RTOCSect of the Moon Mage guild.

The Progeny of Tezirah is a sect of moon mages focusing on sorcery and creatures of shadow. Their founder, a magess named Tezirah, lived during the time of the Empire of the Seven-Pointed Star and was found guilty of practicing sorcery. She was said to have been executed near the site of the present-day city of the Crossing, but it's believed by many that she escaped into the plane of probability just as she was executed.

Some claim that it is Tezirah who attacks Moon Mages as they tap the Plane of Probability via prediction, appearing in the form of a bat-winged skull.

Historically, the Crowther family has always represented the Progeny of Tezirah on the Council of Moon Mages, beginning with Alicia Crowther, the sixth signatory of the Lunar Accord. The Crowthers are well respected, and few doubt their abilities. Like many Tezirites, the Crowthers are known for their skill and artistry with shadow magic.

A scarlet-robed mage leans forward and speaks to you about this sect. "The Progeny of Tezirah was originally formed by a magess named Tezirah Eilsina. During the times of the Empire, any slightly questionable act of magic was dubbed as 'sorcery,' and shamefully, Tezirah was accused. Officially, she was executed near the present day city of the Crossing, but many believe she managed to cast one final spell of vengeance on her would-be murderers, escaping into the Plane of Probabilty.
"Some distastefully claim that it is Tezirah who attacks Moon Mages as they tap the Plane of Probability via prediction, appearing in the form of a bat-winged skull.
The Crowthers are well respected, and few doubt their abilities. Like many Tezirites, the Crowthers are known for their skill and artistry with shadow magic."

The followers of Fortune's Path came from all across Elanthia and seemed as surprised to meet each other as they were to meet other sects. They were the soothsayers, the fortunetellers and sometimes the tricksters of roving gypsy tribes, as comfortable with a high- stakes dice game as with a cantrip or wand. Even their preferred form of divination, Tokka cards, originated as a gambling game.

Not surprisingly, the arrival of these mages coincided with a num- ber of extremely strange events; one happened right after their temporary spokeswoman stepped outside for some air, and was suddnly besieged by literally hundreds of freelance messengers, all of whom insisted that they had been looking for her for decades.

A colorful gypsy leans forward and speaks to you about this sect. "Gamblers, yes! We've been called that, and it's true. The most prominent of all Fortune's Path members are the wandering Gypsies, so it's only natural that we've gained this reputation."

"Life is too short not to enjoy it, and enjoy it we do. As Moon Mages, we tap into the Webs of Fate and dance with destiny. Some of us just know how to use this to our advantage in a card game or feast, and that can't be all wrong! Trust Fate to deliver to us not what we want, but what we need, and all is right with the world."

"Naturally, our magics reflect our strong interests in gaming, feasting and seizing life by the lapels!" The colorful gypsy adds, "You have but to JOIN us, and be part of this heritage."
Armifer Lore
The Followers of Fortune's Path. The Gypsies. The Fateweavers. The Unbound. They have more names than any two other sects combined and a bizarre non-structure that thwarts attempts to take the group seriously. They are stereotyped as drunkards and hedonists who take more interest in gambling (and cheating) than studying probability strictly requires.

It's part of the point.

While the Web of Fate has entered common vernacular in the Moon Mage Guild, it is a distinctly Fortune's Path concept. Other Moon Mages describe the interplay of forces they deal with as a web or threads of fate without much thought to the symbolism.

The more complex and, strangely, most accessible understanding of the Web of Fate is as a method of describing how multiple objects (possibly all objects) are interconnected. An individual's actions influences those closest to him, and they in turn influence others, and so forth. The removal of a single object or the consequences of one act can ricochet through the universe in dramatic ways through chains of interdependency.

In these terms, prophecy is understood as the ability to see the sympathetic connections between all objects and read what kind of "vibes" are being transmitted through the web. In addition to real acts of prophecy, the Fateweavers value skilled cold readers, people who predict the future with nothing more supernatural than seeing an event take place and fully understanding its significance.

The other usage of the web of fate is more literal and exclusive to Fortune's Path: webs entangle, constrict and thwart the poor bastard that gets caught in them. The Unbound do not take fatalism lying down.

The Followers have a love/hate relationship with the universe, which could be described as fatalism with benefits. The web exists, linking people across the planet as a symbol of, and vehicle for, social cohesion. As they all live on one Elanthia, they will influence each others' lives and be influenced in turn. Fate does not need to be a murderous red-head or rip off Final Destination to have a direct hand in the seer's life. The Unbound are broken into two camps about how best to deal with this realization.

