As the spring air carries the scent of new blossoms, we find ourselves in a familiar, yet persistently unsettling, season in the wider world. The whispers and echoes surrounding the Heralds continue to drift on the wind, a constant, low hum beneath the surface of our daily lives. While the initial shock and confusion have perhaps settled into a weary acceptance, concrete answers remain stubbornly out of reach. Despite the lingering uncertainty, Berries & Ink is here to help you make sense of the world, both mundane and (wild-) magical.

In this issue, we are thrilled to welcome two new contributors, Rekletuzrit and Zehira, whose works reflect the struggles and ambitions that define our time. Rekletuzrit's poem is a raw and relentless meditation on perseverance that can be read in more ways than one. Meanwhile, Zehira offers an intriguing perspective on the powers at play within the conflict that looms over us all.

As the days lengthen and the world around us continues its unpredictable dance, we hope this issue of Berries & Ink offers a moment of reflection, connection, and perhaps even a spark of understanding. We remain committed to providing a space for thoughtful exploration and shared experience, and we thank you, our loyal readers, for continuing this journey with us.

Like all good children, Mimi was obedient and quiet, and if you believe that I've got some snake oil to sell you. No, Mimi was wild and rambunctious, always escaping her chores to tumble through the meadows and sneak tarts from windowsills. While Olvi are certainly known to enjoy life, Mimi seemed intent on pushing its limits. She still loved her family, of course! But as soon as she could, she left her small village in search of adventure, and it was from here she found the brightly colored silks of the circus tent. It smelled both sweet and savory, the raucous noise from within like a siren song for little Mimi. Without a second glance back, our little adventuring acrobat pushed her way inside.

The name stuck. Maybe Zynell could help him understand. With one last glance at the flickering altars, Lavacano stepped back into the streets, ready to seek her out.

Then, a sharp chill cut through the room. The chaos suddenly stopped. The rats stood completely still. My curiosity quickly fell into suffocating terror as an icy prickle ran up the back of my neck and my breath turned bitter. After a moment of unnerving stillness, all eyes snapped in unison to a single target: me. The air thickened with the weight of their intentions.

I have been uneasy all morning.

But with war approaching, both sides would become weak, and she was ready to take advantage of that.

She had mastered the art of deception, easily tricking those around her. That, though, was a story for another day. As she read about the Gods, she thought, "How interesting. They are not so different from Them." Those she helped would just be pawns in her game. Standing, she adjusted her crown into place. Wrinkling her nose, she walked toward the door. "It's time to act..human."

For those I have never had the privilege of meeting in person - well, what are you waiting for! Come find me and let's explore the greatest little village around. While I did not grow up in Arthe Dale, it has quickly become a favorite spot of mine. I know you're thinking, 'of course, SheShe, you're a Halfling!' Well *yes* but also! Have you ever just let yourself stroll through the paths of the dale? Or picnic'd on the knoll? I encourage you to just sit on the grass some day and dip your feet in the swimming hole, listening to the life around you. And, it has to be said...take some of Thipbeet's tarts with you. I think sometimes people get so caught up in the busy-ness of it all that they forget to enjoy the simpler things. Let's rediscover them together!

At the base of the Carillon in Mer'Kresh, a footbridge gracefully arches over a sunlit brook adorned with roses and honeysuckle. Beneath the gentle current's surface, schools of speckled golden fish frolic among the submerged flora. Some lazily nibble on plants, while others playfully nip at each other. These small creatures evade any attempt at touch by a non-Empath. However, when an Empath's fingers caress their scaly hides, the Empath remarkably senses their injuries. By tossing crumbs of a fresh loaf purchased at Saja's Boarding House nearby, you're bound to summon a school of fish to voraciously consume it! The brook also serves as a place of reflection for Paladins, who can enhance the state of their soul by scattering an offering of coins into the wishful waters.

