__NOTOC__

Description
The dark spirit is a mass of swirling shadow given substance. Clothed in little but the rag of a robe, its hands are terribly jagged claws, its eyes a glowing sanguine color. The creature appears to have the mentality of the damned, moving with intention and deadly grace as it floats about.

In Depth
Area
This lowest-tier dark spirit is found in three locations. The Tiger Clan cemetery requires a light source or dark-seeing ability. Ratha beach has the room directions obscured by fog.

Equipment/Loot
It is wearing a a.
It is carrying a s, a w.

Interaction with any of the equipment will cause it to disappear. (E.G. As you reach for the black shadow, it wavers and fades into nothingness.)

Caps
Dark spirits in Tiger clan seem to teach lower than the 180 cap listed. Armor in the 150-170s trickles at 1/34. Weapons at the 120s teach reasonably well. Still miss occasionally even with 190 melee mastery.

At just shy of 150, learning happens slowly and dancing with 3 is extremely easy. They appraise as 'a simple opponent'.

Description
Expanding and contracting, the tortured soul is hard to make out. Basically humanoid in form in shape its body twists and shudders as if in excruciating pain. At times it takes on some solidity and the vague form of a person in torment can be seen. While its body may be nothing but a twisted mass of essence, its teeth and claws look real enough, willing and able to rend your soul from your body!

In Depth
Equipment/Loot
Tortured souls very rarely drop is, which can be used by Paladins to check their soul state. You need to do "LOOT ALL" to get the soulstone. "LOOT" alone doesn't work.
__NOTOC__

Description
Lithe and powerful, the (dark/azure/crimson) merrows is a vaguely humanoid merfolk. Bulging yellow eyes glare threateningly from the merrows' hideous pug-face and needle-like teeth gnash with a constant hunger for warm flesh. The merrows' tail is thick and strong enough to propel it swiftly through the swirling waters of the caverns, leaving its gangly arms free to shred prey with their razor-sharp claws.

In Depth
Comes in three different colors:
* i
* i
* i
While there is no perceivable difference in their skill or abilities, their hides have different properties when it comes to tanning.

Area
Much of the area the merrows inhabit is underwater. Aside from needing an air source, bows and some spells are ineffective.

Hunting Info
Manipulated in order of difficulty (tier 1 to tier 3): Crimson, Azure, Dark

*Thugs train better in this range, the boxes seem slightly worse than swains in contents but are harder to disarm but not open

Levels
There are minor differences between the three types of Merrows:

A crimson merrows:
FOR NATURAL ATTACKS: Estimated Creature Level = 28
FOR WEAPON ATTACKS: Estimated Creature Level = 0
Overall estimated creature level = 24
FOR NATURAL ATTACKS:Estimated Creature Level = 32
FOR WEAPON ATTACKS:Estimated Creature Level = 0
A lesser shadow hound whispers its last raspy yelp as its stark silver eyes wink out of existence amidst its cloak of shadows. Soon the cloak itself rapidly unfurls, leaving nothing but the broken body of a mundane wild marsh hound behind.

The wild marsh hound lies still on the ground, beaten beyond recognition. The proud canine is now but a mere shattered husk of its former glory.

In Depth
Attacks
*Claw: a lesser shadow hound rips its vicious scythe-like shadowy claws at you.
*Bite: a lesser shadow hound leaps in rage, its gleaming silver fangs barred at you.

Special Attacks
Shadowy Cloud: Cloud hangs in room and causes anyone in the area to develop Fleshrot (potentially contagious infection).
: Messaging
:: >A lesser shadow hound growls low barring its vicious fangs, a looming fog of shadows billowing from its twisted maw.
:: >The shadowy cloud churns outward, exuding billowing curtain of sickly black mist that drifts outward toward you...
:: >A thin layer of black mist blankets you, coating your skin with a sticky black grime. A cold sweat breaks upon your forehead as an icy chill races through your veins.
:: >LOOK: You also see a looming shadowy cloud.
:: >The shadowy tendrils churning outward from a looming shadowy cloud fall limp to the ground, dispersing in a final skiff of sickly ebon mist.
:: >HEALTH: Your body is covered in open oozing sores.

The cloud can be rebuffed (potentially only partially) by Protection from Evil
Unknown: A lesser shadow hound tosses its head back and howls a discordant dirge!
: >The shadows making up the lesser shadow hound begin to churn and swirl, making it harder to pinpoint its location accurately.

