__NOTOC__

Description
The scaled atik'et resembles a slightly built S'Kra Mur woman with red-gold scales and a fiery crest atop her head. Flickering flames dance back and forth from finger to finger, and her lips are parted in a soft, hissing croon.

In Depth
There are three tiers of atik'et within the Gate of Souls area. The easiest are the Golden or Red-Gold Scaled Atik'et on the Blasted Plain. These are the intermediate Red-Gold Scaled Atik'et in the Temple of Ushnish. Highest tier of Red-Gold Scaled Atik'et are down the cliff behind the temple in an area known as The Fangs of Ushnish.

Accompanying this variety of atik'et are Mottled Westanuryn.

Due to their use of Parry Ability as their main defense, the scimitar-using variant is more difficult to hit than the greatsword-using one. This is to the point where, while in the Parry, their defenses are so good that even against a foe that barely learns from them, they can completely defend themselves much of the time. <br>
The atik'et appears immune to fire.<br />

Learning
Defenses still locking in the 280-300 range. The occasional hit occurs. Learning slowed down after 300, but still not soft capped at 307 for defenses. <br />
Able to keep 14 weapons moving, ranging from 200-280 ranks.<br />
Able to learn FA via DISSECT at < 200 ranks, if not lower.<br />
Boxes have been "at skill level" with 200 in Locksmithing.

Equipment
Description
Barely two feet long and made of dense chiton and sinew, the westanuryn resembles an oversized, nightmarish scorpion, right down to the vicious looking stinger held aloft in perpetual readiness. Lined along its front claws are jagged armor plates, most likely used to burrow through sand and dirt at speed, and provide additional protection from struggling prey to the front.

In Depth
Westanuryn is Gamgweth for Desert Scorpion.

Area Information
The Mottled Westanuryn apparently likes desert mazes because it has inhabited both the Velaka Desert and the M'riss Dunes of Despair. The Velaka Desert is a maze that is always randomly changing. Westanuryn can no longer be found in the Dunes of Despair - they have been replaced by Juvenile Desert Armadillo, Adult Desert Armadillo, and Elder Desert Armadillo.

Can be found at the Gate of Souls alongside the Red-Gold scaled atik'et (1).

Inventory/Loot
None

Special Attack
*Poison Stinger: A mottled westanuryn lurches forward to stab a pointed stinger at you!<br>
**Failure to Avoid: The mottled westanuryn's stinger lashes at you. The stinger lands a light hit that lodges in your left leg!
**Successful Avoid: The mottled westanuryn's stinger lashes at you. You quickly step aside.
*The severity of poison is based on how solid the hit was.
*The poison does nerve damage (I think), but does not cause stun, but any hit will cause some. The poison seems to only do minor vitality damage.
*The poison can be overcome by Thief poison purge or Paladin Courage spell.
Special Defense
*The westanuryn is immune to puncture.<br />

Notes
* The westanuryn stinger can be used to make Westanuryn Oil, a poison.
* Mottled Westanuryn are a player created mob created by the winning group of the hunting area creation contest at simucon 99

The scaled atik'et resembles a slightly built S'Kra Mur woman with red-gold scales and a fiery crest atop her head. Flickering flames dance back and forth from finger to finger, and her lips are parted in a soft, hissing croon.

Learning
Defenses still locking in the 280-290 range. The occasional hit occurs. <br />
Able to learn FA via DISSECT at < 200 ranks, if not lower.
__NOTOC__

Description
The blue-belly crocodile is large, approximately 30 feet in length from snout to tail. Bony plates cover its back and tail forming a kind of armor on its thick skin. The crocodile has a long, triangular snout. Its teeth, 30 to 40 in each jaw, are set into sockets in the jawbones and interlock when the mouth is closed; the fourth tooth from the front on each side of the jaw can always be seen, even when its mouth is shut. It is amphibious, spending most of time in the water, where it swims with rhythmic strokes of its tail. The tail is also used to capture prey, sweeping it from shallow to deeper water, where it can be devoured more easily. As it floats almost completely submerged, the crocodile's protruding nostrils and eyes and a portion of its back are the only parts visible as it stalks its prey. It moves most quickly in a belly crawl, but can also walk on all four legs.
At 120 Parry, as Weapons secondary guild, slowed considerably even with 4<br/><br/>

If you fight the in the Marsh, you'll quickly notice that you can move in the eight directions. The Marsh is a maze, so you may not exactly go the direction you want to (No messaging indicates this, unlike the Black Leucro area) so backtracking your way out will not work. To find your way out, walk around and type LOOK REED or until you find the shack. From there, go west, go northwest, and GO REED to exit the area. For a script to exit the area, go here.

Additionally, Rangers can SEARCH to find the direction of both the reeds leading out as well as to the shack. Not certain if this is based on skill, circle or a combination, but should be possible by the time the creatures can be hunted.

<s>Note that some verbs do not function in the Marsh as they do normally, particularly STALK, HUNT, KICK, and FLEE.</s>
*Not sure what doesn't function about HUNT, it works perfectly fine and normal for me on multiple characters, which is actually weird since it's a water area.
"Flee appears to have an experience gain timer of about 200 seconds. This was tested with ~20 escaping against a swarm of mobs in grendels/forest trolls. Being in melee with the maximum amount of critters (4) teaches best. Escaping skill allows you to break free of webs, nets, muck, and most other forms of entanglement you may encounter in your travels. It also allows you to flee dangerously overwhelming situations that would normally have meant your death.