The first camp invests a lot of merit and teleological meaning into the web, seeing it as a largely positive force. The unthinking, impersonal force of fate can constrain the unwary, but it is also responsible for the cohesion of society and the right and proper order of things. To these Followers, the Web of Fate fulfills many of the attributes of a paternal god. They take pride in following Fortune's Path, going where the spirit moves them and exerting what force they feel is necessary to right the web when dangerous vibes start cascading through its links.

The other camp seeks to rise above it all, mastering the web and removing themselves from unsought influences. They regard the web as a danger to their individuality and self-worth. Only when the Fateweaver is untroubled by commitment, untouched by wars, and unhindered by social expectation can he be called his own man and said to make decisions that truly reflect him.

Of course, it doesn't exactly work like that for either camp. It's delusional to believe that the Followers do not have their own designs and an eye on their own comforts, and one of the Unbound is more likely to kill blue than he is to remove himself entirely from his cultural framework. The compromise position that they often reach is to live on the fringes of society, plying their wisdom where they feel it's most needed and staying as unencumbered by commitment as comfortable. Much like the Sophisters' pursuit of perfection, the Followers of Fortune's Path know they're chasing an impossible ideal, hoping they build better lives for themselves in the process.

Of the Prophets of G'nar-Peth, little can be said: the purple- robed mages came from what they called "Master G'nar-Peth's garden of paradise", the same hellish volcanic wasteland known to the rest of Elanthia as the Blasted Plains. Masters of perception and inner vision, it is said that no illusion could fool their minds -- nor their eyes, which were gouged out and the empty sockets hidden behind silken blindfolds.

While surely mad, these walking contradictions were also adepts of fierce power, and "saw" the future in the reflections of their strangely engraved sandstone bowls. While the original Prophets vanished long ago, back into the wastes, some of the bowls remain as their legacy: but, it is written, spending too much time in contemplation of their serpentine hieroglyphs can be dangerous to the mind and soul.
A blind prophet leans forward and speaks to you about this sect. "Sudu li aev sa dinta, li aevan sa ita. - When the eye be empty, the sight be full. This credo we of the G'nar Pethians live by, and it has served us countless generations. What use is mundane sight when we have foresight, gifted to us of the Sightless One? Our other senses are not even used to their fullest.
"There is much more to prediction than to turn a card or roll bones, a deeper meaning that eludes most of our brethren Moon Mages. Things best left unknown, yet all unwittingly have learned them. We all have taken the whispers of secrets into our ears, and only the G'nar Pethian is aware of the implications of these concepts nesting in our mortal minds. Do you have an inkling of comprehension?
"We, the G'nar Pethians, are keepers. Keepers of the lost, the forgotten, the best-left-buried. Ours is not the easy task."
The Prophets of G'nar Peth are a society of perfectly rational archaeologists and historians who follow the mystic philosophy of G'nar Peth on its intellectual and spiritual merits. This is true.

The Prophets of G'nar Peth are imbalanced seers who walk around the wastes of the north, gouging out their eyes to increase the potency of their mad visions. This is also true.

One of the lessons of G'nar Peth is that something may exist in multiple states simultaneously.

All Moon Mages practice mysticism -- using introspection and meditation to attain irrational knowledge of the universe -- but none in such a blatant form as the Prophets of G'nar Peth. The core tenant of the G'nar Pethians is that through prophetic insight and occult lore, a seer can arrive at an understanding of the universe greater than what their imperfect senses can give them. Literally, the eyes of the supplicant cannot compare to the observational power of prophecy and the secret doctrine of G'nar Peth. Someone who follows the path and attains all of G'nar Peth's secrets will find the Garden, which is alternately described as a heavenly realm or a metaphor for transcendent enlightenment.

The Prophets are organized as a mystery religion, somewhat similar to the early 20th century Hermetic orders (or Scientology, for that matter). At the heart of the sect are a set of secret truths about the universe attributed to G'nar Peth himself, which are so profound as to be dangerous to the unprepared. Supplicants must prove themselves by mastering lesser lore, going on vision quests, and otherwise being good G'nar Pethians in a constant effort to learn more of G'nar Peth's wisdom.

Unlike the examples in the real world, the G'nar Pethians no longer have a temple, or much in the way of a sect hall. The lore masters of the G'nar Pethians can be almost as hard to find as the Garden itself. Many G'nar Pethians thus interpret the path as one of self-directed research, that you prove your worthiness to know the secrets of G'nar Peth by finding the secrets of G'nar Peth. These make up some of the most dedicated historians in the Moon Mage Guild and a large fraction of the Moon Mages who do archaeology duty at the ruins of Su Helmas.