Area Information
The Zaulfung is an ever-changing low water area where you have to wade through every room. Look for a "curving path" to return to Riverhaven or look for a "sickly tree" to climb further into the swamp.

Notes
(Nov 2020) I believe there is a very wide range of possible spawn levels for this creature, or perhaps some sort of bug. Every tenth shadow hound or so seems to be substantially more difficult than the rest. Two of these at once were usually sufficient to drive me from the area in search of an empath. This persisted clean through until I needed a more difficult are to train in.
Description
The dobek moruryn is a relative to the classic scorpion that has grown to a phenomenal size. Rivaling a ram in mass, the moruryn has been known to kill and eat almost anything it could sink its pincers into. Legend suggests Urrem'tier created them to protect the caverns from any intruders and to prevent them from making it back to the outerworld.
The Cavern of Glass was changed to a non-justice zone on 15 March 2016, however, a Barbarian ROAR CHECK currently returns an erroneous justice zone message. Per DR-Grejuva, corrected messaging is in the works pending certain Roar updates. - 11 February 2021
Special Attacks
Poison stinger attack

Attack appears to be negated by pfe, although character was also a cleric with high devotion. More testing necessary to be certain.

A dobek moruryn lurches forward to stab a pointed stinger at you!
Your silvery-white glow shines brightly like a holy armor.
The dobek moruryn's stinger lashes at you. The stinger lands a light hit that lodges in your chest!
Sparks fly as the stinger collides with your protective holy aura!

Your faith has preserved you from the unholy poison!
Description
The gremlin stands waist-high to a Human, though its perpetually hunched figure indicates it could possibly look one in the eye if it bothered to stand up straight. Black leathery reptilian skin covers its entire body, reflecting little light. Spindly legs would appear to be too thin to support its wide-shouldered frame, but its easy, predatory grace belies any implied clumsiness. A wide, triangular head with large pointed ears sits atop a short narrow neck, and it glares about with squinting yellow eyes.
Area
This lowest-tier dark spirit is found in three locations. The Tiger Clan cemetery is dark and requires a light source or dark-seeing ability. Ratha beach has the room directions obscured by fog.

A truly massive figure, the fiend is draped in shadows. It's very armor appears to be fashioned from the darkness. No details of its appearance can be seen except the malevolent glow of two glaring red eyes staring out from behind its helm. They seem to look deep into your soul seeking out any deed or misvirtue for which it may be due.

I was wondering if it has been confirmed that reducing hinderance to 'none' and/or increasing perception ranks (via spell, etc) enhances success with opening boxes. I've always assumed so. -posted March 21/2018

Been thinking I wanted to undertake a somewhat large scale project on here. Thinking of an overhall of the Locksmithing/Lockpicking/Disarming pages. Any apprehension to me doing this?
Thoughts would be to basically combine the info and tables from the disarm and lockpicking pages, onto locksmithing, as well as add information on the order of commands used to train it, and abilities used to enhance it.
I have combined the Boxes and Box Traps page into this one. If it is up to snuff, those other two could probably be deleted, or redirected here. I don't know how to redirect, and I don't know if I'm allowed to delete. SEGGERING (talk) 13:22, 5 February 2015 (CST)
Special Treasure Boxes?
How common is it to get a box that has extraordinary loot? I've now found 4 or 5 lout/goblin boxes that held anywhere between 1 and 5 platinum in them... way, way out of the norm... but... clearly, it happens. Should we note something about loot here at all?
CARAAMON April 19, 2016

Faulty Analysis of the Box Difficulty Chart
This is the original player of Kaxis.

I was looking over the information on this page about the box ranking I did a number of years ago and found someone has made some serious errors. This discussion is lengthy since I need to fully explain all the issues and not just make changes without foundation.

The Methodology section is generally correct, but the Synopsis is not. The work I did had nothing to do with Locksmithing ranks, so it cannot be compared to any system designed to produce Locksmithing ranks as a result. My system's only purpose was to place the boxes in a particular order, from easiest to hardest. This was all clearly explained in my posts.

The final Note part is a big problem.

The comment about my system being up to 100 ranks off is wrong since my system never computed ranks in the first place. It mistakenly mentions my chart's "skill listings" when my chart doesn't list or deal with skills of any kind in any context. Someone didn't understand my unitless box scores and confused them with Locksmithing ranks.

