__NOTOC__

==Description==
Oozing about as a gelatinous slime that could fill a small pool, a telga orek writhes and seethes with necromantic corruption. Its body quivers a bit as it moves about in search of prey, and hundreds of eyes blink out from numerous tendrils that grow and shrink randomly from its jelly-like body.

==Recall==
Long said to be a dark perversion of necromantic magic, the Telga Orek is little more than an undead slime that slowly gathers a collection of eyes stolen from its victims.

Favoring forests and underground caverns where little light penetrates, telga orek are masters at hiding, and will lie in wait to ambush their prey.

These creatures have an unyielding obsession with gaining more eyes, and the age of a telga orek can be determined by how many eyes it has. When struck down, a telga orek's body disappears, but its eyes roll away and can regenerate the creature after a time.

They are not known to cast any recognized spells.
They are not known to carry loot in locked boxes.
Approximate order of difficulty: dingy, gloomy, murky, cinereous... atramentous, night dark

Started appearing after the [[Chrysalis]] opened and the [[Akul'tiz]] emerged. Was part of the Akul'tiz invasions. Located now in Li Surmi Gelv, entered through the Wicked Borrow Mine. Comes in various kinds: fuligin (CR: 170), void-black (CR: 185), dingy, dusky, atramentous, et cetera.

==Description==

The atramentous moth is a dark thing cloaked in flickering, baleful shadow, vaguely insectile in form. Its flesh seems nearly as mercurial as smoke, constantly evolving through irregular, chaotic shapes. The creature's bulbous compound eyes are utterly matte and unreflective, each crowned by an antenna which bears an uncanny resemblance to the soft, questing arm of an infant Human, complete with tiny growths resembling inquisitive, chubby fingers. A slick proboscis protrudes from the moth's mouth, dangling obscenely against its thorax. Most striking are the creature's massive wings, spreading fractally above and around its body like drops of dark ink shifting through water.

==Recall==

Said to have been created by the goddess Dergati, these creatures are made from an amalgamation of mundane flesh and shadow stuff. The umbral moth is strongest at night or in overcast weather, flinching from the light of the sun.

The moths feed by grappling with their prey, this proximity usually inspiring terror in the potential victim. Whether this is merely due to the moth's awful visage or some insidious poison or exudation is not known. The strong of mind can resist this attack, depriving the creature of the fear it needs to repair itself and grow stronger. Whether or not the moth feeds successfully, its savage 'kiss' tends to leave its victims tongueless and bleeding.

==Messaging==
A gloomy umbral moth glides in, shadows seeming to warp as it passes.

A gloomy umbral moth glides south in a whorl of shifting shadow.

Stunned: A dingy umbral moth staggers about drunkenly, its massive wings losing coherence.

Standing: A dingy umbral moth's wings beat soundlessly, returning it gracefully to an upright position.

Death: A dingy umbral moth's wings spasm one last time, drifting away from its body like a cloud of acrid smoke. The creature goes still, now nothing more than an ungainly mound of disintegrating shadow.

Now dead, the dingy moth resembles an ungainly mound of rapidly-dissipating shadow.

A dingy umbral moth crumbles into dust, quickly scattered by an errant breeze.

Spawning: A nearby shadow darkens and expands, coalescing into a gloomy umbral moth. Disorienting gusts of feeling roil through the area, accompanying the uncanny beast.

A painful lump rises in your throat as some nearby shadows darken and shift.

