the quality of harvested skins and bones respectively.

If a creature is arranged the maximum amount, it is guaranteed to yield perfect skin *if* the skinner has the skill to obtain it.

Additional notes
*Skin value is based off of creature level.
*Skin difficulty is based off of creature level. Different messaging is received based on the success of the skinning attempt. From best to worst:
*These require some amount of arranging to accomplish:
**Moving with impressive skill and grace, you effortlessly retrieve a perfect (part/skin/bone) from the (creature).
**Your (skinning tool) moves as a fluid extension of your hand, harnessed to your single-minded drive for a (creature) (part/skin/bone). Skill and dexterity combine to yield up a nearly flawless (creature) (part/skin/bone).
**You skillfully peel the (creature) (part/skin/bone) off a/an (creature).
*These can be accomplished without arranging:
**With preternatural poise, you work loose a sterling example of a (part/skin/bone) from the (creature) carcass.
**Working deftly, you skillfully remove a (part/skin/bone) from the remains of a (creature). The task is difficult, but the rewards are worth it.
**You slice away a bloody trophy from the dripping flesh that was a (creature), gaining a superior (part/skin/bone) for your efforts.
**You work diligently at skinning an (creature), peeling the (creature) (part/skin/bone) away from the oozing flesh beneath it.
**You work hard at peeling the (part/skin/bone) away from the bloody carcass of the (creature), managing to get it without too much damage or splashing of gore.
**You skin an (creature) fairly well, getting a decent quality (creature) (part/skin/bone) only slightly tainted with gore and fluids from the carcass.
**You struggle with the (creature) and manage to remove the (part/skin/bone). Blood soaks into it badly though, nearly ruining it.
**With immense difficulty, you just barely pry the (part/skin/bone) from the (creature). You're certain that wasn't at all how it was supposed to go, though.
Starlight Aura

SERBITAR3: /* Environmental Requirements */

The Trader confound is the Starlight Aura; the ability to siphon the supernatural energies of the stars through their minds and around them for later use. This is done automatically under the correct conditions, but may be augmented by the Noumena and Stellar Collector spells. Many Trader spells have environmental requirements which Starlight Aura can substitute for.

Environmental Requirements
Generally speaking, Trader spells fall into four type of environmental requirements:
*None: Can be cast freely.
*Stars / Bright Moons: Must have access to starlight or the light of Xibar/Yavash.
*Stars: Must have access to starlight specifically.
*Moons: Like a traditional Moon Mage spell, requires one of the three moons.
:Starlight aura cannot substitute for the last requirement.

Without Noumena in place, there are three conditions necessary for natural aura growth:

*It must not be overcast. Mild cloud cover doesn't hinder you.

*It must be night time.

*You must be out under the open sky.

Three things to note about the aura.

*Its capacity is directly related to your Lunar Magic and scales pretty high. The floor of the system is at 20 ranks of Lunar Magic (below that you're just given the value of 20 ranks as a courtesy). Your aura will have double its original capacity by 40 ranks, and it will continue to grow until you hit 1000 ranks.

*Its regen is directly related to your Wisdom and each and every point in Wisdom contributes to the size of your regen pulse. It will double from its default (assuming a 0-mod race) at around 40 Wisdom and continue to grow in perpetuity (though there's a practical limit to how much you'll want to invest into Wisdom).

*Most aura costs are related to the mana you're putting into the spell. It costs more aura to power a 4-mana spell than a 2-mana spell.

When you're drawing on your aura in the early stages of your magic you want to be careful about how much mana you put in. Bearing in mind that early in a Trader's life they have free access to Analogous Patterns spells that cover every skill except Utility, which can be covered by Noumena at 2nd circle.

As your skills and stats increase, the aura's limits loosen up considerably and casting more powerfully and repeatedly under adverse conditions will become possible. By the time you lose access to the AP spells you should have enough Lunar Magic to notice a substantial improvement over Noobler's First Aura.

Perceiving Your Aura
*PERCEIVE AURA: Will give a few lines of information:

You close your eyes and take a measure of your aura.
Starlight dances vividly across the confines of your aura.
Your aura contains as much starlight as you can safely handle.
Local conditions are hindering the growth of your aura.
Roundtime: 6 sec.