The information about guild and stat breakdown is also inappropriate since a member of any guild with any stats could have duplicated my research and gotten the same box order. It's the chart below mine that suffers from guild and stat breakdown since time-sensitive variables are unaccounted for. As the tester or other diverse players with varying stats and skills and whatnot gain circles and input their numbers, this would become an issue.

That lower chart also fails to account for the wide range of box difficulty the boxes of the same creature have. Another tricky element is the degree of variance also changes for each creature, meaning some creature's boxes vary more than others. It's a pretty good moving target and makes an approach based on Locksmithing ranks fairly primitive. Such can only be considered a rough guide. This should become increasingly evident with increasingly stronger creatures depending upon where the levels are set.

When testing my boxes, I kept my stats and ranks stationary. All the boxes were tested with the same yardstick and put in an order of difficulty based on how easy or hard Kaxis found them. The only variable was the boxes themselves. Guild bonuses, perks, abilities, Thief tricks, stats, ranks, or whatever, were not involved. None of that applies.

As for the 3.1 comment, I don't remember any GM reworking boxes. Years ago, Kodius said he wanted to look at it, but as far as I know, boxes haven't been redone since Zeyurn was the Systems Lead, and even then I'm pretty sure he only adjusted treasure. I would expect that a box rewrite would also be part of a larger creature rewrite. However, if creatures and boxes have been rewritten unbeknownst to me, then that could change things.

Another problem is partially my fault. The final three creatures listed in this article: Gargantuan Bone Golems, Vaporous Blood Wraiths, and Orc Reivers, were never intended to be the final three on the main list. They were just three lower level creatures I happened to check. In my original post they were in a separate table; in this article they were mistakenly added to the main table. Also, 1st floor Orc Raiders seemed to have been oddly and erroneously dropped from the list.

The worst mistake in this article is that the box chart is actually in the wrong order compared to my original. It looks like someone tried averaging the high/low box scores and then re-ordering the creatures. They made quite a few math errors, but the idea is haywire anyway since it only uses the high/low boxes in each sample and ignores the other 8 boxes. This reduces my 10-box sample down to only 2. We need more data points, not fewer.

At the higher end of creatures, the ranges are wider, so this error isn't as detectable. At the mid-to-lower end it throws my precisely ordered chart into chaos. No wonder accuracy was lost, but it wasn’t the fault of my system. The high/low box scores are insufficient for a finished table, and I only posted them at the request of a player.

There are only two possible sources of error in my work. One was the 10-box sample; I wish it could have been larger, although 10 boxes still gave me 1000 data points per creature. The second was there seemed to be some disagreement afterward about which order of difficulty messages was the correct one. However, these effects are minor. Looking at the list, it pretty much follows the order one would expect. There could easily be a few creatures that are swapped with each other, like Stompers with Cinder Beasts, or Shalswars with Juggernauts, but any such swaps would be mainly between adjacent creatures with nearly identical scores and not wildly out of place as the final Note suggests.

The best approach is to just go up my chart creature-by-creature when considering boxes. This method is simple, and it works. There is often an overlap of creatures (the gap between Dragon Priest Assassins and Misenseor Resuscitants is the biggest exception to this), so there are creatures you can skip if that suits your combat needs better.

I'll correct this article when I can since the current wording can only discourage players from using my chart when in fact it's the best and most reliable piece of information available at the moment.

Locksmithing page type is::skill is used to pick locks and disarm traps, as well as for lockpick carving and lockpick fixing. Locksmithing is most commonly used for opening containers dropped by slain creatures, commonly referred to as boxes.
The DR 3.0 update combined and replaced the now obsolete Lockpicking and Disarming skills with Locksmithing.

Training
All commands associated with lockpicking or disarming will train the Locksmithing skill to some degree. Some of the commands will also train perception, to a much smaller degree. There are multiple variations of both commands that can help increase both the amount of training received and chance of success.

Disarming
Disarm
Identify - Tells you the type of trap, and the difficulty in accordance with your skill. If the last trap on the box has already been disarmed you will incur a small roundtime letting you know what the disarmed trap looks like.

Disarm
<caution> - The act of actually disarming the trap, the level of caution you use is up to you.
:"Careful" - Slowest, but safest caution level
:None - Putting nothing for caution will result in the second slowest, and second safest form of disarming
:"Quick" - 2nd fastest and 2nd most dangerous.
:"Blind" - Fastest and most dangerous.

