stub
RTOC
Tinkering is a discipline of the Engineering skill.

The Tinkering discipline involves the creation of objects that make use of gears or other mechanisms.

Basics
The first step to make an item is to scrape prepared lumber with a drawknife. Then continue carving with a carving knife until an adjustment should be made with Tinker's tools, pushing with clamps, pulling with pliers, or assembling with a mechanism or bowstring. To finish a tinkered item, apply some wood stain to it to protect it.

Techniques
:See Tinkering techniques.

Materials/Preparation
Tinkered items are made with wood, and also metal mechanisms made on a gear press. The ductility stat of the metal used to make the mechanism is relevant for crossbows; higher ductility increases balance while low ductility increases suitedness at the cost of balance.

:For a detailed list of materials and stats, see the crafting materials page for wood.

Products
:For a detailed list of products and stats, see the Tinkering products page.

Wood
Wood materials of low quality and decent enough price can be conveniently obtained from an engineering society shop, or materials of a wider variety and higher quality can be obtained through the laborious process of lumberjacking.

*The hardness of the wood affects the finished item's durability.
*The stiffness will affect...
*The physical resistance will affect...
*The shortbow/longbow/composite bow affinity of the wood determines the best type of crossbow to make with it: light crossbows use composite bow affinty, heavy crossbows use longbow affinity, and arbalests use short bow affinity. Higher affinity contributes to increased balance and attack power. The higher the affinity, the higher balance and attack power is possible.
*Each wood-type has a density that affects how much items crafted from it weigh.
*Each wood-type has a value modifier that determines how much things created from it cost.
*A wood's workability affects how much additional skill is necessary to craft items from it.

Wood purchased from a society building will be ready to use, but wood claimed from the wilds must be processed, first CUT wood with a woodcutter's saw and then CUT/SCRAPE wood with a drawknife. This will turn your stick/limb/etc into LUMBER, which can then be combined with other lumber of the same wood-type. To reduce the size of your lumber-stack, first MARK the lumber to the number of pieces you would like, then holding a pair of scissors, CUT your lumber WITH SCISSOR.

Tools
:See Crafting tools for an in depth discussion of them.
* Woodcutter's saw
* Scissors (to cut twine on lumber stacks)

Item List
:See Tinkering products.

Mechanism crafting
Crossbows and other tinkered items require assembling with a mechanism to function.

Mechanisms are made on a gear press with an ingot or nugget of at least 5 volume. Gear presses work by pressing the metal through dies at high temperature; therefore they must be supplied with fuel before crafting can begin, and pliers should be used to avoid burning your hands.
Start by push fuel with a shovel a few times to get the fire going, and then hold pliers in one hand and push ingot/nugget with press to turn it into an unfinished mechanism. Continue pushing the unfinished mechanism with the press until complete.

RTOC
Engineering is one of the crafting skills that deals with creating complex mechanical things. Lockpick carving will contest the Engineering skill if it is higher than Mechanical Lore skill.

Disciplines
Engineers specialize in many things, and Engineering is separated into three disciplines:

*Carving: the creation of tools, weapons, armor, images, and other utility items from bone and stone.
*Shaping: the creation of bows, arrows, martial weapons, images, and furniture from wood.
*Tinkering: the creation of crossbows, bolts, toys, and other complex machinery.

Training
Training the Engineering skill is accomplished by creating Engineering products within each discipline. Work orders within the released disciplines can be obtained from a Master/Mistress within each Engineering Society, giving players the option of being compensated for their work in this skill.

It is possible to carry tools and material to carve bone or shape wood almost anywhere in the game, so players training these disciplines are not limited to working within the confines of a Society building. Because of the weight of stone, it is usually necessary to deed raw material and only carve stone from inside of a Society building where deeds can be redeemed.

The Shaping guide provides an overview and steps needed to produce current Shaping products. Several partially complete guides to Carving can be found on the Carving discipline page.

Materials
The Carving discipline uses either bone or stone as source material for its products. Bone is primarily gathered and prepared through skinning creatures, and stone is gathered with mining. Some common types of both bone and stone can also be purchased in Engineering Societies.

The Shaping and Tinkering disciplines use wood as source material. Wood is collected by lumberjacking or some common wood types can be purchased within Engineering Societies.