The first line is just messaging, but the next three each convey a separate piece of information:
* Starlight dances vividly across the confines of your aura:
:This is like your aura inventory. It's just telling you how much you currently have stored up. It corresponds to the list of levels given below. So I'm currently at a 6 on that list.
* :
:This tells you that you can't fit any more Starlight. You've charged as much as you can. If this is not true then this line will not appear at all.
* Local conditions are hindering the growth of your aura:
:This is telling you the rate of change of your aura inventory. So how fast you are charging.
:There are three variations here:
::*"prohibiting": you're not charging at all, which means one of three conditions listed above is not met
::*"hindering": you are charging your Aura, but charging it slowly -- you are probably using Noumena to bypass one of the conditions above
::*"optimal": you are meeting all three of the conditions above, and your Aura is charging as fast as it can

Starlight Aura Levels
Levels:
#The smallest hint of starlight flickers within your aura.
#A bare flicker of starlight plays within your aura.
#A faint amount of starlight illuminates your aura.
#Your aura pulses slowly with starlight.
#A steady pulse of starlight runs through your aura.
#Starlight dances vividly across the confines of your aura.
#Strong pulses of starlight flare within your aura.
#Your aura seethes with brilliant starlight.
#Your aura is blinding!
#The power contained in your aura defies visual metaphor.

Glowing Iron Fragments
Can invoke a i while holding it to refill starlight aura:
*
Description
The hierophant is nothing more than the befouled remains of a fallen priest, corrupted and turned to do the bidding of a false deity. The creature is entirely shrouded in tattered black robes, concealing all about it but its vague shape.

In Depth
Special Attack
A sinister Maelshyvean hierophant surges with a bloody crimson aura as a writhing ebony tentacle lashes out of its robes and strikes out at you!

The barbed tentacle coils viciously around your left arm, crushing bone and ripping flesh with a good strike!

Cap Summary
Simple summary: This creature caps at about 650-700. Detailed summary caps are below:

Evasion basically stops at 700-720

Shield/armor still exp slows at 720

Stealth exp slows at 700 and stops at around 720.

Weapons slow at around 625 and stop at 700.

You can hit them with 350-400 in TM and Debilitation magic, but you have to raise your 'spell integrity' high due to their natural immunity to spells (evil).

A good suggestion is to have all mental stats to at least 60. Their spells will kill you quickly if they hit you and usually will result in a stun.

Compared to other creatures of similar difficulty, these creatures have high parry ability, making it more difficult to hit with melee weaponry.

Reliably hiding at melee requires more than 610 effective ranks of Stealth with 60 Discipline.

__NOTOC__

Description
Part of a collective legion that functions as the sword-arm of corrupt demigoddess Maelshyve, the cinder beast is a hulking beast in the vague form of a man with unnaturally frightening musculature and covered in glistening metallic-red scales. Stout ebon spines run down its neck, back, and arms. Sizable tusks jut from beneath its fearsome maw. It towers a few feet above even the tallest Gor'Tog, dwarfing you further with a pair of talon-tipped black wings that spire skyward from behind its back. Gruesome ebon claws adorn its thick arms and legs, each tined with three individual spikes.
A radiant green glow burns furiously within its deep-set eyesockets, illuminating its slavering blood-drenched maw.

Special Attack
They may explode upon death. Protection from Evil and Ethereal Shield spells ward off the explosion.

Uses a special attack in order to get out of any type of stun. This occurs almost immediately upon being stunned, however, they retain their off-balanced state. If the beast is knocked prone, it will return to a standing position as well.

A Maelshyvean cinder beast releases a violent roar as a blood-red cinder sparks within the green glow suffusing its eyes. Flames rapidly wash outward, consuming its platemail-like scales and leathery wings like brittle parchment. Its now-skeletal figure drops to its knees as its bellowing grows to an unbearable, cacophonous din.

The beast raises its claw to the sky in a final gesture of supplication to its mistress Maelshyve as the flames erupt in a whirling dance around it!