==Special Attacks==
Known to have an attack that poisons.<br />

===Vicious Kiss===
: A dingy umbral moth is abruptly before you, as though disdaining the intervening space. Undulating tendrils of darkness strike at you as the creature seeks to enfold you in an inky embrace.<br>
''Fail''<br>
You just manage to escape the questing, shadowy tendrils, though proximity to the creature's uncanny wings leaves you with the beginnings of a headache.<br>
''Success''<br>
Though you struggle to escape, the moth easily ensnares you, drawing you close in perverse mockery of affection. A shadowy, hand-like appendage grasps your head almost tenderly and you feel the moth's slick proboscis plunge past your lips in a vicious kiss. You gag as the coppery taste of your own blood fills your mouth, your tongue savaged in the creature's brutal quest for sustenance.<br>
<br>
Terror blossoms within you, multiplying into vastness. The feeling grows and grows until there is nothing else. Just when you are certain your heart will burst in your chest your fear is simply...taken from you, leaving you feeling hollow and shaken.<br>
<br>
The moth discards you as a child would an empty sweet wrapper, looking bigger and more malevolent.
The Xala'shar archimage shuffles about limply, its chest heaving with great difficulty as it struggles to draw breath underneath the robust fabric of the cloak. Its large, emaciated hands are bound tightly in several layers of filthy bandages, elongated fingers straining to grasp its staff. Carefully secured to the surface of its robes, a shimmering armor of polished chains surround its withered fame in a web of rattling gold, each link painstakingly engraved with a fluid scrawl. The deep hood of its robe has been pulled low across the face, concealing it from view, a never-ending stream of muttered babble issuing from within its black depths. Countless bloody skulls impaled upon golden hook and chains have been suspended from a black gold mantel set low across the Xala'shar archimage's shoulders, its surface adorned with shards of dark bone surrounded in a jagged scrawl.
==Description==
Deadly foes to be witnessed in battle, the archers of the Xala’Shar are renowned for their deadly accuracy despite the obvious lack of sight. A band of black cloth savagely digs into the muscles of its face, its frayed edges partially overgrown by festering mounds of scar tissue. Mismatched patches of quivering scales have been grafted to its heavily tattooed skin, giving it the appearance of a half-breed S’Kra Mur. Six blue-veined tentacles with broad diamond-shaped heads protrude from a muscular bulge on its back, their smooth glistening surfaces covered in a thick layer of clear viscous slime.

==In Depth==
===Equipment===
It is wearing some {{cloot|a|dark double chain mail reinforced with jagged shards of black bone}}, a {{cloot|i|tattered black blindfold}}, a leather cuirbouilli coat, a tattered black blindfold, some dark double chain mail reinforced with jagged shards of black bone.

==Special Attack==
A hulking Xala'shar archer draws a hand through its tangled mane of hair and softly says, "Let us even the odds, shall we?"<br>
With cunning movements, several of the blue-veined tentacles lash violently outward at you with a quivering hiss of delight!<br>
Moving a moment to late, you are unable to avoid the barrage of wildly flailing tentacles. Their diamond-shaped heads slam viciously into your hands, arms, and torso with frenzied blows. <br>

===After kill===
A Xala'shar archer inclines its head as it draws a scarred hand across the band of cloth covering its eyes with a sigh and softly says, "Another organ donor."<br /><br />
With snake-like movements the Xala'shar archer's tentacles coil tightly around your limbs and tenderly raise your corpse from the ground with a quivering hiss. With a brutal pull, the Xala'shar archer's tentacles tear your arms and legs from your body in shower of bone and blood, before tossing your battered corpse aside with ease.
==Description==
The Xala'shar vanquisher is an unusual combination of metal and man, hopping about with surprising agility. Bone-like steel bars have been fused to its skin along the length of its arms, legs and spine to create an odd type of armor plating. Its metallic surface is scribed with a fluid but cryptic scrawl. Half of the vanquisher's face has been melted away, the rancid flesh peeling back to reveal the skull beneath. His single eye gives no hint of humanity about him, the last shreds of sanity melted away with his face.

==In Depth==
===Equipment===
It is wearing some {{cloot|a|decrepit leather armor heavily patched with rusted steel wire}}, a leather cuirbouilli coat, some decrepit leather armor heavily patched with rusted steel wire.<br />
It is carrying a {{cloot|w|serrated-edged scimitar with a black bone hilt}}, a war club, a serrated-edged scimitar with a black bone hilt.
===Special Attacks===
A Xala'shar vanquisher slams the dark steel plates attached along the length of its arms together before quickly drawing them against each other with a metallic screech, sending a shower of burning blue sparks hurtling towards <i><player></i>'s face!<br />
The shower of burning blue sparks tears into ''<player>'''s face! they desperately claws at their eyes, grimacing in agony.<br />
(This move destroys both interal eyes, blinding the target so that all they see is "A Dark Place" exits: none, wherever they go. This condition can be healed by an empath.)
__NOTOC__

==Description==
Thick, articulated hide plating covers the desert armadillo from its dripping, twitchy snout to its barbed tail. Perfectly adapted to blend into a desert environment, the animal's coloration is a mottled patchwork of sand and tan. With powerful claws for digging protective burrows, a barbed tail, and flexible plating that allows the creature to roll itself up tightly, the armadillo appears well built to defend itself.
==In Depth==
===Special Attacks===
Webbing: An elder desert armadillo rears up and spews forth a blast of stringy white webbing at you!