Under the cover of darkness, Lavacano stealthily slipped into the forest bandit camp, his every movement masked by shadows. As he observed the bandits, he noticed their callous demeanor and the fear they instilled in their captives. Determined to put an end to their tyranny, Lavacano bided his time, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
With a sudden rush of adrenaline, Lavacano sprang into action. With precise strikes and calculated moves, he swiftly subdued the bandits, disarming them before they even realized what had happened. As the camp fell into chaos, Lavacano turned his attention to the captive children, their eyes wide with fear. With a reassuring smile, he freed them from their bonds, leading them to safety amidst the chaos of the forest night.

Ingredients:
10 stones heavy cream
8 stones milk
3 stones sugar
3 spoonfuls honey
4 cobs worth of sweet corn kernels
7 large egg yolks
2.5 stones cream cheese
1 spoonful vanilla extract

Instructions:
Heat milk, cream, 2/3 of sugar, honey, and corn kernels, stirring often. Once simmering, remove from heat and cover. Let steep for an hour.
Puree, bring custard back to a simmer, then remove from heat.
Whisk egg yolks and the remaining sugar. Whisk 1/4 custard into yolks, then pour in remaining custard.
Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened. Remove from heat and whisk in cream cheese and vanilla.
Strain custard through sieve, then place in an ice bath. Once cooled, freeze in unlochai bucket.

[Town Hall, Public Meeting Room]
 The largest room in the Town Hall, this is used for public meetings. Both official meetings and ones held at the behest of townsfolk will be had here. Sometimes visiting scholars will lecture for the edification of the populace as well. Dark oak panelled walls and polished floor are surprisingly clean and in good repair. Padded benches for the public's use are arrayed about a small stage and podium. You also see a dark green moire silk cloth with several things on it, a dainty pet rat, an adorable snow-white husky puppy with enormous crystal blue eyes, a pink-eared white piglet with a dusty rose canvas bodice on it, a mottled slate grey kitten, a russet lynx that is sitting and some heavy double doors.

Kiiryn says, "Today we close our introduction series on dragons with a discussion on perhaps some of the most famous individual dragons in the Realms. The Dragon Paragons Glacis, Eerayn and Sildua."

Kiiryn says, "Now "Dragon Paragon" is a term that I coined myself and needs a bit of explanation. Glacis, Eerayn and Sildua were originally Heralds - and not the kind of herald person that runs around towns yelling things."

Kiiryn says, "These were Heralds with a capital H. Heralds are beings of such immense power that when they speak Gods listen. In recent memory, three Heralds determined that we lowly mortal races had abused Meraud's Gift and. They. Took. It. Away."

Kiiryn says, "Consider that for a moment, three of these immense entities of power concluded something and then were able to remove the ability to cast spells from everyone. Everywhere. In an instant."

Kiiryn says, "In the accounting of "The Day Magic Died," three Heralds made themselves known while a fourth entity that referred to these Heralds as "Sisters" explained to the World that Magic had been taken from mortals."

Kiiryn says, "Perhaps this entity was Meraud himself or more likely it was another Herald acting in conjunction with the previous three. Either way the implications of the power wielded by these Heralds are staggering."

Kiiryn says, "Now, why am I rattling on about near-godlike beings when we came to talk about dragons? Well, the short answer is three Heralds decided that they wanted to *be* dragons."

Kiiryn says, "And not just in form and name, but in choosing to become dragons they were no longer Heralds. In doing, so they instantly became three of the four most powerful dragons on the planet."

Kiiryn says, "Bonus points if you can come up with the fourth most powerful dragon on your own."

Kiiryn says, "At this time I'd like to take a moment and interject a personal request. In my lifetime I have never met a Dragon Paragon, if I were to cross paths with one I have no idea how I would parse the encounter. To be perfectly honest fairly sure it would be unpleasent at best. Where the creatures move mountains shake."