The religious aspects of the Prophets are still alive and become a matter of some dissent between G'nar Pethians and their peers. This largely revolves around two points.

1: G'nar Pethians are, to a man, serious about the mystery of G'nar Peth. The G'nar Pethians who have learned some of G'nar Peth's secret doctrine take it to their graves unless they are utterly convinced someone is worthy of it (always another G'nar Pethian). Even the most open-minded and cooperative G'nar Pethian seems to have a transformative moment upon learning one of these occult truths. When asked, the G'nar Pethians repeat the age old answer: some truths are dangerous without greater knowledge, and some secrets are secret for a reason.

2: The whole eye-gouging-insane-seers bit is actually true. G'nar Pethians who devote their lives to the Garden and accumulate libraries worth of secret lore tend to be a bit... weird. They know something you don't (presumably) and react to the world as though through an entirely different system of values. The demeanor of a G'nar Pethian this far into the mysteries can be charitably called ominous, though G'nar Pethians credit it as the sort of fear and discomfort one has before what is divine.

Despite the difference in demeanor, there is no intra-sect conflict. The rank and file Pethians regard the "mad" seers as advanced disciples who practice esoteric rites and deal with strange truths that common men, or even common seers, cannot fully comprehend. The desert-dwelling seers regard the historians and conventional seekers as younger disciples who are going through a rewarding process of discovery. However, both sides have disdain for young G'nar Pethians who take on the trappings of the great seers before they're ready. A common remark among the Prophets is that you should keep your eyes open if you keep running into closed doors.

The Monks of the Crystal Hand said little, letting their deeds carry the message. A band of ascetic warriors from the far west, these meditative souls had honed their mysticism to a razor's edge, able to conceal their movements in cloaks of shadows at will and disarm a foe with a single thought. They pledged themselves to build the Guild as they did all things: with purity, honor, and deadly efficiency, all attuned with the orbits of the moons.

A hooded monk leans forward and speaks to you about this sect. "Constantly on a quest for personal perfection in all ways and all things, the Monks of the Crystal Hand often go without many basic pleasures that most other Elanthians take for granted. Fasts, quests, and long periods of isolation are not uncommon for Moon Mages of this organization."

"Though our studies focus on the arts of magic and war, the Sophisters within these halls discuss and contemplate philosophy moreso than any other point of study. It is through seeking the eternal truths we shall find enlightenment."

Under Braun, the Celestial Compact formed the idea for the Guild and led the unification process. Scholars without peer and keen students of the movement of the heavens, they employ astrology and magic to see the far future as if it were yesterday. It is this author's pride to directly descend from this near-perfect lineage, without whom all would have been lost.

A stuffy junior officer leans forward and speaks to you about this sect. "The Celestial Compact is made up of scholars and astrologers, and has a history dating back to the Empire. The members of the Compact served not only as seers and historians for the Emperors, but also as political advisors, and many leaders of the Compact manipulated their way into the highest reaches of power."

"The Celestial Compact lived on after the collapse by dominating the Moon Mage Guild they had organized, as they almost always maintained a fifty percent majority on the Moon Mage High Council. The Braun family has traditionally led not only the Compact, but the Council itself, serving as a driving force behind the Guild and many of its improvements."

The Celestial Compact excels at light manipulation and light-based illusion." The junior officer adds, "You have but to JOIN us, and be part of this heritage."

Nomads of the Arid Steppe, the Skindancers were potent shamans who employed spirit invocation, myth and trances born of both ecstasy and pain to enter the netherworld and touch the future. They were well-known for developing the use of enchanted bones -- often stripped from the body of a fallen enemy -- to aid in divination.

An ancient shaman leans forward and speaks to you about this sect. "There is an inherent beauty in nature. Beauty is found within the swirling skies above our heads, the earthen land beneath our feet, the running deer and foxes in the woods, the sweeping waves of a wind-swept lake, and the eternity of the stars. It is this truth that we, as Nomads of the Arid Steppe, pass down to our children in our storytelling cessions, so that each generation knows of all the previous ones. In this way, We preserve our cultural identity.

"Our kinship with nature beneath the stars and moons guides us, as we follow the hunting across the steppes and tundra. Our ancestors were the first to rely on fate to tell us how to survive in unity with nature, but there came a warring time, when all the different tribes fought. The spirits send us a leader, and he united us To this day, We follow the creed he established, taking what we need from the land, and not salling up arms unless the reasons are just."
Tribes
The nomad clears his throat and says, "There are many tribes here on the Arid Steppe. Most were united under Kir, long years ago." He pauses to scratch under his furs. "Together, we are known as the Nomads of the Arid Steppe, but it is important to remember each tribe's individuality. The most prominent tribes are the Skindancers, the Windwalkers, the D'Reathor, the Nera, the Khamur, the Chagur, the Trabe, and the Benesu. A few speak of the Bonedancers, but they are renegades."