===Combat Notes===
*Standard Attacks: Armadillos use their claws to swipe, swing, slash, and lash at opponents.
*Armadillo Shields: Armadillos use their scale plating as an extraordinarily effective shield. Players should use attacks that bypass shield, such as the [[Lightning Bolt]] spell, or use blunt weapons to attack.
===Inventory/Loot===
It is wearing nothing!<br>
===Area Information===
The Dunes of Despair is a vast maze, but it is stable, so if you can read the twisted map you might be able to escape. The Dunes of Despair used to be inhabited by westanuryn and mihmen, but they have been replaced by armadillos.

===Miscellaneous===
Armadillos were introduced into DragonRealms in early 2007. They first appeared as part of an invasion on the [[Northern Trade Route]] along side [[War Mammoth (creature)|War Mammoth]]s and other upper level creatures. In some respects, such as ranged-defense due to their shields, they are the hardest non-invasion creature in the game. In most other respects the newer Dragon Priest Intercessors are the hardest non-invasion creature in the game.

DR 3.0
* Defenses used to hard cap at 1385 with 4 elders on you. Since then, defensive learning has been changed to allow you to extend this, albeit at a very slow learning rate.
* Requires roughly 775 skinning to be able to succeed about 25% of the time without arranging
* TM caps at about 1650, but slows dramatically before this.
* MO hard caps at 745 with 4 elders on you.

DR 3.1
* Soft caps on defense at 1070.
==Description==
The Xala'shar thrall has willingly chosen to embark upon its dark path, one day hoping to rise in glory within the ranks of the Xala'Shar. Adorned with a set of black robes two sizes too large, its eyes speak of the raw potential ready to be molded into a fierce killing machine. A pulsing black slime, surrounded in an oozing mass of necrotic skin, covers the side of its face. Partially visible along its lower arm, several small runestones have been sewn into its flesh, dully shimmering with a faint green light. <br / ><br / >
Many boxes "at level" with 893 locksmithing.

At least half of the boxes are showing at level or slightly harder with as little as 520 locksmithing. Boxes can be reliably opened with around 550ish locksmithing skill.

Agility, perception, and skill set placement probably have something to do with the large disparity in skill ranges with these particular boxes.

LUCKYSEVENS:

{{UpdateDR3}}
{{RTOC}}

'''Outdoorsmanship''' is a new skill in [[DR 3.0]] that replaces and combines [[Foraging skill|Foraging]] and [[Animal Lore skill|Animal Lore]].

Outdoorsmanship is a {{catskill|survival}} skill used to find items in the natural world, interact with animals, and any number of other pursuits. Foraging and Mining are both heavily reliant on the Outdoorsmanship skill, and there is speculation that material gathering for other crafts will be as well.

=Training=
Outdoorsmanship can be trained by the following activities:
*{{Com|FORAGE}} or {{com|Collect}} items.
*[[Mining]] for rock or metal.
*Feeding, signaling, and releasing Ranger companions.
*Instructing horses/caravans.
*Tending parasites (bloodworms, leeches, etc.)
*[[Fishing]].

===Foraging Strategy===
:''For more information, see [[Foraging]].''
One of the best strategies for training Ourdoorsmanship is to use the {{com|collect}} command. Difficulty of the item being foraged doesn't matter much as the easier item you collect, the more you will get, which grants more experience. Many players simply use {{tt|COLLECT ROCK}}.

[[Healing herbs]] are the best-known of the foraged items, but one can also forage to find wax for [[candlemaking]], limbs and sticks for [[fletching]], firewood, tea leaves, coffee beans, [[alchemy|alchemical catalysts]], grass and vines for [[braiding]], branches for [[carving]], or even items that can be used as improvised weapons, such as rocks and logs.

The general rule in training any skill is that the amount of experience you gain per action is a function of how successful that action was. So when foraging you want to go after the most difficult item you can reliably find. A good place to start is the [[Foraging Compendium]], which can be used by referencing your Outdoorsmanship and {{skill|Perception}} and finding where on the chart you are likely to learn.

