We find ourselves in a curious interlude, a stillness where the echoes of past wonders linger while the anticipation of what comes next hangs in the air. The winds have calmed, the berries have been harvested, and for a heartbeat it's tempting to believe the skies might stay calm forever. But even the sweetest fruits hold a seed or two, and quiet days have a way of setting the stage for something more. The world has a habit of shaking the branches just when we start to get comfortable. So for now we wait -- minds open, ears tuned for whispers, and hearts quietly braced.

This issue holds a little of everything: tales of risk and revelation, sharp turns, and slow-burning truths. Portraits that intrigue, circuses and new friends, questionable bakeries, important lessons, dangerous research, tasty threads, secret sisters, and journeys to Ratha... and other islands. We're especially delighted to welcome our newest contributor, Father Gragnel, whose bite-sized ode to duskberries is strangely fitting for this publication.

As we wait -- for signs, for seasons, for stories yet to unfold -- may our minds be still, but never closed. We hope this issue offers you a spark, a sigh, or something to tuck away for later. Thank you, as always, for reading. Your curiosity keeps these pages alive.

The mere whisper of his name, each sibilant syllable, echoed tales of his necromantic power that dwarfed the mundane struggles of life and death. Crossing, though, had not fallen, and to His isle she went.

A rough voice like stone upon stone filled her mind: "Well done. You will come just outside of my throne room, and wait there. Pay no mind to the other one bleeding on the floor."

As the circus tent silks hissed closed behind her, Mimi was taken by a wide-eyed awe. The chaotic world inside was HUGE (especially to a small Olvi!), and filled with people of all shapes and sizes. King-sized Kaldar tamed wild beasts, nimble Gnomes tinkered with mysterious contraptions, and high above - an elegant Elf walked across a tightrope. Mimi knew immediately she had to be a part of it. She flounced around, watching every act as they practiced and chatted, eager to join them. And then - oh, then! - she stumbled into the most colorful, captivating Human she'd ever seen. Mimi gawked up at the figure, who grinned back down at her. The *Ringmaster*!

As many are sadly aware, Doctor Dokt in Knife Clan has taken on a new business: baker. Here is where you sigh heavily and feel suitably depressed. I visited his bakery and, apologies dear Dokt -- not one of your best ideas. On the positive, the cookies are redolent with healing herbs and tempting to the eye. On the negative, a darkly browned specimen promised a sweet and buttery caramel symphony for my tongue but just delivered bleh. It was as if the very essence of indulgence had been politely excused from the premises. As for texture, well, forget the delicate crumb. Dense to the point I could imagine using it for an impromptu doorstop. With respect to Dokt, the bakery fulfills an important niche, promised healing delivered. But I ask you, does a cookie truly heal if it leaves your palate feeling vaguely mournful? The jury, much like the flavor in these cookies, is decidedly out.

Volcano's heart citrine: A favorite among S'kra Mur artisans, this dark orange stone does not stay in its natural state for long. Once unearthed by those who dare to brave the volcanic rock of their origin, each gem is carefully cut to trap light within and reveal a core of blazing white haloe (skin-EW)d with the faintest touch of yellow. This expert faceting transforms the citrine into a brilliant display of fire and movement with a heart resembling molten lava. Often used to pay homage to the serpent god Ushnish and his sway over the destructive power of volcanos, it brings a dramatic elegance to its surroundings and is a fine addition to any collection.

At the center stood a shrine to Damaris, its dark stone altar nestled beneath twisted trees. There, in silent prayer, was the Prydaen Cleric of Damaris -- Zynell. Lavacano hesitated. "Are you Zynell?" he asked.

The Prydaen opened one eye, smiling gently. "That depends who's asking."

"I'm Lavacano," he said. "I want to learn about the Immortals... and maybe find one who'll walk with someone like me."

Zynell nodded slowly, motioning for him to sit. "Then you've come to the right place."

Once we watched a hawk circle lazily, while a swallow skimmed the surface of a pond to catch a dragonfly. As the hawk prepared to dive, my father covered my eyes and asked, "Who eats today?"

"The hawk," I answered. "It has better position, which means it has better speed."

"Close. Watch." He dropped his hands and we watched the scene unfold. The swallow maneuvered expertly, a hair's breadth from the surface of the pond as its prey zigged and danced. Without warning, the whip-fast tongue of a warty toad pulled the dragonfly into its gaping mouth. The swallow veered towards the reeds, but the hawk adjusted its trajectory and took the smaller bird in a puff of feathers.

My father let me internalize the moment before asking, "What are three lessons you take from this?"

I counted on my fingers. "Always consider the full picture before predicting outcomes. Don't focus so much on disappointments that you miss what comes next." I hesitated, and he tapped my nose with a grin. "How about 'Plan your escape carefully.' Or 'Sometimes danger compounds faster than our ability to outrun it.'"

Nearly two decades ago, this author had a single idea (an event rare enough to document) regarding spell convergence. Upon proposing it, the response from senior practitioners was swift and unanimous: "That's dangerous." Well, of course it is. "Danger" is a subjective term, typically defined by volume of screaming or size of resulting crater. Yet, many magical breakthroughs have emerged precisely from this grey area of reckless optimism.