Disarm
Analyze - Analyzing a box will show you what type of mechanism can be harvested from trap. Each trap can only be harvested if you have not started working on the next trap.

Disarm
Harvest - Harvesting will attempt to retrieve a piece of the trap mechanism.

Lockpicking
Pick
Analyze - Analyzing a lock will tell you what the lock looks like, determining what type of lockpick should be used. If the last lock in the box has been picked you will receive a message saying the box is not locked, but no roundtime.

Pick
Identify - Identifying a lock will tell you the locks difficulty in accordance with your skill.

Pick
<caution> - Caution levels are the same as disarming; "Careful", none, "Quick", "Blind".

Lockpick carving
See Lockpick carving and Fix command articles.

Training Tips and Tricks
A popular trick for training the locksmithing skill is to Disarm(or have disarmed) boxes at, or above your skill level, then try to Pick Blind with armor on and standing. The Pick Blind command has the least chance of success, and the boxes will take awhile to pick. If you're not looking to use boxes as an immediate source of income, this can be a very good training technique.

Types of locks and picks
Certain lockpicks will need to be used on certain types of locks. Analyzing the lock will reveal what type of lock it is. This has only partially been introduced into the game and is waiting on the Lore rewrite to be fully incorporated. Quality and style will be separated out, so it will be possible to have a master quality pick of the following styles. It was mentioned that grandmaster quality would be able to open all styles of locks, but be restricted to the thief guild.

*Although difficult to spot at first, a thin hole along the bottom of the lock appears to be the key receptacle.
:Slim

*The lock's structure is relatively basic, standard in every way without any unusual characteristics.
:Ordinary

*A sturdy block of metal, the hole for the key is very wide. This big lock obviously is meant for a correspondingly large key.
:Stout

*An intricate steel star houses a complex locking mechanism, with two different spots that each look like they're meant to house keys.
:??
Enhancements
Locksmithing is affected by armor hindrance and can be especially affected by armor and brawling gear worn on the hands. If you are being impeded by anything you are wearing you will notice it when you try to Pick or Disarm. Kneeling and/or sitting while popping boxes is also recommended to increase chances of success.
Mid- to High-Level Box Difficulty Chart by Kaxis
Messaging Scale
There are 17 different difficulty level messages that can result when Disarm IDing a box. These were numbered from 1-17 (easiest to hardest).
Variables
There are two notable variables. The first is when disarm IDing a box multiple times, the difficulty messages generated will be similar but not exact. They will cluster as an average around the unknown true difficulty level. The second variable is that some boxes from a creature type are easier or harder than others.
Testing Procedure
To compensate, a 10-box sample was collected from each creature type and then each box disarm IDed 100 times. This generated 1000 data points, with each data point representing a particular difficulty level. These were totaled to give a final numerical score for each creature type. The higher the score, the more difficult the box.
The final scores for each creature type were arranged in descending numerical order to create a box difficulty chart. The chart below was done on mid- to high-level creatures. At the time, Dragon Priest intercessors were the highest creature in DragonRealms.
The tests were run without change of either statistics or skill ranks. Thus, each creature type was tested against the same parameters.
Notes
This method does not deal with Locksmithing ranks. The final scores are unitless and allow boxes to be accurately scaled against each other.
It must be understood that the numbers in the chart were unique to Kaxis at the time. Were he to run the test now with different Locksmithing ranks and statistics, he would get different numbers, but the box order generated would be virtually identical. This would hold true for any character from any guild. The scores in the chart were included only for reference purposes and increased transparency of the testing procedures.
There is an effectiveness overlap between creatures on the chart, so as the player goes up the list, some can be skipped if there are other hunting requirements. The notable exception is the rather significant gap between Misenseor resuscitants and Dragon Priest assassins.
This testing method was chosen because the considerable random number generation in the box system, combined with the wide variety of player stats, ranks, spells, guild abilities, bonuses, disarming techniques/approaches, and other factors makes accuracy in a Locksmithing ranks-based system impractical. Such a system could be useful but only as a rough guide.
Each box can contain multiple traps and multiple locks. Upon each successful disarm or unlock you will see if it is not yet fully disarmed or picked.
Each type of trap has a unique appearance, a harvestable item, and a unique consequence for tripping it.