It is easier to forage during the daytime as opposed to night. It is also easier to forage in good weather. Heavy rain greatly penalizes your chances of finding something.

===Mining Strategy===
:''For more information, see [[Mining]].''
The release of Mining has proven to be another extremely effective way to train Outdoorsmanship, while also supplying materials for {{skill|Forging|Forging}} and [[Carving]]. Using a [[pickaxe]] or a [[shovel]], a player can mine special areas for various types of metal and stone. The different types of materials do not affect the total experience gained, but the rewarded experience is quite substantial.

Quantity and quality of any material mined is heavily reliant on Outdoorsmanship, meaning the higher your skill, the higher your success. Keep in mind that material gathering difficulties scale, so you may notice that you get far less of one material yet more of another with the exact same skill. This does not impact the experience awarded as failure to find material still grants the same experience. Different materials that can be mined can be found [[Crafting Materials|here]].

===Fishing Strategy===
:''For more information, see [[Fishing]].''
Fishing can be an effective means of training Outdoorsmanship, provided you are using it to train, and not to be the most effective fisherman. A general rule of thumb is that you should recast your line after 5-10 seconds if you've receive no bites. This will optimize your training efficiency. Using worms and basic poles from the fishing shops is just as effective for fishing as any other combination of baits/lines/hooks, so customizing your fishing gear isn't necessary to train well. You can also use the free poles and bait provided on public ships and at some docks (e.g. Landfall Dock in the Crossing) to keep the costs down.

=Skill Aids=
Things that help boost Outdoorsmanship skill:
*Ranger's raccoon
*[[Wolf Scent]] Spell
*Any [[Perception]] boosting ability/spell
*Any [[Intelligence]] or [[Wisdom]] boosting ability/spell
*The [[Tenebrous Sense]] spell reduces the night-time penalty to foraging

{{UpdateDR3|Content should be merged into [[Athletics skill]]}}
{{Obsolete|Climbing is no longer its own skill. It is now controlled by [[Athletics skill]]}}
{{RTOC}}
The '''Climbing skill''' is both used and learned by climbing obstacles. A wide variety of such obstacles exist, from the easiest stairs, steps, and ramps to the hardest sheer cliff walls and barricades.

Under [[DR 3.0]], Climbing and [[Swimming skill|Swimming]] will be combined into the new {{skill|Athletics}}.

==Uses/Learning==
*Not every example of simple obstacles such as steps or stairs may be climbed. If it can't be climbed, just {{tt|GO}} as you would through a door or gate.
*Learning for climbing is on a 60 second (1 minute) timer. Which means you can only learn from one climb of any particular obstacle once every 60 seconds. If an obstacle is climbable from two directions, each direction is considered a separate obstacle that can be learned from. The timer was tested by Zihnj using a favor orb. An obstacle was climbed, exp was granted, and a stop watch was started. A favor orb was rubbed until climbing was clear. Zihnj then climbed back and forth until climbing got exp again. The timer was confirmed on 3 different climbing spots.
*Failing to climb an obstacle teaches just as well or better than successfully climbing an obstacle, so an ideal training strategy is to ''attempt'' to climb many obstacles in a 60 second time, then repeat the loop if not mindlocked.
*Holding a weapon in one or both hands while climbing increases the amount of experience gained from the climb. (This was true under climbing 2.0, but has not been confirmed for climbing 3.0)
*You may now also use CLIMB PRACTICE <obstacle> and STOP CLIMB to practice climbing on reasonably challenging obstacles. Note that practicing will not actually move you, nor will it invoke the experience timers. You would need at least 8 climbs (4 going both ways assuming both ways are roughly equal) in an area that teach you for a climbing script to be as efficient as practice.<ref>[[Post:PRACTICE: Forage? - 1/3/2009 - 11:48:48]]</ref>
*You now have the option to CLIMB <obstacle> WITH <tool>. If you have an appropriate tool (currently the coiled ropes like those sold at the Crossing General Store are the only ones supported) you will gain a bonus to your climb attempt. However, this comes at the cost of a reduction in experience gained.