See the crafting materials page for further details regarding bone, stone, and wood types that can be used to create Engineering products.

Tools
The Carving and Shaping disciplines can be done using only hand-held tools (primarily knives, saws, rasps, and rifflers) that are sold within each Engineering Society. Higher quality player-made versions of these tools can also be created with the Blacksmithing discipline. There are several consumable (limited use) tools such as clamps, glue, and polish that are also sold in the Society buildings. It is also expected that the Tinkering discipline will require stationary tools available within each Engineering Society.

When not in use, tools can be stored at a Society building with that Society's clerk by putting them on the counter. Player-crafted tools can also be stored with a deed packet and register.

See crafting tools for a full listing and further information about Engineering tools.
Mark is a Thief only ability that assesses your ability to successfully perform a thiefly action. The Ranger's Scout Awareness ability is similar but is limited to Hiding and Stalking. Only other Thieves and Paladins can notice a mark. It takes Appraisal into account.

General information
*Effective ranks
Mark uses EFFECTIVE ranks. All boosts and penalties on both the thief and the target are reflected in the mark. For example, if a target marks as diffcult, and then a thief boosts her skills with khri, the target might now mark as easy.

*Difficulty of getting a "certain" mark
The more skilled a target is compared to the thief, the more difficult it is for the thief to get accurate information. You know a mark is "certain" by the phrase, "You feel highly confident in the accuracy of your judgement."

Mark as a training tool
Mark teaches both Appraisal and Perception. See below for more details.

Shops
The amount taught depends on how hard the item is to steal. Harder items teach more than easier items, and items you have no hope of grabbing still do not suffer an exp penalty compared to items you can steal.

There does not appear to be a timer on teaching. Be aware however there is a timer on how many items in a shop you can mark before getting a charge for hooliganism.

Therefore it is always the best to mark the hardest item in the shop, up until you get the warning message:
You think that sizing up any additional items may cause the shopkeep to take unwanted notice of you.

Difficulty is broken down between grabbing the item and getting caught. At higher levels of stealing and appraisal, thieves can detect how much "heat" or notice they've drawn from their stealing. Messaging is in order of easiest to hardest:

GRABBING THE ITEM:
#it would be taking candy from a baby.
#it would be stealable even with your eyes closed.
#it should be trivial for one of your skills.
#it should be an easy target for you.
#it should not prove difficult for you.
#it should be more likely liftable than not.
#it should be about even odds.
#it may give you some difficulty to lift.
#it may be troublesome to lift.
#you don't think well of your chances to lift it.
#it may be quite the struggle to nab.
#it would likely be futile to bother.
#you can already feel the taste of bitter failure.
<br />
GETTING AWAY WITH THE THEFT:
#nobody will ever miss it.
#you could just waltz on out with it.
#it should be trivial to avoid attention.
#it should be easy to avoid attention.
#it should not prove too difficult.
#it should be possible.
#it's about even odds.
#perhaps it's a little risky.
#it'll be troublesome to be unnoticed.
#it's somewhat of a long shot.
#you're pretty sure you'll be caught.
#the shopkeep is paying far too much attention to it.
#the heavy *THUD* of a judge's gavel echoes through your mind.
<br />
SHOPKEEPER ATTENTION
#shouldn't really affect you
#hinders your chances slightly
#has closer eye on you
#looks your way suspiciously
#looking for an excuse to call the guards
#beyond foolish to keep at it

Creatures
*Timer

The timer for marking creatures is one minute, and it is per creature. Each new creature marked will award exp, however marking the same creature twice will not award exp unless there was one minute between each mark of the creature.
The timer was tested by Zihnj using a favor orb to clear out exp after marking a creature, and then repeatedly marking again until exp was awarded.

*Teaching Range

Mark has a very wide teaching range. Zihnj was able to move his perception and appraisal from clear to dabbling on a caracal at 1200 and 850 ranks, respectively.

Players
Messaging is in order of easiest to hardest.

HIDE:
*be lucky to see a baby thief, let alone you.
*couldn't spot the broad side of a barn.
*shouldn't catch you.
*has a low chance of catching you.
*should not find you terribly often.
*got good eyes, you'll be spotted pretty easily.
*Well, miracles occasionally happen. Right?