Kiiryn says, "What we talk about next is a bit of the background on what we know about these three individuals and if any or all of them are listening I truly hope they aren't offended by my telling of their encounters or interpretations of their actions. Sometimes history offends those who lived it."

Kiiryn says, "Before we dive into conjecture we can start with solid fact and go over what Dragon Paragons look like and where they are known to reside."

Kiiryn says, "Sildua is the easiest to describe because he chose to look the most like a "smaller" version of the World Dragon - which is also the answer to our previous bonus question - Black scales, razor sharp teeth with eyes as clear as water. Sildua has been glimpsed flying of Crossing and is known to have a lair behind the Erlinilaya falls outside of Shard as well as in the hills of Knife Clan."

Kiiryn says, ""Smaller" has to be taking in context for all three Dragon Paragons are immense compared to any human. Lanival marked their size at four Water Clan longhouses end to end and several stories in height."

Kiiryn says, "Eerayn is known for her large golden eyes and rainbow-colored scales. On rare occasion you can spot her at daybreak in the sky above Qi. Conventional theory suggest she lairs on a continent across the Great Ocean."

Kiiryn says, "Lastly we have Glacis. Historical physical descriptions of Glacis are sadly lacking, but most rumor places his scales as an icy blue-white. He famously lairs in the Dragonspine Mountains outside in Ilithi, but while the general location is well known, few have ever found his lair. It's highly likely that he uses strong magic to hide it and only allows those he chooses to find him."

Kiiryn says, "In addition to their draconic appearance it is wildly known that all three can appear humanoid as well."

Kiiryn says, "So what prompted these three to take a "mortal" form? The answer to that is very straight forward."

Kiiryn says, "Teiro in his battles with Lanival so many years ago began to unleash a spell of incredibly destructive power. Heralds, in general, seem to police the mortal races use of magic in a broad sense. Someone more versed in magical theory can weigh in on how and why but history makes it quite clear. Some spells are deemed too dangerous to cast."

Kiiryn says, "Just like when three of them deemed it necessary to remove magic from all mortals, three Heralds decided to give up a portion of their power and become dragons. Thus moving themselves closer to the mortal races. Using these draconic forms they took it upon themselves to erase this spell from the world by killing or removing the knowledge of it from all spellcasters that could cast it."

Kiiryn says, "I've talked about Glacis and his historical impact before but what I want to touch on today is a bit more interpretive. It focuses more on the question "What have they done since taking mortal form?" - To start when they first came forward all three Dragon Paragons acted in concert, but even at the beginning it was obvious to all present that Sildua did not like Glacis. Though they acted in unison they clearly were of different minds as to why."

Kiiryn says, "When all three approached Lanival they made it clear they would only support his cause for as long as the vile magic was in the minds of his enemy. For three immense dragons purging that spell from the lands was a relatively easy task but once that job was done the war still wasn't over."

Kiiryn says, "Eerayn and Sildua both withdrew as they said they would but Glacis stayed with Lanival until the war ended. Needless to say a gigantic dragon charging into your enemies was more than a minor help."

Kiiryn says, "This marks the first divergence from their Heraldic ideal of "protecting magic" - Glacis helped Lanival defeat Teiro and, some believe, that he gave Lanival the very idea of carving the land into five provinces. His reasons for doing this is solely his own. Looking back at the histories it seems like he was just helping out a friend in need. A remarkably normal sentiment perhap but history offers us nothing in the way of explination."

Kiiryn says, "Glacis mostly disappears from public view after Lanival's Sleep. Many have looked for him, including a famous expedition by the Warrior Mage guildleader Augrym. No one has found him or his lair since Lanival's time though."

Kiiryn says, "Eerayn's interactions with us are easily the most discret of all. Rumors suggests she shares a healthy correspondence with several Provincial leaders but outside of occasional, and unconfirmed sights of her flying over Qi she has not revealed herself publicly since the Resistance War."