==Things that Hinder Climbing==
*The biggest hindrance to climbing is injuries. Climbs more difficult than stairs/steps will now also check all limb wounds, not just legs like before.
* [[Encumbrance]] hinders climbing
*Fatigue hinders climbing. The more difficult the climb, the greater the fatigue cost. The better your success (where applicable) the lower the cost.
*You may now attempt climbs with items in your hands (any type), but there will be a penalty involved based on the size of the item, and an additional penalty if both hands are filled. Note: climbing tools (see above) are exempt and will not incur a penalty in and of themselves, although the penalty for having both hands filled will be applied if you have something in the other hand as well.

==Abilities and Spells that Boost Climbing==
*Appraising an obstacle before attempting the climb helps based on your success at appraising. Note that appraisal difficulties are currently inaccurate, but will still help with the climbing attempt.
*Being led by a superior climber increases climbing ability. Being led by a superior climbing ''Ranger'' increases it even more.
*Ranger [[Athletics]] spell
*Ranger wilderness bonus
*Warrior Mage [[Sure Footing]] spell
*Thief - Thief confidence and Urban bonus both include Climbing, per GM-Risek, post #7425 in The Den, A place to talk, squeal, "You can definitely boost your escaping skill with khri. You can boost it by a great deal. You don't have a specific ability to boost you climbing, but it is covered under your Urban Bonus and in Confidence."
*The role of stats in climbing has been increased. Both agility and strength will aid in climbing, so any other ability that boosts agility and/or strength helps as well.

{{UpdateDR3|Content should be merged into [[Athletics skill]]}}
{{Obsolete|Climbing is no longer its own skill. It is now controlled by [[Athletics skill]]}}
{{RTOC}}

==Uses/Learning==

==Things that Hinder Climbing==
*The biggest hindrance to climbing is injuries. Climbs more difficult than stairs/steps will now also check all limb wounds, not just legs like before.
* [[Encumbrance]] hinders climbing

*Bard [[Drums of the Snake]]
*Thief - Thief confidence and Urban bonus both include Climbing, per GM-Risek, post #7425 in The Den, A place to talk, squeal, "You can definitely boost your escaping skill with khri. You can boost it by a great deal. You don't have a specific ability to boost you climbing, but it is covered under your Urban Bonus and in Confidence."
*The role of stats in climbing has been increased. Both agility and strength will aid in climbing, so any other ability that boosts agility and/or strength helps as well.

Yeah, it was the difference between this:
<pre></noinclude>
<includeonly></pre>
and this:
<pre></noinclude><includeonly></pre>
in the code for ClimbItem and ClimbTable. At first I thought it was a bug, but after thinking about it, it makes perfect sense. Anything '''not''' enclosed in <nowiki><noinclude> tags will be part of the code, so that line break after </noinclude></nowiki> was part of the template. Wikicode can be damned maddening at times :P --[[User:Farman|Farman]] 22:55, 4 November 2007 (CST)
:ClimbItem and ClimbTable templates have been combined into the {{tlink|ListHeader}} and {{tlink|ListItem}} templates. These work identically to the old climbing/swimming templates, except that they also work equally well for Swimming and Escaping (once we set up a list for that skill, that is.) Also got rid of that annoying newline bug once and for all, which was caused by the noinclude/includeonly tags between the two templates.--[[User:Symphaena|Symphaena]] 22:45, 19 April 2008 (CDT)
== New system ==

Any idea yet how the Top Cap values apply to the new Practice system? The boulder in Haven west wilds (assuming the one near the gap to the tunnels) is apparently too simple for me to practice on, and I've only 66 ranks. Though climb and move on still nets me some decent learning on the steps, ladders, and mound inside Haven. [[User:FuIru|FuIru]] 21:48, 29 October 2008 (CDT)

== Map Links ==

Added a few links to Ranik's Maps. Originally I was going to match the map links to the location column as was already in place in the Ratha section, but then I noticed the Swimming skill article had the links on the far left column. In the interests of aesthetics and internal consistency, I decided to mimic that article's layout. Not sure of some of the locations and which map to use, walls/embrasures/crenellations in particular. Also I know little about the Qi and Forfedhdar so I'm not inclined to hunt for the map links on those climbables (many of which seem to missing from the list in this article anyway). == {{com|climb|{{tt|climb practice}}}} for climb difficulty listing on the main Climbing Page ==