The fur-clad nomad snorts in contempt before saying, "We honor the Lunar Accord and respect that the Celestians speak the truth: we would likely have been extinguished under the weight of Imperialism without the Guild. We embrace the arcanum of the Moon Mage Guild and teach young shamans in the Guild's ways, but Throne City is very far away. We sit at the base of the Trabe's spire, the divination of the Skindancers plays out the future in every yurt, and even the strange enchantments of the Nera supplement the art of the sigils and stars. Our heritage remains strong, and I will speak more about it if you wish."

Cherulisa says, "The Nomads of the Arid Steppe are one people and one tribe, forged by the peace of Kir Dor'na'torna. Our oral tradition claims that the original tribes formed during the time of Grazhir's fall, though there is little proof of such a claim. As our title suggests, we are the people of the steppe: It is here that we tend our herds, hunt our game, and migrate with the seasons under the light of the moons."

Cherulisa says, "There are some who exalt the individuality of the tribes, but I do not. Just as the Moon Mage Guild threatens to slide back to the days of isolated and threatened sects, I will not let the one people of the Nomads return to the fractured and warlike tribes. That is the way of the false Kir and his Bonedancers."

More information can be found in:
* Profiles in Magic Volume 4: Kir Dor'na'torna

The Nomads are traditionally patrilineal.

* Note: It is possible to further affiliate yourself to a specific tribe (except the Bonedancers) by asking the nomad residing in a yurt on the east side of the Trabe Plateau. However, there does not appear to be any form of game support for this feature. (No titles, no affiliation, no items, and no known acknowledgements.) Some people have claimed to have recieved a tribe-specific title, while not being able to access the generic "Nomad" title. This may be a bug issue.

Benesu
Cherulisa says, "In the old days, the Benesu were the wealthiest of the tribes, and were constantly besieged because of it. They created powerful Perception and telekinetic magic to fend off poachers. The Benesu spear, though it is nothing more than brightly painted wood and iron, is one of our greatest symbols of tribal violence."

The fur-clad nomad softly says, "Benesu is a name connected with the animals of the Arid Steppe. The greatest herds were tended by the Benesu, which led them to unending conflict with the other tribes. In battle they favored their spears, which they painted bright colors. It is said that with the magic of the moons, the Benesu could hurl their spears at poachers on the horizon and strike unerringly at their hearts."

Bonedancers
Cherulisa says, "Not a tribe, not a people. The Bonedancers are madmen who make a mockery of our culture and the peace of Kir. Stay well away from them if you value your sanity and your life."

The fur-clad nomad shivers and says, "Bah. The Bonedancers are terrifying. All tribes can find beauty in nature, but this lot finds it within piles of bleached bones, the marrow sucked dry. Most are S'Kra Mur or Human, and almost all are completely insane. When Katamba and Yavash are full in the sky, they will often hold perverse revelries where they toss powdered bones into a blazing fire, looking for portents from the rising ash. A dangerous group. Stay away."

Chagur
Cherulisa says, "Too much drama and too much blood." She shakes her head and continues, "The Chagur say a great warrior of the Khamur murdered a daughter of the wisest seer among the tribe at the time, driving him to suicide and robbing the Chagur of his wisdom. Whether it is true or not, the crime echoed through the generations in their stories, up to the near annihilation of both tribes at the Plains of Grief. For most Nomads, the old hatred is now a historic curiosity; a warning for what will happen if we abandon the teachings of Kir."

The fur-clad nomad frowns and says, "All the tribes were violent before we became a single people, but the Khamur and Chagur were especially so. In the furthest past they were like brothers, trading freely and fighting side by side. It is said a great betrayal ripped the two tribes apart, though to this day neither tribe will admit they were the betrayer. Their wars were bitter and lasted many long years, staining the eastern reaches of the Arid Steppe red. Their greatest battle cost both tribes two-thirds of their men, mere months before Kir brought his message of peace to the tribes. The Plains of Grief are said to still bear the scars of that battle, its land twisted by the memory of primal and violent magic."