Kiiryn says, "Sildua on the other hand is the the least discrete of all. While sighting him directly is rare, he has been known to taunt mortals on the gwethdesuan network, along with some wild and destructive mood swings."

Kiiryn asks, "It's been said that Sildua is as likely to save a city from invasion as he is to level it himself. Once he even hired out two mercenary companies to fight a prolonged war against each other for a reason only known to himself. Perhaps he was predisposed to violence as a Herald or maybe his choice in form somehow influenced his mortal personality?"

Kiiryn says, "From here we depart for history to conclude our talk with a theory and my own speculations. Those with knowledge of these three may have reconigzed that I've purposely retitled them. Usually they are referred to as the "Guardian Dragons." Not a bad name, Heralds seem to guard magic. These Heralds chose to be dragons. Obviously though this difference is at the heart of our discussion. If they had not chosen to become dragons, we wouldn't be talking about them at Dragons 101."

Kiiryn says, "When they first appeared as Dragons they were no longer Heralds, but they were still guarding magic. I have intentionally chosen a different name because at present time because I believe they are no longer Guardians."

Kiiryn says, "Where once they were united by a common goal now they only seem to serve their own interests, and they are not always altruistic. The are also clearly the most formidable and powerful active dragons on the planet. Dragon Paragons speaks to their past while emphasizing that these three dragons truely have no mortal equals and we have no clear idea what their motivations are anymore."

Kiiryn says, "Perhaps they will reveal themselves to us again at some point, but smart adventures would be wary."

We're thrilled to embark on this literary journey with you once again, and we hope you're ready for a fresh batch of stories, poems, and creative musings. A riot of vela'tohr flowers surrounds a portrait of a petite Prydaen woman who appears caught in the middle of an energetic twirl. Mischievous violet eyes rest above a whiskered nose, while her round face is further enhanced by a painted mask of thorny vines and vibrant blooms. Yet more colorful blossoms are scattered throughout her long, dark brown mane, its strands flowing around her body as if not yet settled from her spin. Her glittered fur of a soft sandy hue is sleek and soft, the ink artfully used to give it a subtle shimmer. Hello again, dear sartorial savants! What a spectacle to relay, such boundless creativity and style. I speak, of course, of THE Cythra's Arthe Dale concert. Concerts always elicit a gamut of chic looks, and the attendees of the event did not disappoint!

Event Hostess Nilme was elegant in a lavender gown and slippers, cascading beautiful blooms down the length of her skirts. Jaelia was a dreamy delight in starry indigo and plum. Much marblesilk was on display, as Kethrai stunned as usual in a saffron marblesilk ysin and Sonatina donned a flawlessly matched bardic blue marblesilk bandeau and skirt.

Many arrived directly from the Black Fox's Pajama Ball, lending an eclectic splash of sleepwear to the mix! Leayne's nightcap and nightgown were set off charmingly by a pair of bunny slippers.

Of course, none shone quite so bright as the star herself, THE Cythra, who wowed in a nightsilk corset and starlight velvet skirt, set off by beautiful Triquetra-adorned accessories.

In other news, our fashion spies report an up-and-coming trend that is sure to literally blow your socks off: toe bows! I concede, brave readers, that I was uncertain at first if this might be a new innovation in miniature, foot-loaded weaponry, but sources assure me that toe bows are in fact: 1. Lengths of ribbon in any variety of fabric, colors, and pattern that one might imagine, 2. Tied into elegantly looped knots around one's toes, and 3. Sure to be the latest fashion craze. Set an appointment with your tailor (or cobbler?) and get yours today!

Once, through strange circumstances, a Lion and a Man happened to travel together through the forest. To pass the time, they argued (like they do), that each of them and their kind were far superior to the other both in strength and mind.

In time, they reached a clearing in the forest and there stood a statue. It was a representation of a mighty warrior in the act of tearing open the jaws of a massive Lion.

"See how strong we are!" crowed the Man. "The so-called King of Beasts is like putty in our hands!"