I tend to use climb practice for training, and have done so almost exclusively since it's release. One thing that I think would be nice would be columns showing the information on the same areas to climb. I don't want to mess with the formatting here to start one, since it would literally double the data columns. Anyways, would be nice for a central listing for items based on the range of ranks that are trainable using climb practice on each object. --[[User:Aristrondr|Aristrondr]] 03:30, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
<br /><br />I just started a table in my user space [[User:Aristrondr]]. All I'm doing is looking for data on climb practice. Since it's a ternary switch (too trivial - no train!, too hard - no train!, woo - train!), progression is a bit harder to just sort of find, so I started a table there that uses the same format here. Bottom cap is the lowest skill it will let you start training, Top Cap is the highest skill before it stops letting you climb practice on it. Haven't read/tried anything with weapons yet, but that's there too.--[[User:Aristrondr|Aristrondr]] 16:06, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
== Climbing with weapons ==

I just found a post from Dartenian, from 2008 that states that climbing with items in your hands does not impact learning. In my testing, I have also found this to be the case. Is there some other source of information that contradicts this? I'm not sure why the table has a separate column for this. Also, I don't know how to link a forum post to epedia? |desc=Among the most esoteric forms of transcendental magic are the dead patterns, which only those who have thrown off life may cast. Spiteful Rebirth is regarded as the most useful of this strange magic, which has the humble goal of defeating death itself.

Through Spiteful Rebirth, a Necromancer can replicate the iconic ability of liches to rise bodily from death with nothing but his own magic. Properly used, it knits together the corpse, then forces its heart to beat, nerves to flare and countless other somatic actions which resuscitate the dead from physical principles. The soul is said to "snap back" upon the restoration of life -- though this process is far from pleasant and leaves the Necromancer crippled for some time. Liches are said to gain some special benefit from this magic, but we do not know what, precisely, that is.

The seeming miraculous nature of this spell makes it the most... philosophically contentious of those we agree to teach. Some Philosophers regard it as spiritual necromancy for its treatment of the soul and steadfastly avoid its demonic taint. Others regard mastery of physical resuscitation as a vital preliminary to understanding the greater Alchemy of Flesh. If nothing else, Spiteful Rebirth is the worst possible thing to bring up in polite conversation.
Your corpse begins to shake violently, sprouting new mass to replace its lost organs. The magic forces its heart to beat, artificially mimicking the rhythms of life. After a few seconds of torturous convulsions, you experience a violent sense of dislocation and pain! You immediately snap from your disembodied state back into your body, gasping for air like a newborn babe.<br />
*With the spell learned, Necromancers may {{com|DEPART}} {{tt|DEATH}} to resuscitate themselves with no memory loss. This temporarily cripples the Necromancer with a potent version of [[Death's Sting]] and brings him back at the very brink of life, but it allows him to remain in full control of his possessions and location. There are limits to how often a living necromancer can DEPART DEATH: there's a hard limit per 24 hour period based on his [[Spirit Health]] and [[Stamina]], and a short-term limit that he cannot use it again while still laboring under the Death's Sting from a previous death.

* There is no RT involved with using this spell, you can DEPART DEATH and immediately leave a dangerous situation.

*This spell is not pre-cast like [[Murrula's Flames]] it is invoked via {{com|depart}} {{tt|death}}.

When raised by this spell, the target has a chance to keep a memorized spell scroll and will retain some field experience. The chance of retaining and amount of field experience is static.

*Using this spell twice, or with [[Call from Beyond]] will result in becoming forsaken, and a death at the hands of the [[Immortals]]. Once a forsaken, you will not suffer a death at the hand of the Immortals other than for [[Divine Outrage]].
Where previous fields focused on affecting the physical senses of those around the Necromancer, Rite of Contrition subverts their supernatural senses.

While the spell is held, the magician can hide any necromantic corruption in his body. The more power fed into the spell, the more corruption can be washed away. This affects attempts to perceive the Necromancer's taint, but does nothing to defend against attempts to exploit it: a Moon Mage can be fooled, Harm Evil cannot.

Finally, the spell matrix is designed to react poorly to the presence of Transcendental Necromancy spells, to aid in the magician's display of contrition. While in use, the Rite of Contrition will dispel any active transcendental mutation.
This corruption is not perfected, and perceptive creatures may notice that they are missing something, or even be able to find the Necromancer him or herself.