STALK:
*blind as a bat. Go for it.
*you could likely tail him forever.
*you can already imagine <player> smirking on noticing your clumsy, graceless steps.

BACKSTAB:
*be dead before he hits the ground.
*back is wide open to you.
*should be quite surprised!
*has a low chance of stopping your attack
*should not notice your attack.
*it should be possible.
*it's about even odds.
*perhaps it's a little risky.
*it'll be troublesome to get at his back.
*it's somewhat of a long shot.
*you're pretty sure you'll be noticed.
*too wary for you to take a shot at him.
*Perhaps you should just give up and become a paladin.

STEALING:
*would cower before you, that is if he could ever see you coming.
*should be blind to your actions.
*shouldn't catch you.
*has a low chance of catching you.
RTOC
Tinkering is a discipline of the Engineering skill. Tinkering is currently only on the Test server, pending live release to the main servers.

The Tinkering discipline involves the creation of objects that make use of gears or other mechanisms.

Basics
The analyze command generally can be used to determine the qualities of crafted items, as well as the next step they require. For more specific information, appraise the item carefully to tell you how its inherent properties compare on the Trader Scale.

Techniques
:See Tinkering techniques.

Materials/Preparation
:For a detailed list of materials and stats, see the crafting materials page for wood.

Products
:For a detailed list of products and stats, see the Tinkering products page.

Wood
Wood materials of low quality and decent enough price can be conveniently obtained from an engineering society shop, or materials of a wider variety and higher quality can be obtained through the laborious process of lumberjacking.

*The hardness of the wood affects the finished item's durability.
*The stiffness will affect...
*The physical resistance will affect...
*The light crossbow, heavy crossbow, and arbalist affinities determine the best type of crossbow to make with it. It also contributes to increased balance and attack power.

* Woodcutter's saw
* Rifflers
* Carving knife
The analyze command generally can be used to determine the qualities of crafted items, as well as the next step they require. For more specific information, appraise the item carefully to tell you how its inherent properties compare on the Trader Scale.

Techniques
:See Shaping techniques.

Materials/Preparation
:For a detailed list of materials and stats, see the crafting materials page for wood.

*The shortbow/longbow/composite bow affinities determine the best type of bow to make with it. It also contributes to increased balance and attack power.

* Woodcutter's saw
* Drawknife
* Rifflers
* Carving knife
* Wood finishing kit
* Chisels
* Adze
* Rasp
* Clamps
* Wood shaper
* Glue
* Bow string
* i
* i
* Scissors (to cut twine on lumber stacks)

Shaping
The first step is to turn your shaping book to the desired chapter and page, then study it. If making an item with variable design then the first step is to turn your design codex to the desired chapter and page and study it before studying the page in the shaping book. After that, scrape <lumber> with drawknife and then switch to a carving knife and carve <object> with knife until the item is complete or a problem is reached.
* Shaping with a wood shaper is needed to smooth the upper and lower limbs.: hold a wood shaper and shape <object> with shaper.
* A bulbous knot will make continued shaping difficult unless rubbed out with a rasp.: hold a rasp and rub <object> with rasp.

During bow shaping, you may have other problems arise like the following:

* The bow now must be pushed with clamps or a vice to hold it in place.: push <object> with clamp/vise.
* Some wood stain should be applied to the wood to finish it.: apply stain to <object>.

Finally, attach your bow string using assemble <item> with string.

When shaping arrows, you first need to make the shafts, then the arrowheads. Once you have both, get yourself some flights from the society. Make sure your shaping book is turned to the correct page and study it. Then you need to have the shafts in your hand, and a shaper, and SHAPE MY SHAFT WITH MY SHAPER. After that follow the instructions you see or analyze the arrows to figure out your next step. Its also worth mentioning you need to use wood glue from the society for arrows, not the flight glue you sometimes get when hunting.

Wood shaping repair
Wood shaping repair requires i and i which can be purchased from engineering societies.<br />
Knowledge of shaping repair techniques can dramatically aid the repair process. <br />
Multiple applications of sandpaper and stain may be required for heavily damaged items. <br />
*Rub, Scrape or Clean the item to be repaired with sandpaper. Next, Pour wood stain on or Apply wood stain to the item you're repairing. <br />

> buy strips

You decide to purchase the strips, and pay the sales clerk 625 Kronars.