Should we be deterred by the risk of annihilation? Possibly. But should we be paralyzed by it? Certainly not. What happens when a group of mages casts Aegis of Granite in perfect synchrony? Do they stack into a harmonious Shield Sandwich, an impenetrable dome of magical overcompensation? Do they rebound, fossilizing local squirrels in recursive granite loops? Or, gods forbid, does the spell simply work as intended? Progress requires risk. Art demands spectacle. And sometimes, research means triggering mild earthquakes on purpose. Cast dangerously.

In the future, perhaps chefs and stylists alike will collaborate on seasonal pairings, where saffron-laced cloaks will debut alongside golden honey-stewed partridge, fit for procession and plate alike.

As the spring air carries the scent of new blossoms, we find ourselves in a familiar, yet persistently unsettling, season in the wider world. The whispers and echoes surrounding the Heralds continue to drift on the wind, a constant, low hum beneath the surface of our daily lives. While the initial shock and confusion have perhaps settled into a weary acceptance, concrete answers remain stubbornly out of reach. Despite the lingering uncertainty, Berries & Ink is here to help you make sense of the world, both mundane and (wild-) magical.

In this issue, we are thrilled to welcome two new contributors, Rekletuzrit and Zehira, whose works reflect the struggles and ambitions that define our time. Rekletuzrit's poem is a raw and relentless meditation on perseverance that can be read in more ways than one. Meanwhile, Zehira offers an intriguing perspective on the powers at play within the conflict that looms over us all.

As the days lengthen and the world around us continues its unpredictable dance, we hope this issue of Berries & Ink offers a moment of reflection, connection, and perhaps even a spark of understanding. Like all good children, Mimi was obedient and quiet, and if you believe that I've got some snake oil to sell you. No, Mimi was wild and rambunctious, always escaping her chores to tumble through the meadows and sneak tarts from windowsills. While Olvi are certainly known to enjoy life, Mimi seemed intent on pushing its limits. She still loved her family, of course! But as soon as she could, she left her small village in search of adventure, and it was from here she found the brightly colored silks of the circus tent. It smelled both sweet and savory, the raucous noise from within like a siren song for little Mimi. Without a second glance back, our little adventuring acrobat pushed her way inside.

Menacing in its own right, hushed tones murmur stories of prolonged wear fueling bitter rage lurking in the heart. Even so, these rumors have not hindered its inclusion in the fine jewelry available at recent Hollow's Eve festivals.

This is kefir--a Gods-given gift for the Rakash people. We nurtured and fed the kefir "grains," growing them over generations. We shared our family kefir grains with our pack and friends, and it grew as we did, until no house was without. Add 2 spoons of kefir grains to 2 cups of milk, cover and leave in a warm, dark place for a full day before drinking.

After training, Lavacano slipped away from the guild, curiosity pulling him toward the temple. Inside, he moved quietly past the altars, eyes scanning the statues, uncertain where he belonged. Soft prayers echoed through the stone halls.

Near a column, two clerics whispered. "Zynell's the one to ask," one said. "That Cleric has knowledge on all the Immortals."

The name stuck. Maybe Zynell could help him understand. With one last glance at the flickering altars, Lavacano stepped back into the streets, ready to seek her out.

Nestled within Bosque Deriel, the Grove of the White Laurel is home to a towering camphor laurel with sprawling branches and a dense canopy. This ancient tree shelters a hidden world teeming with life, from fragrant white blossoms to trumpet-shaped red flowers basking in rare sunlight. Treehopper toads call this place home, their constant croaking echoing through the branches. Adventurers can climb its gnarled limbs, navigate thick boughs, and discover secluded perches high above the forest floor. With winding vines and hidden nooks, the Grove invites explorers to lose themselves in its depths -- just be mindful of the eyes that seem to watch from the bark.

I had a dream of rats gnawing at each other in the dark, fighting over scraps I'd thrown them. Their teeth flashed in the dim light as they piled on top of one another in a frenzied swarm until the weak were crushed beneath the weight of the desperate.

I watched with an entertained smile.

Then, a sharp chill cut through the room. The chaos suddenly stopped. The rats stood completely still. My curiosity quickly fell into suffocating terror as an icy prickle ran up the back of my neck and my breath turned bitter. After a moment of unnerving stillness, all eyes snapped in unison to a single target: me. The air thickened with the weight of their intentions.

I have been uneasy all morning.

Once, she was highly motivated, and now that motivation has returned. In her dimly lit lavish parlor, she opened a worn leather book filled with notes and memories. A brief smile crossed her face, but it quickly turned to determination. She remembered the day their fates first crossed. "There must be something in here about the Immortals," she said, dismissing any thought of helping these people. But with war approaching, both sides would become weak, and she was ready to take advantage of that.

She had mastered the art of deception, easily tricking those around her. That, though, was a story for another day. As she read about the Gods, she thought, "How interesting. They are not so different from Them." Those she helped would just be pawns in her game. Standing, she adjusted her crown into place. Wrinkling her nose, she walked toward the door. "It's time to act..human."