D'Reathor
Cherulisa says, "The peace maker came from them, but they still embrace a harsh stoicism that the Sophisters might enjoy. The image of a warrior Nomad, spear in hand and dire magic on their lips, comes from the D'Reathor. Be it war, in in their vision tents, or in supporting Kir's vision of peace, they are said to have done nothing by half measure."

The fur-clad nomad ponders for a moment before saying, "The D'Reathor were, at one time, the most barbaric of the Nomads on the Steppe. Those days are long gone, but they are still a harsh people. Elaborate facial tattoos are used to mark their status in the tribe, with some so decorated that their skin color is no longer apparent. Another aspect of the D'Reathor involves their vision tents, where they spend many days in a trance to divine the future. This is a dangerous thing, and not everyone who emerges is unscathed from the experience."

Khamur
Cherulisa says, "Too much drama and too much blood." She shakes her head and continues, "The Khamur claim that a bitter and ill-mannered Chagur slew the daughter and only child of their chieftain for rejecting his advances. Whether it is true or not, the crime echoed through the generations in their stories, ending with the near annihilation of both tribes at the Plains of Grief. For most Nomads, the old hatred is now a historic curiosity; a warning for what will happen if we abandon the teachings of Kir."

The fur-clad nomad frowns and says, "All the tribes were violent before we became a single people, but the Khamur and Chagur were especially so. Their greatest battle cost both tribes two-thirds of their men, mere months before Kir brought his message of peace to the tribes. The Plains of Grief are said to still bear the scars of that battle, its land twisted by the memory of primal and violent magic."

Nera
Cherulisa says, "Many years after the tribes had formed, the ragged Nera came to the steppe and adapted to life here. Wherever they came from, they brought the knowledge of Lunar enchanting with them. It was crude by modern standards, but unlike anything the tribes of that day had seen. The Nera traded knowledge and labor for their survival in those harsh days before Kir's peace."

The fur-clad nomad looks down at one of his copper sigils before saying, "The Nera are a strange people. They came from the mountains of the west, though the Windwalkers will not claim them. They name themselves after an ancient leader of their tribe, who they venerate the same way many others speak the name Kir Dor'na'torna. Nera is said to have been a great enchantress, so beloved that the very spirits of the earth grew mad with grief at her passing. They fled their isolated land and commingled with the tribes, bringing the art of the sigils with them."

Skindancers
Cherulisa says, "We are what many of the eastern Moon Mages think of when they say "Nomads." Our lives are often played out beneath the moons, without even a yurt to protect us from the harsh weather of the steppe. We commune with the spirits through our wandering."

Touching the copper sigils on his ivory carving, the fur-clad nomad says, "Skindancers, yes. I am of that tribe. Our travels take us through all the lichen tundras, rocky plains and icy wastes that the Steppe has to offer. Nature is a beautiful thing beneath the moons, but conspires against us oft times. For this reason, we rely heavily on skins, laying them down before throwing bones of foretelling, sleeping upon the warm hides of yaks, dancing upon them during weddings and funerals." The nomad pauses. "The quality of the skins we carry can show at a glance where we stand in the tribe."

Trabe
Cherulisa says, "Had the D'Reathor of the past been a little less violent, there are many things we may have known. I would've liked to have known a Trabe and asked them about the shaping of this crystal spire. But there are no more Trabe, merely children of the D'Reathor who have stolen their name."

The fur-clad nomad peers down at the ground before saying, "The ancient tales say the Trabe, the men of the plateau, "tamed the crystal" and shaped the blue spire which Cherulisa took as her guildhall. Little is known about the tribe, since they rarely left the sight of their blue monstrosity, rarely trading with the others. They suffered great hardships for their isolation and finally fell in a great battle against the D'Reathor. The men of the Trabe were slain and their women were taken." The nomad snorts. "Some of the children of the D'Reathor still claim the heritage of the crystal shapers, but no true Trabe lives."

Windwalkers
Cherulisa says, "They were once an insular tribe, which gave rise to odd rumors about them, such as some silly business with a catapult. Still, when we shared out knowledge after the peace of Kir, they taught us much about what is now called "enlightened geometry" and the use of teleportational energy."

The fur-clad nomad smiles and says, "The Windwalkers are an interesting bunch. Most of the Arid Steppe is flat, but as one heads far to the west, massive mountains rise up. This is the domain of the Windwalkers, moving north and south with the seasons, but never leaving the higher elevations. There they build homes on sheer cliffs, where one false step would lead to certain doom." The nomad gazes toward the west. "Some say they're insane, and that they use great catapults to hurl their tethered warriors into the sky to hunt birds. Rumors abound that they have the ability to teleport into the sky and back down again in an eye blink."