"Hah!" laughed the Lion, "A Man made that statue. It would have been quite a different scene had a Lion carved it."

East of Rossman's Landing lies the enticing door to Viggu's Lair. Found through an abandoned village and underneath a small store, this door guards the domain of the orc chieftain Viggu, a villain who, along with his orc and goblin raiding parties, has long terrorized Therengia. Explorers will encounter a series of interactable mechanisms that may be the key to unlocking the door (or drive you crazy trying!) - a triangular button, a cracked wooden lever, a rusted crank, a pearlescent orb that responds to touch, a hidden rope, and a suspicious torch mounted several rooms away. This puzzle has drawn intrepid minds into its depths for decades, all of whom have failed to unlock its secrets. Will you be the one to finally solve it and confront Viggu?

I've been feeling the arena a bit quiet lately, and it has me curious. Perhaps some of you have honed your skills to the point that you think nothing can faze you. But everyone fights whether we want to or not. Life throws punches, both literal and figurative. That's why Wyvern Trials and spars are invaluable. They let us test ourselves in a safe space, learn from mistakes, and practice making decisions and fighting through stress. First lesson: Never give up. Mastering these core skills isn't just about personal growth, it's about protecting ourselves and those around us. It's a way to be there for your family, friends, and the community. The arena isn't about winning or losing, it's about growth, teamwork, and building the strength to face anything life throws our way. There is no win or lose, only growth. Standing atop the Greater Fist, Lavacano gazed out at the sprawling landscape below, his eyes settling on Dirge. Once a target of Krenze's cruelty, the village now bustled peacefully. Months had passed since the warlord's demise, but a pang of guilt still twisted in his gut for his part in the devastation. He was still an outcast - the villagers' fear of goblins kept him at bay.

But at that moment the rhythmic thud of boots shattered the usual quiet. A group of villagers approached, armed with shovels and other makeshift weapons, accusing him of kidnapping one of the children. Goblins wouldn't kidnap children, he argued, but bandits...he'd heard whispers of them moving through the forest. Lavacano slammed his fist on the table. "I know where they might be hiding. But you need to trust me."

You made it to the second issue! So did I! Honestly, I read the first issue and thought...I'm not good enough to be on the same page as all these brilliant authors. I'm just a little acrobat! But you know what, the best part of this world is how different we all are. Let me tell you about my first performance with my Cyr wheel, Twizzle! I was showing off to my family and I thought I was the empress of Riverhaven. (Also Riverhaven should have an empress.) I started spinning so fast that I went one way and Twizzle went another and, well...I broke my uncle's nose. Tumbled right into him. Twizzle tormented some chickens before crashing into the barn...the point is! Whether eloquent or rough, bright or dull, all of us have a story to tell - so what's yours?

I sat eating my berries, and glanced at my ink. It was getting quite low and I started to think.
If I went after ink, maybe pick up a quill? I already have ten, but I'll pick up one still.
Add parchments and notecards... the list just goes on. With new ink and a quill, those supplies won't last long.

The Crossing Post Office has a selection, quite large, but before I go there, I should hop on the barge.
Slafs Riza Rakstit has paper 'neath a layer of tissue. Picking up some surely won't be an issue.
Their paper with buttercups is perfect for me, and the blue paper resembling the waves of the sea.

I'll need half a dozen of the violet, as well. (It's amazing how quickly my bank balance fell!)
I left, armed with paper galore, then I realized I'd need just a little bit more.
Envelopes? Wax for my seal? I embraced all this shopping with excitement and zeal!

The Post Office in Ratha has wax of jet-black and Shard has the fuchsia - two colors I lack.
Fang Cove sells an envelope with a color so creamy. Just thinking about all the options was dreamy.
Hibarnhvidar? Not far! Aesry? A Dirigible away! Maybe I'll get a few stampbooks today!

I finished my berries and stepped out the door. Wait! What was the main thing I was going shopping for?