Whether it's a cherished ritual, a soothing cup of tea, or the delightful escape of Berries & Ink, taking a moment for yourself is essential. Our hearts ache for our missing friends, including our own Dantia. Thankfully her consistent early submissions allows us to continue enjoying her words as we navigate these uncertain times. Golden hues infused with flecks of metal shimmer around the figure of a Human male of a mature age. While you are preparing your defensive kit, be sure to think about how you want to use that shield. You do have a shield, right? I sleep with mine right next to the bedroll so it's just second nature to strap that shield onto my arm first thing in the morning. If you are in the habit of slinging your shield over your shoulder beside that rucksack, you might want to toggle your mindset. You'd look awfully silly if you died with a perfectly good shield at hand just because it was busy protecting your shoulder instead of your face.

Perched above the verdant landscape of Surlaenis Island, a path through Aesry ends at a flight of basalt stairs. There, carved into the cliffside vantage overlooking the island's northern crescents, stands an ancient, gnarled oak adorned with a stunning array of colored ribbons. This revered tree is known as the Marriage Tree, or Bonding Tree, and serves as a living tapestry woven from the vows of countless couples through the ages. Tradition holds that on engagement, lovers each tie a solitary ribbon to the oak's branches as a symbol of devotion. Then, on their wedding day, the two ribbons are intertwined, symbolizing their union. The Marriage Tree bears silent witness to the joys and sorrows entwined in its eternal braid. So, this magic, huh? Been a little wild. I swear, I tried to cast one spell and it came out as two others! But it got me thinking about magic a lot more. Maybe not in the way all you scholars are, but in a...well, do you remember when we didn't even have magic? Our younger selves, that is. Before we were what we are. I never dreamed I'd be able to weave words into magic, couldn't have imagined songs vanquishing my foes or helping to heal a friend! I think we sometimes lose the *magic* of our magic. Even if your magic is unconventional! We are all full of just really amazing stuff. So no matter how wild this all gets, remember not to take your abilities for granted!

Therengia's Blood Ball left attendees' pulses racing from combat and style prowess! Hostess and Court Bard Ruea was striking in a decadent silver battle gown, dripping in molten-core diamonds.

Tavern Troupe's Elemental Elegance Ball next took center stage, highlighting entrants' sartorial talents with a variety of looks perfectly capturing the traditional six elements and more. Shaylynne's delightful earthen toga set, Illiya's entertaining Gauthus impersonation, and Hamuk's electrifying lightning ensemble dazzled us all!

Which reminds me, somebody once told me the best way to know the future is to build it, but that seems like an awful lot of work when you can just ask a Moon Mage.

[~* The Adventures of Lavacano Gator, Ch. 6: Rebuffed at the Gate by Crobin Yuanfen *~]

With Sekmeht's riste at his side and newfound determination, Lavacano Gator set his sights on the bustling town of Crossing. As he approached the town's gates, he was met with disdainful glares and hostile murmurs.

"Halt, goblin!" a guard barked, blocking his path. "We don't allow your kind in Crossing. Be gone!"

Despite Lavacano's peaceful intentions, a small scuffle ensued. Bruised and bloodied, he fled, bitterness clouding his mind.

As he stumbled through the outskirts of Crossing, Lavacano's strength waned. Just when hope seemed lost, a soft voice called out, "Are you alright?" A compassionate Empath named Illiya approached, her eyes filled with concern.

With gentle hands, Illiya healed Lavacano's wounds. "Don't give up on your dreams," she whispered. "The path to greatness is never easy, but you have the heart of a true adventurer. Keep going."

Heartened by Illiya's words and her healing touch, Lavacano thanked her. With renewed determination, he set his sights on the horizon, ready to continue his journey and prove that even a goblin could achieve greatness.

[~* An Elven Epicurean Event by Valynn *~]

West of Crossing a lone ironwood stands watch over a satinwood grove, holding an interesting collection of food and drinks among its branches.

The cart offers a few standard quaffs, but I opted for a flagon of Prydaen bloodwine. While raising the cup to my lips, I heard clicking noises coming from the nearby sideboard. A salt crab popped out of an aquarium waving and snapping its claws as if in warning. I ignored the creature and took a sip. The crab knew--the taste of congealed blood assaulted my taste buds. I glared at the crab and stifled a gag reflex.

I reluctantly scooped a wine-soaked rat out of the tureen only to have it slip from my fingers and dash for safety. I secretly wished the rodent godspeed and admitted even wine sauce could not have made it palatable.

Live salt crabs: I appreciate freshness as much as the next person, but when that crab waggled its pincers at me (and surprise!) I dropped it, it bolted from the space, headed back to Riverhaven and the beach.

Next raw bear and raw troll--yes, troll. The mere thought had me recalling the virtues of cooking. I confess by this point my Elven constitution was wavering and the live mice making a valiant escape across the table evoked a mix of sympathy and horror. If you wish to push the boundaries of what constitutes a meal (and your stomach's fortitude), this may be the place for you. As for me, I will stick with salads and ginger tea.