When approaching the Escaping cap of an enemy, you fatigue less and maintain better balance while fleeing.

For those with warrants out for their arrest, the Escaping skill can be quite beneficial for avoiding the ire of town guards. In a sense, it adds to the characters ability to remain unobtrusive. A character with 100+ escaping and a warrant for his or her arrest can relatively safely walk within a city with an approximate 95% chance of not being captured on a "guard pulse."
Miscellaneous
Perception skill is reduced at nighttime unless using a dark-vision ability, such as Khri Sight. This change occurred Summer of 2007.

As confirmed by GameMaster Zeyurn on 3/14/2008, Intelligence and Wisdom are the statistics involved in Perception.

Thanks to the foraging experience changes, foraging is currently faster than juggling in terms of training perception. Foraging vines, for instance, moves the perception skill by one mindstate every 7 forages without using careful or precise at 20 INT, 10 DIS, and 81 perception.

Juggling and Weights
In general, you should juggle something that weighs 1/10 of your Perception ranks, rounded down to the nearest 5. For example, if you had 150 ranks in Perception, you would want to juggle something that weighed 15 stones. If you had 154 ranks in Perception, 15 stones would still be your ideal juggling weight.

Note that if you immediately drop the objects you're juggling, you will not gain any Perception experience. This means that you are trying to juggle something that is too heavy.

Per GM Ssra the juggling code is set up to only support teaching perception with jugglings weights of 70 stones or less.

NTIPPETS: /* Training Strategy */

Foraging is a survival skill used to find items which may be used in alchemy, fletching, or any number of other pursuits. Healing herbs are the best-known of the foraged items, but one can also forage to find wax for candlemaking, limbs and sticks for fletching, firewood, tea leaves, coffee beans, alchemical catalysts, grass and vines for braiding, branches for carving, or even items that can be used as improvised weapons, such as rocks and logs.

Usage
Foraging is primarily trained via the FORAGE and Collect commands.

<pre>
Forage Usage:
-------------------------------------------
FORAGE <item>
FORAGE <item> careful
FORAGE <item> precise
-------------------------------------------
COLLECT <item> is also an available option.</pre>

Survival primary guilds can use all of the options. Survival secondary guilds cannot forage precise. Survival tertiary guilds cannot forage careful or forage precise.

The careful option searches for a higher quality example of the foraged item, and thus has a slightly higher level of difficulty, and gives a longer roundtime. Precise is similarly more difficult still, with an even longer roundtime than careful, and results in an even higher quality example of the item. The more foraging skill you have, the better quality item you will find.

Collect will give a pile of the target item if successful, with a minimum roundtime of 15 seconds. The greater your foraging skill, the more items will be in your pile. The appearance of a pile will vary based on the guild of the person who collected it.

The order of quality from lowest to highest is as follows: collect, forage, forage careful, forage precise.

Foraging is also trained by Fishing.

Training Strategy
Currently (June/2012) the best strategy for training Foraging is to use the collect command. Difficulty of the item being foraged doesn't matter much as the easier item you collect, the more you will get, which grants more experience. Many players simply use COLLECT ROCK.

As of July 15th, 2009, all experience timers have been removed from foraging, and experience gained has increased significantly. This means it is now possible for survival terts to lock the skill without fishing, and easier for everyone to lock it in general. The experience from fishing has not increased. Fishing, however, also teaches Animal Lore and can also teach Skinning.

The general rule in training any skill is that the amount of experience you gain per action is a function of how successful that action was. So when foraging you want to go after the most difficult item you can reliably find. A good place to start is the Foraging Compendium, which can be used by referencing your foraging and Perception skill and finding where on the chart you are likely to learn.

It is easier to forage during the daytime as opposed to night. It is also easier to forage in good weather. Heavy rain greatly penalizes your chances of finding something.

Things that help boost foraging skill: ranger's raccoon, Wolf Scent Spell, Sprout Spell, any perception boosting ability/spell, any intelligence or wisdom boosting ability/spell. The Tenebrous Sense spell reduces the night-time penalty to foraging.

Commentary
"Personally I trained by repetitive foraging of sticks, then moving on to dirt when I could find it, then vines. Vines still teach pretty well at 170." - --Khazera 16:53, 23 March 2008 (CDT)

"Still getting mind locked by COLLECTing vines at 150 foraging" - Ithschaade 02:56, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
Description
Composed of rock, the gargoyle is a statue come to life at the hand of an ambitious mage. Mostly irate at the world and grumbling to itself about anything from the state of the Elven nation to the weather, the gargoyle does not look so much inclined to fight as it is to curl up in a corner and look frightening. Still, it knows its task as a protector of its creator's domain, and will do its best to keep invaders from treading on its turf.

Indepth
Very similar in all respects to the Granite Gargoyle, but seem to hit significantly harder.

Other
Mostly fails on skins with single arrange at 135.
Still slowly moving weapon at 225.
Boxes are tough at 137.

Soft cap on defenses at 241.

Quartz Gargoyles are in Fang Cove. You can join the mammoth to Fang Cove, but to leave the building where the mammoth docks, you need to be an estate holder.