The sales clerk hands you your leather strips.

> assemble short with my strip

>
The leather strips is not required to continue crafting the competition shortbow, so you stop assembling them.

Tried again with strips purchased from the forging society, and it didnt work. Are the strips necessary or a bugged message? If they are necessary are they applied via "assemble" or using some other mechanism? Also if they are required should the engineering society extras crate stock them?
Foraging Tasks
Mags no longer recognizes sticks and limbs that are foraged for Foraging tasks, presumably because of the material adjectives.
General information
Khri (pronounced 'kree') is a group of Thief abilities that entail heightened concentration to increase awareness and body control.
*Khri is considered an in-game secret, but changes to Simutronics forum policies allow it to be discussed openly on the Forums.
*Each tree is taught by an individual guild leader. Subtlety is taught by Crow. Finesse is taught by Ivitha. Potency is taught by Kalag the Sly.
*The term "khri" is used for both singular and plural.
*All khri can be stacked together with no limit to how many can be stacked at once. There is no extra concentration cost for stacking multiple khri at once.
*Starting multiple khri at once has a skill check.
*The difficulty of activating a khri is affected by the Urban status of the area, and current confidence level. Positive confidence levels will make khri easier to start while a negative confidence level will make it more difficult.
*Generally speaking, you will be able to stand and start tier one at 50 ranks in magic, tier two at 100, tier 3 at 150, tier 4 at 250.

* Slot progression is 1st, 5th, and then 1 slot every 5th circle. You'll have all khri by 110th.

Syntax
To see what khri you know simply type khri by itself.

Starting khri
There are a few ways and options for how to start khri:
*KHRI start <khriname> - Starts the khri immediately.
*KHRI <khriname> - Starts the khri immediately.
*KHRI delay <khriname> - Starts the khri after a brief delay, but will enhance the ability in most cases.
If you are unable to start a particular khri due to it being too difficult, you can kneel/sit/lie down to make it easier. Even when you are able to start a particular khri while standing, you may find that starting it sitting/kneeling still enhances the power of the ability.
Most khri when started will slowly drain concentration. Some khri will instead take a chunk of concentration up front without any subsequent drain.

Stopping khri
Khri will end naturally after some period of time determined by your skill and the difficulty of the khri. They might also end if you no longer have the concentration to power them. If you want to end a khri manually you can:
*KHRI stop - Will end all khri.
*KHRI stop <khriname> - Will end just the specified khri.
Once a khri has ended it will be on a cooldown for a period of time. This can range from 5 seconds to 3 minutes based on your skills and the difficulty of the khri. Khri that do not continually drain concentration cannot be stopped, but generally the effects of those khri are instantaneous.

Forgetting khri
It is possible to forget a khri once you have learned it. This ability can be used at a Guildleader and only once every 30 RL days.

The command to forget a khri is:
*ask <leader's name> about unlearn <khriname>

Teaching khri
*teach khri <Khri Name> to <Person>

Misc khri commands
There are a few additional commands associated with khri that add additional functionality:
*KHRI check - Will display which khri are running, and which are on cooldown.
*KHRI meditate - Can be used to increase the learning rate of any active khri.
*KHRI meditate - When no khri are active it will reduce any cooldowns.
*KHRI help - Will bring up this information to read again.

Cost
There are 4 tiers of difficulty, and then Special Khri which have a larger one time concentration cost.
*Tier 1 (8 startup, 2 pulse) : Darken, Hasten, Focus.
*Tier 2 (12 startup, 3 pulse): Dampen, Strike, Silence, Safe, Avoidance, Sight
*Tier 3 (16 startup, 4 pulse): Shadowstep, Sensing, Flight, Liberation, Prowess, Plunder, Steady, Serenity, Elusion
*Tier 4 (20 startup, 5 pulse): Sagacity, Guile
*Special (One time cost): Calm, Eliminate, Vanish

Combination khri
Some combinations of khri will add in additional effects called combination khri. The name of the combination can also be used to start all associated khri without having to to type them all out by name. Typing KHRI by itself will let you know of any combinations you can perform.
